Extractions: The Daily Illini The Illinois women's basketball team started its game with an 11-0 run and never lost the momentum on its way to a 97-34 stomping of the LKKA-Kuanas of Lithuania on Sunday afternoon. After 10 minutes into the first half the Illini never led by less than 11 points, and they ended the game with eight unanswered points to finish with their largest lead of the game, 63 points. Sophomore forward Cindy Dallas topped the stat sheet for the Illini with 24 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Shavonna Hunter happily took on her new role as team leader, adding 20 points, five assists and four steals. Hunter shot 8-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. "I basically take whatever the defense gives me," Hunter said. "My main objective is to penetrate the defense, so I can pass it off, but my shots were just there today." The Illini women, who focused on defensive fundamentals last week in practice, held the LKKA-Kuanas to only 15 second-half points and had 17 steals to the Lithuanians' seven. The Lithuanian club team committed 31 turnovers and had only one player, Rasa Zemantauskaite, reach double digits in scoring, with 13.

Men's Basketball Team Nicknameless - Sports - The Daily Illini Online Illini was coined to describe Illinois' Final Four basketball team. Through theyears, the name has taken on an inherited glory among Illinois sports fans. http://www.dailyillini.com/mar01/mar08/sports/stories/sports02.shtml
Extractions: Senior writer In 1989, the phrase "Flyin' Illini" was coined to describe Illinois' Final Four basketball team. Through the years, the name has taken on an inherited glory among Illinois sports fans. With this season's Illinois basketball team primed for an NCAA tournament run, it seems appropriate that this team be given something to remember it by. "I don't know what we could be," said Illinois junior shooting guard Cory Bradford. "I haven't really thought of it." The 1989 Flyin' Illini featured a lineup that dazzled the court with high-flying slams and acrobatic moves. This season's team wins without the flash. Sophomore forward Brian Cook believes people haven't seen enough of the team to coin a nickname. "That team had to do something to get that nickname," Cook said. "We are going to need to do the same to deserve a nickname." Illinois head coach Bill Self would rather wait and let other people find something to describe his squad. So, at least for the time being, should the team be the "Undefined Illini?"

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Vince Carter is clearly more comfortable in the air than on water. The high-flying Dream Teamer took a boat ride around Sydney Harbour for a television interview last week and quickly found his stomach doing more flips than a Romanian gymnast. "I nearly lost my lunch," he said. "Twice." It wouldn't be surprising if USA Basketball officials have been similarly queasy while watching Carter's occasional flare-ups toward opponents. He had minor altercations with Australians Andrew Gaze and Shane Heal during a warmup game for the Olympics, exchanged elbows with a couple of Lithuanian players during a preliminary-round game and went nose-to-nose with Russian guard Yevgeny Pachutin as the teams left the floor at halftime of Thursday night's quarterfinal game, which was won by the U.S. 85-70.
