Duffy On a muddy abandoned industrial lot in south Wilmington in late October 1992, a small hastily gathered contingent of investors, politicians, contractors and the press gathered to break ground for a $6 Million ballpark. It was the culmination of a five year effort that had endured many setbacks and much opposition. It was the beginning of a breakneck construction project that in less than six months would see the fabulously successful return of professional baseball to Wilmington for the first time in 41 years. All of those present knew that the new team would take up the name of that last team, the Blue Rocks of the old Interstate League which had given up the ghost in 1952. Few however would know that when the home opener scheduled for April of 1993 finally came to pass, 110 years had passed since that spring of 1883 when Wilmington had first known professional baseball. The Wilmington fans cheered that following spring of 1993 as Whiz Kid hall of famer Robin Roberts threw out the first pitch to inaugurate the return of the Blue Rocks before a sell-out crowd. Many knew or had been reminded that Roberts had begun his professional career right here in Wilmington with "the Old Blue Rocks".

Rollins has played in NCAA post-season competition 16 times and twice played in the NAIA National Tournament. *** Rollins is the smallest school in college baseball history to play in the College World Series in Omaha. With only 700 students on the campus in 1954, the Tars posted a 25-8 overall record and finished second in the championships. They lost the championship game 4-1 to the University of Missouri. *** Under the direction of Head Coach Boyd Coffie, the 1989 Tars registered a 36-24 record and reached the Division II World Series. Rollins finished in fifth place in the Series. *** Rollins is the only school to advance to the national championship tournament at three different levels - NAIA, NCAA (all Divisions in 1954) and the NCAA Division II. *** Since 1947 the Tars have had only four head coaches. Two of those, Joe Justice (1947-1971) and Boyd Coffie (1972-1991), spent a combined 45 years guiding the Tars. Coffie is the schools career leader in victories with 586, while Justice won 482 games with an impressive .627 winning percentage.

By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's national pastime. Negro Baseball Beginnings: Negro Americans played baseball throughout the 1800s, and by the 1860s notable black amateur teams such as the Colored Union Club, in Brooklyn and the Pythian Club, in Philadelphia had formed. All-black professional teams began in the 1880s, among them the St. Louis Black Stockings and the Cuban Giants (of New York). Reflecting American society in general, amateur and professional baseball remained largely segregated During the 1890s, most professional black players were limited to playing in exhibition games on "colored" teams on the barnstorming circuit. Players on major league teams also barnstormed in cities and towns after the regular season was over. In some places black teams and white teams played each other, and some blacks played for all-black teams in otherwise all-white leagues.

Extractions: A lthough Abner Doubleday is credited with starting the game of baseball in 1839, in Cooperstown, NY, a man named Alexander Cartwright devised the modern rules. In 1845, Cartwright formed the Knickerbocker baseball club of New York. They played in the first recorded baseball match using Cartwright's rules. It took place June 19, 1846 at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, NJ. The New York club beat the Knickerbockers 23-1. Portrait of Alexander Cartwright T he popularity of amateur baseball soon led to the introduction of professional baseball. The first professional team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Their success against amateur teams provided incentive to create the first professional baseball league. Formed in 1871, the National Association of Baseball Players increased the popularity of baseball across America. But it was also surrounded by corruption and instability. In 1876, The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was started with a set of new guidelines with which to reform baseball. Charles Albert Comisky B aseball continued to be a rowdy sport into the 1890s. Byron Banford "Ban" Johnson and Charles Albert Comiskey then founded a league based on good virtue and strong leadership. This became the American league, where games were not played on Sunday and women were encouraged to attend.

Extractions: The Walker brothers, Fleet and Welday, played for Toledo of the American Association in 1884. From then on black players were barred from the mainstream major league teams. A few light-skinned Latin players did play in the majors in the 1890-1930 period. In 1947 Jackie Robinson broke the "unwritten" color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers . Within months Larry Doby Cleveland ) joined him and by the late 1940's and early 1950s most teams had at least one black player. Who was the last pitcher legally allowed to throw a spitball in the major leagues? Burleigh Grimes , the Hall of Fame hurler of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The last of 17 men who were deemed by baseball to be legalized spit ballers in 1920. Those men could throw the pitch the remainder of their career and on September 20, 1934, Grimes pitched one inning, striking out the last batter he ever faced - Joe Stripp. The other 17 men allowed to throw the legalized spitter were Doc Ayers, Bill Doak, Phil Douglas, Dana Fillingim, Ray Fisher, Ray Caldwell, Stan Coveleski Red Faber , Hub Leonard, Jack Quinn, Marv Goodwin, Clarence Mitchell, Dick Rudolph, Allan Russell, Urban Shocker, and Allen Sothoron.

The Spiders beat the Pirates, 6-3, in St. Augustine. 1899 - The owners of the Cleveland Spiders purchased controlling interest in the St. Louis Perfectos. They began shuffling players to enhance the Perfectos, who had finished last in 1898. In 1899, St. Louis advanced to fifth place, while the Spiders mired in 12th - - 84 games out. They left the National League after the season. 1901 - Lave Cross became the first major leaguer to play for four different teams . . . in the same . . . city. He joined the American League Philadelphia Athletics after having played previously for the American Association Athletics, the National League Phillies, and the Players League Quakers. 1919 - During spring training in Florida, Yankee outfielder Frank "Ping" Bodie beat Percy . . . in a spaghetti-eating contest. It took 11 servings for Bodie to outlast Percy . . . the ostrich.
