Southwestern Baseball History The Southwestern baseball program has been a stepping stone to four year institutions and pro baseball for high school players from all across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Puerto Rico and Coach Mike Cook is prepared to continue this tradition! Over the past 20 years the baseball program has been and is regarded as one of the top Junior College programs in the mid-west for the development of players during their freshman and sophomore years of college. The year around commitment and comprehensive training program has made Southwestern a haven for players with lofty goals. The fall season is approximately 9 weeks in length. Included in the fall is a wealth of individual instruction to compliment a 30 game schedule. Indoor workouts play an important part of the development of the players at Southwestern. With a huge indoor workout facility, indoor batting tunnel and fully equipped weight room, the dedicated player can continue their progress during the cold months of November, December and January. The spring season most usually begins in the middle of March. Southwesterns southern trip to Alabama is considered one of the toughest slate of games among Northern J.C. programs. This southern trip combined with the excellent competition in the Iowa Division I Juco league will allow each and every player an opportunity to be exposed to numerous professional scouts and four year recruiters.

He was discovered doing batting practice at Vaughn Street Park in NW Portland. Bet that is something you did not know. Bobby Doerr was signed here. Jim Thorpe (yes, that Jim Thorpe) played for the Beavers, as did the great Negro League pitcher Satchel Paige. 2003 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the Pacific Coast League. Portland is one of the Charter members of that League, and is the last Charter City not to have Major League Baseball. While we at the Oregon Baseball Campaign work diligently to bring MLB to our city, we would be remiss if we didn't think we were standing on the shoulders of some incredible baseball history already. With the PCL's 100 Anniversary, we felt that it would be the goal of OSC to branch into something that would last well beyond the days when an MLB team arrives. Within the next year, this section of the site will grow into a baseball researchers haven for all things "Oregon Baseball". We start by displaying the 1903-1957 batting stats for the Beavers. These stats are the culmination of several months of work by Mark Miller of the OSC staff, Ron Selter and Kevin Saldana of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), and myself. The dates between 1930 and 1957 will be presented within the next couple of weeks, and we are converting data from 1957 through the present for consumption, hopefully, before opening day. Pitching stats will be posted, as they become available.

In the 1880s, teams began to play a couple of games a year against outside opposition and once defeated Villa Nova College, as Haverford's Main Line neighbor was then called. During this period, Haverford's only full-fledged major-leaguer, Bill Lindsay '06, graduated and went on to play for the Cleveland Naps, precursors of the Indians. Not until after World War I did America's National Pastime become a full-fledged varsity sport at Haverford, its formal recognition delayed by the great focus on cricket at Haverford and in Philadelphia long after most places had abandoned it. Haverford broke into varsity baseball in a big way with an inaugural victory over the mighty University of Pennsylvania in 1916, behind hurler George Haines Buzby '18, whose name graces the Haverford's baseball MVP trophy today. The sport flourished in the 1920's under the leadership of Roy Thomas, a former Philadelphia Phillies regular. In the late Twenties, pitchers Ken Kingham '29 and Henderson Supplee '30 regularly blanked opponents. Supplee skipped his senior year to join Connie Mack's world champion Philadelphia A's as the team's "26th Man."

Extractions: 1998 and Beyond Baseball was not played on the professional level during those early times, but was very popular as a "sandlot" attraction. As the popularity of the game grew, baseball was then presented to Ashevillians as an exhibition or demonstration sport. In fact, the largest crowd to ever witness a game in the city might have come during a Fourth of July celebration in 1893. For it was then, at Carrier’s Track, that natives witnessed foot races, dog races, horse races and a two-inning exhibition game. And believe it or not, the overflow crowd saw a game that pitted the "We-Un’s" versus the "You-Un’s," showing just how far we’ve come since the early beginnings. It sounds almost to good to be true, but the first organized professional baseball team in the city of Asheville was none other than the 1897 Asheville Moonshiners. Baseball had been played as a "club" sport in the mid-90’s, before the inception of the Moonshiners, who played in the Southeastern League. The Moonshiners played at Allandale Park, which was located somewhere on the French Broad River. The only known descriptions of the ballpark state that balls hit out to one field would travel into the river, while balls hit out to the other field would land in "Indian Territory," among the teepees. The Indians had served as a pickup opponent for locals for years and they were considered to be among the toughest opposition that the locals would face.

There was little local interest until around 1885, when a few matches were played in Melbourne. Enthusiasm strengthened in 1888 when American sports-equipment manufacturer A.G Spalding Esq. decided to upstage hockey and attempt to establish baseball throughout Australia. FIRST OVERSEAS TEAMS IN AUSTRALIA Between the 15 December 1888 and 5 January 1889, A.G, Spalding brought two teams, an All American and his side from Chicago. The Australian public viewed the matches in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and then Ballarat before heading of to India. The first game was played in Sydney on the ground of the Sydney Cricket Association. The game was in front of 4,000 people and the Australians lead the the 1-0 until the All American side tied the game in the 5th inning. It wasn't until the 9th inning where the All American side took out the game 2-1. The Americans were compelled to admit that whatever other respects the colonies might be inferior to the United States, they (Aussies) certainly possessed playing grounds so far superior in point of equipment and condition than they had in the US at the time. And there was no reason what so ever for comparison.

The sport had appeared as a demonstration sport seven times before it was made a medal sport starting with the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Baseball's premier as a demonstration sport at the Stockholm Games in 1912 was certainly an interesting one. After watching the American team warm up and seeing they were grossly overmatched, a Swedish team asked the Americans to loan them a pitcher and catcher. The U.S. obliged, but still won the game 13-3. Baseball's second appearance at the Games was equally as odd. At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, the U.S. was the only team to show up. Other countries had planned to send teams, but none did. Consequently, the U.S. broke into two teams and competed in front of a record crowd reported to be over 125,000.
