Product Description
The escalating use of aircraft in the 21st century demands a thorough understanding of engine propulsion concepts, including the performance of aero engines. Among other critical activities, gas turbines play an extensive role in electric power generation, and marine propulsion for naval vessels and cargo ships.

In the most exhaustive volume to date, this text examines the foundation of aircraft propulsion: aerodynamics interwoven with thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanical design. With a finely focused approach, the author devotes each chapter to a particular engine type, such as ramjet and pulsejet, turbojet, and turbofan. Supported by actual case studies, he illustrates engine performance under various operating conditions.

Part I discusses the history, classifications, and performance of air breathing engines. Beginning with Leonardo and continuing on to the emergence of the jet age and beyond, this section chronicles inventions up through the 20th century. It then moves into a detailed discussion of different engine types, including pulsejet, ramjet, single- and multi-spool turbojet, and turbofan in both subsonic and supersonic applications.

The author discusses Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft, and provides a comprehensive examination of hypersonic scramjet and turbo ramjet engines. He also analyzes the different types of industrial gas turbines having single-and multi-spool with intercoolers, regenerators, and reheaters.

Part II investigates the design of rotating compressors and turbines, and non-rotating components, intakes, combustion chambers, and nozzles for all modern jet propulsion and gas turbine engine systems, along with their performance. Every chapter concludes with illustrative examples followed by a problems section; for greater clarity, some provide a listing of important mathematical relations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This book is excellent for Aerospace Engineering students and engineers alike. Contains plenty of graphs, tables, and "back-of-the-napkin" equations.

I wouldn't recommend this so much as a "learning the concepts" text book,as it doesnt always explain the data it is present very well. However for those already familiar with the topics covered it provides excellent reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I'm working in the Aerospace industry and for me there are only two books on the subject that I use for unclassified reference litterature - this book and "Rocket Propulsion Elements" by C. Sutton.
This book covers almost everything on the preliminary design level of a rocket propulsion system. Except for the typing errors this book is perfect. And I can surely recommend it for students as well as professionals.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Un Buon punto di partenza"

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" in any Aerospace Professional's Library
This book is THE definitive work on rocket and space propulsion.Unlike any other textbook on the subject, this text permits you to start with a blank sheet of paper and literally design a propulsion system from theground up that meets user requirements. You can then assess the overallsystem performance.Highly recommended. If you are going to purchase anybook on this topic - I recommend you start with this one! ... Product Description
A companion volume to "Electrogravitics Systems: Reports on a New Propulsion Methodology," this book delivers (1) the scientific validation from three different authorities; (2) the compelling public history of gravity research conducted by the aviation industry before it became 'unacknowledged' and (3) testimonials which eye-witnesses have provided. In total, this anthology attests to the validity of the Biefeld-Brown high voltage force effect. The book's Science Section includes a well-known "electrokinetic force" and how it works; the proposed ion mobility explanation; and how electricity and gravity may couple. The Historical Section contains seven articles about T.T. Brown, gravity research, etc. Also included are a Testimonial Section and Patent Section. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever on new Propulsion Systems
I can not recommend this book strongly enough. It is a delight to read and a big source for any one interested in new propulsion systems. My be "new" is not the proper word for it as most of the propulsion theories and methods are actually dating back to the 2nd World War.The Author Thomas Valone PhD has created something called Integrity Research Institute which is a publishing company for future energies - Zero Point Energy The Fuel of the Future etc. You can write to the Institute and ask for the free CD, it is full of interesting goodies, such as a video clip of a real, huge and rotating UFO-disk filmed somewhere in Bulgaria. I have read Gravitics I and II and recommend them both highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is poor import
The Kindle version of this book is poor to read. Paragraphs are disjointed. Some paragraphs never end with a complete sentence or a period. The biggest problem is between sections 208 and 220. The mathematical formula is missing. This looks like a font is missing. I am using my IPAD to view and type this review. Kindle version is 2.01. This is not a review on the contents of the book. The implementation is the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electrogravitics II: Validating Repports on a New Propulsion Metadology
An excellent overview of the history and current progress of electrogravitics. It is not a do it yourself book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More In Depth Look at EG
This book was very mathematically oriented - much different than EG1.It had very good info, but was more a compilation of other people's articles and research.

If you're looking for a book along the lines of EG1, you will be disappointed here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice work
Succeeding to the book by T.Valone, "Electrogravitics systems", this is a nice pack of discovories on the Biefeld-Brown effect, which also contains the scientific validation conducted by different research teams in the world. It might be very helpful for reserchers to make further investigations on the electro-gravitic effect. ... Read more

Product Description
In this definitive study, J. D. Hunley traces the program's development from Goddard's early rockets (and the German V-2 missile) through the Titan IVA and the Space Shuttle, with a focus on space-launch vehicles. Since these rockets often evolved from early missiles, he pays considerable attention to missile technology, not as an end in itself, but as a contributor to launch-vehicle technology.

