While many parents and children are looking forward to another year of learning and fun, back to school safety should be discussed among all family members. The Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health has prepared the checklist below to prepare your children for a safe return to school. Be sure your child knows his or her home phone number and address, your work number, the number of another trusted adult and how to use 911 for emergencies. Make sure your child has enough change to make a phone call or carries a telephone calling card. All children and family members must be properly restrained in the vehicle. This includes seat belts and child restraint systems. All children riding bikes must wear helmets. It's the law! For children walking to school, plan a walking route to school or the bus stop. Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings and use intersections with crossing guards. Test the route with your child. Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields and other places where there aren't many people around. Teach children - whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school - to obey all traffic signals, signs, traffic officers and safety patrols. Remind them to be extra careful in rainy, foggy or other inclement weather.

Extractions: Search: Home News Baltimore County, MD - Back to School Safety Tips Police Offer Parents Back to School Safety Tips Towson, MD (August 22, 2002) - Baltimore County police are reminding parents/guardians and children about back to school safety. Officers are routinely trained in child safety and missing children investigations. With the start of the new school year, they are sharing this information with parents. Although the police department educates children in school on stranger danger, learning who community helpers are and several other child safety topics, parents can also help. The following tips are just a few suggestions: Be aware of putting you child's name on anything that is readily visible. This might allow an abductor to get on a "first name" basis with your child and develop a sense of trust. Walk the route to and from school with your child pointing out safe places to go if they are being followed or need help. Talk to your child about strangers approaching them and some of the ploys they might use. Stress to them that adults shouldn't need a child's help to find a puppy or get directions, they should ask another adult for that information. Teach your children it is okay to say NO-tell them to trust their instincts.

This process requires all staff to do a floor-by-floor search, which may take a few minutes. As we are searching the building, we remind people to evacuate until the all clear is given. At this time we do not know if it is a false alarm, so we must treat it as if there is a fire in the building.

Extractions: According to the Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA), a recent study among 1,178 school children in France showed that both volleyball and inactivity in front of the TV can result in back pain among children, aged six to 20 years. Carrying a book bag by hand or over one shoulder, playing volleyball, and spending more than an hour a day in front of the tube all were found to increase the likelihood that the children would report significant back pain. Before school starts this fall, the OCA urges parents to get a complete physical for their children, including a spinal health exam. Ontario's Doctors of Chiropractic are authorized to diagnose and treat conditions concerning the spine, muscle and nervous systems. Chiropractors work to promote optimal health and wellness through positive lifestyles changes. The OCA is a voluntary membership organization representing more than 1,800 Ontario chiropractors. The objectives of the Association include public education and research devoted to improving the quality of health care for the citizens of Ontario. In 1995, the chiropractic profession marks the centenary of its founding, by a Canadian, Dr. David Daniel Palmer, from the Ontario town of Port Perry.

Every year 200,000 kids suffer playground injuries serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Moms, dads and caregivers treat many more injuries, and even more go unattended. While scrapes and bruises are part of growing up, be assaults, head injuries and fractures should not be. How can I protect my child from injury? Starfleet's android, Lt. Commander Data, asked a child in Star Trek Insurrection , "I've wondered what it is like to be a child, how can you keep from falling down when the length of your legs is constantly changing?" The young man's answer was "Sometimes I do." We should expect some discoordination in our kids to lead to minor injuries. But most serious injuries are usually the result of poor judgement from stunts, which test the limits of common sense and gravity. While we can't often prevent these lapses in judgement, some simple precautions can prevent more serious injuries.

Extractions: The summer will soon be over and, before you know it, the kids will be starting back to school. For some of us the ringing of the school bell will bring a big sigh of relief. Some parents will experience some nervousness and fear for little ones going off to school for the first time. The children are another story. While they dread the thought of sitting in classrooms, they look forward to seeing and meeting friends. Younger children may be excited about riding the bus, a real adventure experienced without their parents tagging along. No matter what age the child is, we need to remember a few safety tips to ensure he/she has a great and safe year at school. Buying supplies: Watch out for sharp edged objects when buying school supplies. Rulers with metal strips and sharp scissors are not for younger children. Scissors should be blunted and the rulers constructed of plastic. Protractors with sharp points pose a hazard for younger children. The labels on the glue and paste bottles should be read and checked for toxic materials.
Back To School Safety Alert - Sonic Net, Inc. back to school safety ALERT CPSC Urges Bicyclists to Wear HelmetsWith many families' backto-school preparations well underway http://content.sonic.net/parents/article/archive/bikes.shtml
Extractions: Step-Parenting CPSC Urges Bicyclists to Wear Helmets With many families' "back-to-school" preparations well underway, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges parents to include bicycle helmets on the list of items for those youngsters planning to bike to school. Each year about 1,200 bicyclists are killed and more than half a million bicycle-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms. About one-third of these deaths and two-thirds of the injuries involve school age children under the age of 15. Three out of four of the deaths are due to head trauma and about one-third of the injuries are to the head or face. It is estimated that helmets are now worn by fewer than one out of 10 bicyclists. Some of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented if the rider had been wearing a helmet. The purpose of a helmet is to absorb the energy of an impact to minimize or prevent a head injury. Crushable, expanded polystyrene foam generally is used for this purpose. Many helmets also have a hard outer shell which can provide additional protection to the head in the event of a collision with a sharp object.
