Extractions: Churchill, in the Canadian province of Manitoba, occupies a spit of land that provides the fastest access onto the ice, and the bears are in no mood for any detours once the waters of Hudson Bay begin to freeze. So they congregate near the town and prowl the landscape for appetizers before the main course becomes accessible. Ewan McGregor puts himself in the middle of the action as town and wildlife authorities skillfully cope with both the would-be marauders of the furry variety, and the throngs of tourists who descend upon the town to see the bears, often at considerable risk to themselves. Along with McGregor, viewers get a close-up look at how polar bears that wander into town are sedated, carted off to polar bear "jail," and eventually hoisted by helicopter onto the frozen bay. It's a dramatic reversal from years ago, when bears invading human space often were shot, sometimes after lethal encounters with people.

Polar bears are among the largest land carnivores. Adult male polar bears, called boars, weigh from 350 to 650 kg (772-1,433 lb.) and are about 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft.) long. Adult female bears, called sows, weigh from 150 to 250 kg (331-551 lb.) and are 2 to 2.5 m (6.6-8.2 ft.) long. Adult polar bears need an average of 2 kg (4.4 lb.) of fat per day to maintain their weight. Their diet includes seals, walruses, whales, fish, and vegetation. Polar bears are strong swimmers, paddling dog-style with their front paws while holding their hind feet and legs flat like rudders. Scientists have tracked polar bears swimming continuously for 100 km (62 mi.). Polar bear cubs are born in a den from November through January. At birth, cubs weigh about 454 to 680 g (16-24 oz.) and are about 30 cm (12 in.) long. They are born helpless with their eyes closed, and appear hairless because of their very fine fur. Cubs open their eyes within the first month, and begin walking at two months. Cubs emerge from the den when they are four to six months old. By eight months, they weigh more than 45 kg (99 lb.). Polar bears at zoological parks provide opportunities for the public to learn about these animals and how human activities may impact their survival. Scientists and specialists study polar bear biology, including polar bear reproduction, birth and care of young, and communication.

We look at what science has to say about one set of polar bears, those living near Churchill, Manitoba, on and off the shores of Hudson Bay. Scientist Ian Stirling believes they are sending a signal from the eco-system. And as he studies their declining weight and falling birth rate, he worries something may be very wrong. The Magazine's Eve Savory takes us to "The Shrinking Bears" of Hudson Bay. They call helicopter pilot Steve Miller the "Eagle" for his acute vision. His passenger, Ian Stirling, calls Miller's ability to anticipate bear behavior, "Eagle magic". Stirling is one of the world's top authorities on polar bears. Steve Miller For 18 years "the Eagle" has maneuvered Ian Stirling and his tranquillizing dart rifle to a perfect shooting position four to five metres above the ground. "I think we're going to have to jabpole the first two with a little bit in the neck," Stirling says. "Oh yeah, the third one is down as well, that's good"

Extractions: Relationships with People Only recently in evolutionary time have bears adapted to life on arctic seas, but these great creatures have mastered the water and ice environment superbly. Over time they evolved a luxuriant white coat and layer of blubber for camouflage and warmth. Oversize feet serve as paddles for extensive swimming and spread their weight, helping this largest of modern carnivores (excepting Orcas ) to traverse ice too thin to support a person. During the Ice Age, seals adapted to life in icy northern seas. Their need to breathe and reproduce at the surface put a rich year-around food resource within reach of a population of brown bears that began to live more and more out on the ice. Natural selection favored those bears best able to catch seals, and they became more thoroughly carnivorous than other bears. By 100,000 years ago they had evolved into something like the polar bear of today. Although polar and brown bears now look and act rather differently, their genetic closeness is demonstrated by matings in zoos that produce fertile offspring.
