Extractions: "Watch the birdie." That is the saying that the Washburn Badminton Team is trying to stress this year. Currently, badminton is not one of the most well-attended sports at Washburn; however, players on the team are trying to gain support for their efforts. This year's team is led by senior captain Maja K. She is aided by her assistant co-captains Patricia B. (12) and Khua V.(11). Together, these ladies encourage the rest of Washburn's fairly young team. There is not a lot of representation from juniors or sophomores this year. Most of the team consists of seniors and freshmen. This does not discourage their team's spirit. They are determined to go out and give 100%. Although the coaching on the team is a little laid back, it forces the players to really commit. Oftentimes the coach will not tell the outcome of the match to the players, in the hopes that they will play their hardest for themselves and not for the sake of winning. "In badminton, you get out of it what you put into it," says senior captain Maja K. She feels that because badminton is not a pressure sport, athletes are forced to pressure themselves and test their own personal limits. The team always competes in the Mpls. City Conference and they also play one or two non-conference games. Traditionally, the team has not finished with a top position in the conference, but they have had impressive seasons. So far this year they have had four matches and performed well in all of them. When the Millers finish their season this year, they will all have a chance to participate in the State Tournament, because there are no regionals in badminton.

Extractions: ONLINE EDITION FRIDAY JUNE 08, 2001 News Sports Opinion Obituaries ... Contents Sports The 2001 badminton season saw no interruption in the Roslyn High School girls squad dominance of the sport in Nassau County. The Lady Bulldogs rolled to their ninth consecutive county team championship by defeating Lynbrook, 6 to 1. As amazing, this year's badminton team carried its undefeated mark to an incredible 163-0. Individual county winners from this stellar squad included Kate Dolinska, third singles; Norit Aeina and Ali Wainstock, third doubles; and Danna Finestone and Dana Greebel, fourth doubles. The coach for the Lady Bulldogs is Lynn Jacobson. Ms. Jacobson has been the constant during the badminton team's long and successful run. She started the program in 1974. Since then, the Lady Bulldogs have won 16 Nassau County titles, including seven straight in the 1970s. Ms. Jacobson said the remarkable success of the program has to do with the "love of the game" displayed by the players. "Kids play better when they have a passion for the sport," she said. Ms. Jacobson also coaches the tennis squad at Roslyn High School, and a number of her tennis players often end up on the badminton team. "If they can handle tennis with its emphasis on hand-eye coordination, then they do well at badminton, too," Ms. Jacobson noted. Members of the volleyball squad also play for the championship badminton team. Ms. Jacobson also said this past year's squad represented a "rebuilding team." The 2000 team graduated the first doubles team, the first singles players and part of the second doubles team. Still, the coach was able to find the right combinations in putting together winning doubles teams.
