Personalize this site BADGER W ith their flattened, oval shape, abundant grizzled brownish fur, distinctive white stripe on the forehead (sometimes continuing down the back) and powerful build, badgers are easily identified. They are the "bulldozer" of the weasel family. Large front claws suggest a capable burrower. The face is black with pale marks, the feet are black and the belly is pale. Total length is 28 – 32 inches, the short tail only 4 – 6 inches long. Weights range from 11 to 22 pounds. B B adgers eat mostly burrowing rodents, such as ground squirrels and pocket gophers, which they dig up during evening or early morning. They also eat nestling birds and rabbits, as well as insects. When frozen ground protects burrowing rodents from attack, badgers turn to mice. In especially cold weather they may simply retreat to their burrow to sleep. B adgers mate in late summer. Embryo implantation is delayed until about February. One to four young are born in early spring. They grow quickly and leave their mothers during their first autumn. They first breed first as yearlings. B adgers are well protected from most predators by a thick hide and generally unpleasant disposition. Some are killed for fur, but habitat loss and vehicular accidents probably are greater causes of mortality.

Extractions: The handsome and somewhat portly Badger is one of the largest members of the weasel family. It is widespread and common in North America, as long as there is suitable Habitat. Badgers live in open forested areas, or rangeland. In British Columbia, these habitats have been seriously reduced in the era of European settlement, and as a result the Badger is a rare mammal in this province. Fewer than 1,000 Badgers remain here, and they are restricted to the Okanagan Valley, north to Kamloops, and the East Kootenay region. Badgers spend much of their lives in burrows, which they dig with powerful forepaws and long claws. A female's maternity burrow complex is likely to include a split main tunnel, so two animals can pass, separate chambers for disposal of faeces, and a grass-lined bedding chamber. Badger litters average about two young, and are usually born in April. Like some other weasels, the Badger's reproductive system delays the implantation of the eggs in the uterus. The young are independent after about three months of their mother's care, and at this time they disperse to new territory. This movement may be as much as 100 kilometers, and is a time of high mortality in the young animals. Badgers are taken by Coyotes and Golden Eagles, but in an increasingly human environment, many are killed by cars and vermin poisons. If a young Badger escapes these threats, it must hunt efficiently to keep itself alive. Their diet is mostly small mammals, including a high percentage of fossorial species, or those that live in burrows.

Rural Intelligence Officer PC Nigel Lound appealed to people via the local media and the police's own website, to join a Badger Watch Group last autumn. PC Lound was overwhelmed by the response. Nearly 100 people have joined and since the group was formed in November, the police have seen a noticeable decline in the number of reports of possible badger diggers. "In the last four years we have received 198 reports relating to suspected badger digging," said PC Lound. "Since the formation of the Badger Watch Group more than two months ago, we've only had four. "Although it's a bit early to draw comparisons, I think the fact the group is operating and has received such good publicity is helping deter offenders." Members of the group are warned not to approach offenders. Instead they help catch criminals by being vigilant. Members visit known setts every couple of weeks and make note of any signs of activity.

Extractions: THE ALLAN BANTICK WILDLIFE PAGE Allan has become increasingly involved in Scottish wildlife conservation, and has experienced some of the highs and lows that such involvement brings. He has held a poisoned buzzard in his hands, then seen that bird fly away next day, healthy and anxious to be free. He has watched the distraught behaviour of a pair of ospreys whose eggs had just been stolen, then, a year later, watched that same pair raise a family of three fine youngsters. Allan was deeply affected by these and other similar experiences, and has now retired so as to devote most of his time to wildlife matters. He is currently the manager of the Strathspey Badger Hide, is a member of the Scottish Badgers Executive Committee, and is Coordinator of the Highland Badger Network for whom he runs a website. He also runs websites for the Scottish Beavers Network, and the local conservationists, the Badenoch and Strathspey Conservation Group. Allan assists with the monitoring and protection of ospreys, otters, badgers, dolphins and all manor of other birds and beasts as occasion demands, and helps Scottish Natural Heritage, the police, and various other bodies with an assortment of wildlife projects. Over the years Allan has been interviewed on TV, radio and in the newspapers about these activities and occasionally gets the chance to air his views to those who make decisions at national level that affect our wildlife.
