There is even a museum showcasing Junkanoo costumes, art and artifacts in downtown Nassaua cultural highlight and must-see attraction for all visitors. The origin of the word Junkanoo is obscure. Some say it comes from the French "L'inconnu" (meaning the unknown), in reference to the masks worn by the paraders; or "junk enoo," the Scottish settlers' reference to the parades, meaning "junk enough;" or "John Canoe," the name of an African tribal chief who demanded the right to celebrate with his people even after being brought to the West Indies in slavery. It is believed that this festival began during the 16th and 17th centuries. The slaves were given a special holiday at Christmas time, when they could leave the plantations to be with their family and celebrate the holidays with African dance, music and costumes. After emancipation, they continued this tradition and, today, Junkanoo has evolved from its simple origins to a formal, more organized parade with sophisticated, intricate costumes, themed music and incentive prizes.     Extractions: It is on these two islands where Loyalist settlers, driven from the US after the Revolutionary War, attempted to transplant their cotton culture to the tropics, bringing in slaves, building plantations, and cultivating the sparce soil. When the soil gave out, the chenile bug devastated the crops, Emancipation freed the slaves, and Europe found better grades of cotton in Egypt, many of the Loyalist families called it quits and left their land grants to their former slaves. Today, it is estimated that about a third of the land on Great & Little Exuma is held in "Commonage" by the descendants of those slaves. Great Exuma is about 35 miles long and ranges from 2-8 miles wide. The Tropic of Cancer runs directly through it, giving the island a very tropical feeling. The South Side of the island features marine fisheries, great mangrove forests and bonefish flats, and is mostly unsettled and unspoiled. The North (ocean) side of the islands harbor most of the small hotels, beaches, and communities. A highway runs from one end of the island to the other. Elsewhere on Great Exuma you will want to visit remote and beautiful Cocoa Plum beach, see the historic boat building community of Barre Terre, eat conch salad at Big D's conch shack, visit historic Rolle Town and it's old Loyalist cemetery. You must visit Stocking Island with it's great beaches, Monument mountain, Blue Holes and caves, nature trail, and stomatolites (the oldest living organisms, found ONLY here and in Australia). Also in the harbor are the impressive ruins of Crab Cay, and great dive and snorkel sites.

When an artist pulls from their unconventional imagination and lets his inner psyche map itself out through raw talent and various mediums. Why do some question their validity as Bahamian artists? If you are from the Bahamas and make art, do you have a responsibility to travel the path of artists before you and create what others think of as “art” in order to be deemed successful in society? John received a BFA in Illustration in 1995 and went on to receive a Masters in Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design. He originally went to school as an architecture student and eventually found his niche in illustration. He began making art and organizing shows of his work at such universities as Cambridge, Brown and Harvard. On his trips home from school, he was involved, with much success, in a two-person show at the former Bahamian Art Gallery. Cox left school fueled with the utmost confidence choosing to return home and develop his career in the Bahamas. Since his return he has shown his work worldwide. He was invited to do a one man show in Hong Kong and a show in Nice with two fellow Bahamian artists, entitled “Deconstructing stereotypes about Caribbean art”. He has shown his work in Paris and in Santa Domingo in a show entitled “Urban Life in the Caribbean” which is an ongoing travelling show stopping at Haiti, Puerto Rico and Guyana.

This name remained throughout the Spanish, French and British occupations until 1926, when it was changed to Cat Island by an act of the Bahamian Parliament. The name "San Salvador" was then given to a neighboring isle called Watling's Island.
