Extractions: For many years, researchers and explorers have discussed the possibility of extant dinosaurs in equatorial Africa. In November of 2000 a reconnaissance trip was undertaken to follow up on reports of a creature in the southeast of Cameroon that matched the Mokele-mbembe descriptions historically coming from the Congo. Purported eyewitnesses were interviewed and some interesting details about the mysterious creature were recorded. Sufficiently credible evidence was gathered in the three-week trip to warrant a full-scale expedition scheduled for the spring of 2001. The informants descriptions of this creature appear to be quite similar to the biblical Behemoth. In the late eighteenth century French Catholic missionaries began working with the native African tribes occupying the area that today comprises Gabon, Cameroon, and the Peoples Republic of the Congo. The first written record of the mysterious creature which is called Mokele-mbembe (one who stops the flow of rivers) appears in a book written in 1776 by the French priest Abbé Lievain Bonaventure Proyart describing the natural history of the Congo Basin of Africa. While passing through the forest, he observed tracks of an animal "which was not seen but which must have been monstrous: the marks of the claws were noted on the ground, and these formed a print about three feet in circumference." Extractions: Aka Pygmies of the Western Congo Basin The Aka Pygmies are foragers of the tropical forest regions of the southwestern Central African Republic (CAR) and northern Peoples Republic of the Congo (PRC) (see Figure 1). The Aka in this study are associated with the Bokoka section of Bangandu village (CAR). There are approximately 300 foraging Aka associated with Bokoka, and 769 farmers, primarily Ngandu peoples, in Bokoka. Natural Environment The most distinctive characteristic of the tropical rain forest is its great species richness; no other major ecological community has as many varieties of plants and animals (e.g., it has over 3,000 plant species) (Lewin 1986). Yet, the rain forest is a relatively poor place for foraging humans to live because animals are sparsely scattered and a low percentage of plants are edible (Dunn 1968; Richards 1973). Ecology of the tropical rain forest is characterized by many species of plants and animals per unit area, but by few individuals per species in the same unit area. Ecologists sometimes describe the tropical forest as "marginal" by comparison to temperate environments, but the Aka certainly do not perceive their environment in this way. It is seen as a plentiful environment, rich in game and edible plants. Nutritional studies coincide with Aka perceptions; Aka are better off than most other peoples of sub-Saharan Africa (Pennetti et al. 1986; Cordes and Hewlett 1990). But it is most likely the great accumulation of hunting and gathering knowledge and skill of the Aka that enables them to have a relatively abundant life in the forest.
