Product Description
Richard Hillary was born in Australia in 1919 and brought up in England. Oxford educated, he was a writer foremost who was also a fighter pilot. When World War Two came he joined 603 Sqn and became an ace in the Battle of Britain. His life changed when he was shot down in September 1940, suffering severe burns to his face and hands. During a long and painful recovery he wrote the wartime classic The Last Enemy, an outstanding literary contribution. Anxious to return to flying, he pushed himself to the limit and was killed when his Blenheim crashed in 'mysterious' circumstances on 8 January 1943. He was aged only 23.

He had by then become a legend, a courageous hero, not without his faults, around whom a cult following has developed. Over years, David Ross patiently researched all relevant papers and documents, including from the Richard Hillary Trust Archive in Oxford, and talked at length to Hillary's contemporaries. This eminently readable, first complete biography with many previously unseen photos sets the record straight, and now appears in paperback for the first time, with new photographic material.

David Ross is currently working on a definitive history of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron R AUX F and his biography of Gerald Stapleton, Stapme, is also being published in 2002 by Grub Street. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly researched and written biography
Richard Hillary was a decorated fighter pilot who flew and fought in the Battle of Britain during the some of darkest days of World War II. He became an ace pilot and was shot down in September 1940 by enemy fire, experiencing severe facial burns. During a painful recovery he wrote the wartime classic, The Last Enemy under the pen name David Ross. He returned to flying but was killed in a Blenheim on January 8, 1943, at the age of 23. Richard Hillary is a superbly researched and written biography of a remarkable young man and highly recommended reading, especially for anyone with an interest in World War II, the Battle of Britain, and the young men who stood against a seemingly overwhelming tyranny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biography I've read
A biography of a fighter pilot and author.

This book expertly captures the emotions of the time in which it is set whilst giving us an in depth look at the life of one of our Battle of Britain heros.

It is extremely well researched and puts right many of the inaccuracies of previous publications. If you have read The Last Enemy, then this is a 'must read'. It will appeal to a broad spectrum; not only those interested in aviation, history or the lives of authors and pilots. This is not your standard military aviation book, it is full of facts, yes, but it is also an exciting, emotive and most of all, enriching read.

I have never read a book on squadron history but will definitely read this authors book to be published next year on No. 603 squadron (Richard Hillarys squadron based in Edinburgh).

Finally, don't be put off by the size of it....it's a great read with plenty of photos (some never seen in the public domain before)! ... Read more

Product Description
The Golden Era of Naval Aviation: An Aviator's Journey, 1939-1959 is a personalized account of an aviator's journey through twenty years of Naval Aviation. Author Lieutenant Commander A.M. "Mike" Granat, United States Navy (Retired) takes you into a world little-known or experienced by the average individual. Those early days of flight training will carry you along on apprehensive days of reaching for those coveted "Wings of Gold". Laced with humor, suspense and a bit of romance, the years span oceans and continents, East and West, North and South. From the vast expanse of the South Pacific flying Patrol Bombers during World War II, to the Far East in Military Transports; Alaska operations as an Air/Sea Rescue pilot, to carrier duty in a Fighter Squadron. Duties as a Flight Deck Officer will have you shivering on icy decks off the coast of Greenland while sweltering in the steamy Mediterranean and Caribbean. Reliving the days as a Flight Instructor leaves one with the taste of the interaction between student aviator and the instructor. The author depicts an age in Naval History that will never be repeated - the story of the early propellor aircraft to the coming of the jets. A transition, fueled by WWII that was remarkable. No time in Naval Aviation saw such extraordinary changes in so short a period. He relives it all in his own words and shares with the reader a saga of progress and achievement unmatched in aviation history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
What a great book!I maintain a large and quite popular website, mainly devoted to aviation. It generates lots of emails from strangers, many of whom become friends.Mike, the author of this book, falls into that category.I had just restored a Lockheed Constellation for the Museum of Flight in Seattle, and the four+ year endeavor, is covered in detail on my website ([...]).Mike flew Super Connies, found my website, and sent me an email. When we found we lived close to each other, we got together to swap stories. He presented me with an autographed copy of his book. It's excellent - very easy reading and fast-paced, and I finished it in 2 evenings.I learned quite a bit - including the story of the NAPs - enlisted men trained as pilots in the Navy - something I didn't know before. In many ways, our stories, while completely different, share much in common - flying many different airplanes, living and working in far-flung places.Having worked and flown in the Arctic for some years, I especially liked his Adak experiences. All in all, the Navyprovides amazing job opportunities and varying responsibilities that create a superb officer and well-rounded individual - a real asset to our country. His story is not unique - but most do not write down their memories - and this gives us a window into the lives of many other people.

Thanks, Mike - for a fine book, and for your years of service. And now, -- for your friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Golden Career in a Goden Age
First I want to talk a little bit about the way this book is published. I suspect that Mike Granat sent the manuscript of this book to several mainstream publishers and got a series of rejection slips for his effort. In the old days that would have been the end of this book. Undeterred, he then turned to a so called 'on-demand' publisher that has newer sophisticated equipment that allows them to publish books in very low volumes, and just in time to meet the demand from customers. This type of publishing, combined with the power of Amazon and the internet allows this book to see the light of day when it otherwise probably wouldn't.

And this is good, because this is an excellent book. Mike enlisted in the Navy in November of 1939. Because of the long waiting list he went into the Aviation Machinist School, and over the next couple of years alternated various technical schools with squadron duty in a flying boat squadron.

