Extractions: This years edition of the 2002 - 2003 weekly badminton recreation club has been meeting on Monday evenings from five until seven , immediately following South Grenville team sports practices. The main purpose of the club is to get students and staff out to play badminton in a very informal setting, while at the same time gaining exercise in an enjoyable manner. For some of the more dedicated and intense badminton players, it is also a great way to prepare for the upcoming school varsity team which will compete in LGSSAA competitions in the spring. On the varsity and rookie team, there is room for singles players (two men and two women), doubles players (two teams of women and two teams of men), and mixed doubles players (two teams of one female and one male). All students are welcome to play, and there are occasional weeks where there are special staff guests to play against. There is a small fee to play for the upkeep of the nets and shuttlecocks. We are looking forward to seeing interested students in Gym A/B on Monday nights.

Extractions: STAFF WRITER Recently, Calvin has expanded its extracurricular sports to include badminton intramurals. Headed by the efforts of Michael Bloem, the intramural badminton program started just two weeks ago. With the activity just beginning, the meetings are still very informal. At this point in time it is being run in an open gym format, with a come-as-you-like philosophy. This means that there are no pressing require-ments for the people that choose to take part. Each night there is a different group of people that show up at any given time. Presently the intramural badminton time is 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday nights, in the East gym. Four nets are set up, and people start pick-up games by challenging others present to a match. Calvin has always hosted a spring badminton tournament, but this is the first time that there will be year-round badminton, even if it is in a casual setting. In other

Extractions: Staff Reporter Sackville resident Jennifer Robinson has tennis in her blood. The 12-year-old student's parents Doug and Janet, brother Mike and sister Kelly all play the game and Jennifer said it's just natural that she took it up. "I like playing tennis just because I enjoy it and my whole family basically plays it," she said. Jennifer started playing tennis when she was seven years old at a day camp in Sackville that was offering lessons. Now she's attended around 10 tournaments and is headed to P.E.I. to compete in the Summer Atlantic Championships this July. She will compete in the 12-and-under category. She qualified for the tournament by placing first in the New Brunswick Junior Tennis Provincials last month in Grand Falls where she also placed runner-up in the 14-and-under category. Jennifer said it was a long weekend, playing one game Friday, four Saturday and the two finals on Sunday.

We didn't win the tournament but it was fun. A lot of teams participated. It was challenging and there was a bit of pressure with everyone looking at you. When Paradise Panthers weren't playing, some of the players would go in the storage room and talk and practice. While we were practicing, the ball went up and hit the light. Mr. Coles didn't get angry either. Skating We went skating on four Tuesdays this year. We skated at the Glacier in Mt. Pearl from 9:00 - 11:30 in the morning. Some teachers went skating too. Two grades went skating at a time. Maybe they'll do it again next year!!
ABC Online News - Sports: Badminton Cator's selection means she will be one of a select few in world badminton to haveplayed in all three Olympic badminton competitions. The team in full David http://www.abc.net.au/news/olympics/sports/badminton.htm
Extractions: Badminton Its a fact that would surprise many people, but badminton is the worlds fastest racquet sport. During world-class matches, the shuttlecock is belted back and forth over the net at speeds that would make even a touring car champion go weak at the knees. Speeds of up to 260 kilometres an hour have been recorded, making agility and super-quick reflexes essential. Badminton became an Olympic sport in Barcelona in 1992, and had an immediate impact, returning some of the highest global television ratings of any sport. The reason for this is simple - it is huge in Asia. This popularity is reflected in results. Asian nations took home 14 of the 15 badminton medals at the Atlanta Games.

Extractions: 1997 was a great year. As a team we shared in all the ups and downs. Many teams would fall apart after some of the things we went through. Such as our Semi-Finals loss to scripps Ranch. But those things only made us stronger. It made the returning players even more determined and commited as ever. All our success this year, we will owe to last years team. Many of us had never known defeat until 1997. It taught us much and we have gained tremedously from it. Even though we loss, the season was fun and unforgetable for us all. And that is the most important part of being on a sports team. And let me be the first to say, everything that this year's team of `98 accomplishes, is dedicated to that team of `97! V-Tech Unlimited

Extractions: Competitive Sports In March 1959, Rong Guotuan, a table-tennis player, won the first world title in the sports history of China at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships held in Germany. From then to the end of 2001, Chinese athletes have altogether won 1,498 world championships and broken 1,045 world records; among them, 1,468 world championships were won and 877 world records were broken by Chinese athletes during the period between 1978 and 2001. Before the founding of the PRC in 1949, Chinese athletes had participated in the Olympic Games three times, but had failed to win any medals. However, after 1949, the Chinese government sent delegations to participate in five summer Olympics and six winter Olympics, winning a total of 52 gold medals. At the Los Angeles, Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic Games, China ranked No. 4 in the number of gold medals and reaped large numbers of other medals. China has also ranked No. 1 five times in a row in both the total number of gold medals and the total tally of medals from the 9th to the 13th Asian Games. The year 2001 was a bumper harvest year for China in competitive sports. Table tennis and badminton remained Chinas strongest sports events. The Chinese team bagged all the seven world titles in the World Table Tennis Championships. The Chinese badminton team won the Sudirman Cup once again. The performance of Chinese winter sports athletes proved once again that their past achievements were not transient. Chess player Zhu Chen became the second Chinese world champion after Xie Jun. In the Ninth National Games at the end of the year, 24 contestants broke seven world records 35 times, six contestants and one team chalked up six new Asian records seven times, 28 contestants broke nine Asian records 41 times, and 32 contestants and four teams chalked up 37 new national records 52 times.
