La Belgique, officially Kingdom of Belgium, constitutional kingdom (1991 est. pop. 9,950,000), 11,781 sq mi (30,513 sq km), NW Europe. Belgium is bordered on the N by the Netherlands and the North Sea, on the E by Germany and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and on the W and SW by France. Brussels is the capital and largest city; Antwerp is the chief commercial center, one of the world's major ports, and the second largest city. Flemish (a Dutch dialect) is the official language in Flanders, while French is official in the south. The French-speaking people are commonly called Walloons, although the term once referred chiefly to those people in the area of the city of Liège who spoke Walloon, a French dialect. Brussels is bilingual, and German is spoken in a small section of Liège province. About three quarters of the population is Roman Catholic; the balance is almost entirely Protestant. Important cities include Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liège. There are universities in Brussels, Ghent, Liège, Louvain, Mons, and Antwerp. The country also has numerous colleges, and schools of music, architecture, and art. Many cities (most notably Brugge and Ghent) have preserved their medieval architecture and art, which attract thousands of tourists annually. The North Sea coast is popular in the summer.

His research focuses on Pliocene dinoflagellate cysts from the North Atlantic and the southern North Sea Basin. The project aims to provide insights in the Pliocene climate at the southern North Sea Basin and the North Atlantic, the position and intensity of the Gulf Stream and the depositional history of the southern North Sea during the Pliocene. Geology and palynology are Stijn's major interests. He worked with Chitinozoa from the Silurian in the Brabant Massif, but has recently moved up on the geological time scale to study dinoflagellates from the Pliocene. He attended two summer field school campaigns on neotectonics in Central Siberia (Russia) and the Kyrgyz Republic. Stijn studied Geology at Ghent University between 1996-2000. The following year, he was a student at the University of Liege, where he obtained the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Plant Micropalaeontology and Palynology. His dissertation "Pliocene organic phytoplankton from Doel, northern Belgium: Biostratigraphy and Palaeoecology" was based on a dinoflagellate study from the Deurganckdok in Doel.

The Walloon region encompasses Wallonia and the German-speaking areas. Brussels-Capital is the third region. Each region has a directly elected legislative assembly, known as a Council, and an executive. Belgium covers 30 519 square kilometres and lies between the Netherlands to the north, France to the south, and Luxembourg and Germany to the east. Its natural border to the west is the North Sea. Bordering the sea are fertile polder lands, behind which stretches the sandy Flanders plain, with the woodland and heath of the Kempenland. The central plain divides the lowlands in the North from the densely wooded Ardennes and the Belgian part of Lorraine in the South. At 694m above sea level, the Signal de Botrange is the highest point in Belgium. The most important rivers are the Scheldt and the Meuse.

Click on the labeled countries below to get more information. Pilsner —Plzensky Prazdroj, in Plzen, Czech Republic, is the source of Pilsner Urquell (the "original Pilsner"). The brewery has operated since 1842, producing a bottom-fermented pale beer that has become the model for Pilsners the world over. Altbier —"Old beer" brewed in the city of Dusseldorf. Old refers to the style of brewing - using ale yeasts. Altbiers are generally copper in color, dry and medium bodied. A style of beer developed in Bavaria that was originally brewed in the late fall from the first malt and hops of the harvest. It was aged in deep caves throughout the winter and drunk in the spring. It was traditionally sold beginning on the first day of spring, which came to be known as Bock Beer Day. Bock beer season lasts for 6 weeks. Double Bock —A strong beer originally brewed by monks of the order of St. Francis of Paula for Lent, and is still served to celebrate spring. Often identified by the "ator" suffix.