Focusing especially on the engineering culture of the program, Hunley communicates this very human side of technological development by means of anecdotes, character sketches, and case studies of problems faced by rocket engineers. He shows how such a highly adaptive approach enabled the evolution of a hugely complicated technology that was impressive--but decidedly not rocket science.

Unique in its single-volume coverage of the evolution of launch-vehicle technology from 1926 to 1991, this meticulously researched work will inform scholars and engineers interested in the history of technology and innovation, as well as those specializing in the history of space flight. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb History of Rocket Technology in America
Every few years a benchmark study appears on some aspect of space history that reinterprets our understanding of the subject. J.D. Hunley, whom I freely admit is a longtime friend and colleague, has published--along with two additional volumes on the history of rocket technology in the United States, "Preludes to U.S. Space-Launch Vehicle Technology: Goddard to Minuteman III" and "U.S. Space-Launch Vehicle Technology: Viking to Space Shuttle"--a major study of the history of U.S. rocketry. "The Development of Propulsion Technology for U.S. Space-Launch Vehicles, 1926-1991" is Hunley's magnum opus and will hereafter provide the starting point for studying this subject.

This book accomplishes three critically important tasks exceptionally well. First, it fills what is unquestionably a tremendous gap in the literature of space launch. There is no single book or even a small collection of books where anyone may find a comprehensive history of rocket technology. Most of what is available is superficial, such as Frank Winter's "Rockets into Space" (Harvard, 1990), or concentrates on specific launch systems, such as David Stumpf's excellent book, "Titan II: A History of a Cold War Missile Program" (Arkansas, 2000). Hunley's work is a cohesive whole that analyzes that story much more even-handedly and effectively. It will undoubtedly become the standard resource on this subject.

Second, it does a superb job of tracing the main lines of development of the major rocket technologies. Much of the existing literature overemphasizes the contributions of the German rocketeers under Wernher von Braun, and while they were clearly important, almost as important were influences coming out of Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, often through the Aerojet Corporation, along with many other companies, institutions, and universities.

Third, Hunley explores in some detail the process of innovation. We know too little about the origins of these launch technologies, coming as they do from large, anonymous organizations. But he illuminates decisions and direction in technological development that have never been explored before. His work is a benchmark in the process of the invention of spaceflight and its evolution over time. He employs the concept of "engineering science" to the subject of rocket technology, noting that at least until very late in the development of American rocketry, there was fundamentally no body of theory that would allow engineers to predict how new technologies would function in the harsh environment of launch and operations in space. Engineers would design a rocket and encounter problems in static or flight-testing (or both) and then had to undertake cut-and-try methods to correct problems. This happened repeatedly, and the various shuttle accidents, as Hunley demonstrates, points up the magnitude of the problem. In this way what engineers did was hardly science in the sense that they developed a body of knowledge that would allow prediction of how these machines would operate.

There is much to praise and little to criticize in this fine volume on the history of U.S. rocket technology. I am proud that this fine work appeared in the "Centennial of Flight Series" at Texas A&M University Press which I have edited since its inception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable and balanced account
In the October 2008 issue of _Technology and Culture_, Yasuchi Sato wrote about this book: "The first two chapters provide a reliable and balanced account of the development of all major space-launch vehicles, military and civilian, flown up to 1991." He adds: "The rest of the book goes into details of the evolution of specific propulsion technologies. . . . This book," Sato concludes, "is based on Hunley's total mastery of the literature in relevant fields. Both primary and secondary sources are so vast that integrating and synthesizing them is no small feat. Moreover, as Hunley points out, the sources are often inconsistent. Thanks to Hunley's critical examination of the sources, this book will be a valuable reference for historians of American space programs." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Look at the Future of Fusion for Space
This book is a well written introduction on how fusion technology might be applied to space propulsion. The first few chapters give the basics of fusion engines. The descriptions of magnetic confinement and intertialconfinement fusion are some of the best I have seen. The material istechnical enough for those who have studied fusion for years, and partsthat are too technical can be skimmed without loss of understanding inlater chapters. These later chapters describe fusion initiated byantiprotons and catalyzed by the muons that are produced bymatter-antimatter annihilation. This seems to be a very efficient way touse very smallamounts of antimatter. The technical details of thefusion rocket engines were very well researched, and were quite detailed. The only problem I found in the book was in the list of fusion fuels intable 2 of chapter 1, where there are several typographic errors (there is,of course, no beryllium-3 isotope). There is also an error in the data forthe lithium-7/proton reaction, giving beryllium-7/neutron products as 80%. This reaction rate would require a temperature of nearly 20 billion degreesKelvin, whereas it would not occur at ignition temperatures (~1 billiondegrees Kelvin). Overall, the book is very well done, and thespeculation in the book is backed by good research and theory.Thepossibilities that are envisioned by this book for the future of fusion inspace propulsion are great. ...
