Extractions: Anthony Robb, Corner Post staff, ( reporter@cafnrcornerpost.com Jan. 27, 2003 - The MU mens' basketball team finished finals week last semester riding high at 6-0. A convincing win over Memphis had many basketball fans watching the AP and ESPN polls to watch the Tigers rise in the rankings. But when students headed home for the holidays, the Tiger defense took a holiday as well when MU lost to Illinois 85-70 in the annual "Braggin' Rights" game in St. Louis on Dec. 21. The Tigers soon resumed their winning ways by beating four teams in a row: Valparaiso, 65-47; Iowa, 88-82; Centenary, 88-58; and Baylor, 77-69 to open Big 12 Conference play. The team got a recruiting boost for next season with the transfer of Jason Conley to MU from Virginia Military Institute. Conley averaged 29.3 points per game (the most of any basketball player in the nation last year) and was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American at VMI. He will sit out the NCAA-required one year for transfer students and will join the Tigers on the floor beginning in Winter Semester 2004.