Nine days after the attack he was at Pearl Harbour and soon thereafter was in the South Pacific in a PBY 'Catalina' unit. These were the lean times when aircraft were hard to get. Their squadron flew endless patrols, and began to take the fight to the Japanese using bombs and torpedoes. This became the famous 'Black Cats' that attacked at night coasting in at very low engine power to reduce the noise.

In 1943 Flight Training finally opened up and he became a pilot, an officer and a gentleman. This began a career in Naval Aviation unlike many others. He flew in over 30 different types of aircraft from a 150 HP Culver Cadet to the Lockheed Super Constellation with four 3200 HP engines. Included were fighters (Hellcat, Bearcat, Tigercat, early jets), flying boats (PBY, Albatross) and more transports than I could count.

I was reminded again and again of the old saying that flying is 99+% boredom, and moments of sheer terror.

Mike is correct that this was indeed the Golden Era of Naval Aviation. Never again will there be such rapid advances in technology, so massive efforts at putting out a Navy of this size. This is a most interesting book showing a side of the Naval service not seen by outsiders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superman flies
Nothing stops this man. He lives his dream. And he does it with such good grace and aesthetic sense, that it leaves you wondering that it was even real. A work of art of a life. Makes one feel shabby by comparison, a complainer about trifles, a quitter. We all max out at about the same number of breaths in this span. Or fewer. Don't let worry about that, or anything else, stop you. Climb aboard Neal's racing plane, the "Loving's Love" for the antidote.

The real definition of passion in this little book's pages. Samurai level.

When Americans fell in love with aviation in the 1920s and 1930s, African American found their enthusiasm met with discrimination. In this inspiring account of her life, Janet Harmon Bragg, the first African American woman to earn a full commercial pilot's license, recalls a life of mutilfacted achievement, in which every obstacle was seen as a challenge. 16 illustrations.Amazon.com Review
Janet Harmon Bragg was the first black woman to earn a fullcommercial pilot's license, a feat remarkable in itself, but all themore so when considered in the context of her times. Bragg learned tofly in the 1930s, a time when many whites believed blacks lacked theintelligence to learn how to fly. In fact, as her friend relates in anappendix to this book, when Bragg first tried to get her commerciallicense, the Federal Aviation Administration examiner passed her, butrefused to issue her a license, claiming that he was not going to bethe first to license a black woman. Bragg persevered, however, andestablished a path that future generations of black aviators wouldfollow. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "If Jack can do it, so can Jill"
This was the motto of Janet Harmon Bragg's father as he raised his children at the turn of the century. Janet was taught never to let her sex or her race get in her way. She was trained as a nurse at Spelman College and went on to become a pilot, and even helped found flying schools and clubs for African American aviators. The book is not completely focused on her flying days, and it would have been interesting to hear more about that, but we learn about her nursing career, the homes for the elderly that she and her husband operated, and the many African young people she took under her wing when they came to study in the United States. These people went on to become leaders in their own countries, and she visited them throughout the world in her later years. The book is neither difficult nor long (112 pages), and Ms. Bragg's narration has an infectious upbeat tone. I recommend it as reading for young people, especially young people of color, who are just beginning to think about the possibilities that life may hold for them. ... Read more

Product Description
The Rockford Register-Republic newspaper carried the headline in January 1945: "Aboard a Flying Fortress which appeared a flaming torch, spewing gasoline from its load of 15,000 gallons and trailing fire like a comet, a bomber crew which included LtCol Fred J. Ascani, Rockford pilot, continued its run over a Ploesti oil field target and came through safely . . . " This was only one of 53 WWII missions flown by the talented aviator and reported by American newspapers. Truth be told, Ascani's contributions to the development of airpower would be covered extensively by the media right up until he retired from the United States Air Force in 1973. History would remember MGen Ascani, not only as the 1951 World Speed Record Holder, but also as a tough and demanding task master, who recognized the dangers of emerging aviation technology. He was a devoted flyer who wanted to experience the thrill of every new engine and airframe designed to free man from the bonds of earth. He would contribute to the "Golden Age of Flight Test," develop the process by which the fledging USAF would turn experiments into combat system and then go on to direct the XB-70 program, technology later used to build the world's first reusable space craft: the space shuttle. By the time he retired from the USAF in 1973, he had logged some 6288 hours of flying time in an incredibly unique variety of aircraft. Mentor Inbound is his story as told to and recorded by Sheryl Hutchison. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Engineering Story
I read this book in a few days finding my selves completely absorbed in the story. The design and building of the 747 in the short time frame is a major achievement and reading about it is highly inspiring.

Product Description
On July 2, 1937, in a totally capable, twin-engined airplane, America's First Lady of the Air disappeared in the South Pacafic, creating one of the 20th Century's greatest mysteries. This book, the only one on Amelia Earhart endorsed by top aviation authorities, explores the woman, the technology, the circumstances, and the intrigue. Jam-packed with facts that will inform and inspire you, you'll feel the authors' enthusiasm and love for aviation, and appreciate their attention to detail. So get into your favorite easy chair and fasten your seatbelt. You're in for an incredible journey.Discover the Answers to These Gripping Questions: Why did she disappear? Was she on a secret spy mission? Was she captured by the Japanese? Has a piece of her airplane or a shoe been found? How accurate was her navigation? Was the flight sabatoged? Was she proficient with her radios? Was she a skiiled-enough pilot? What really happened? The authors---both pilots, mechanics, and aviation experts in their own right---present the true and most accurate story. Breaking new factual and logical ground, a fascinating portrait of Amelia emerges, stripped of media hype, providing a reality known by few. A work of extensive, well documented research, superlative synthesis, and inescapable conclusion, Amelia Earhart--Case Closed? reveals the truth about this courgeous woman and her attempt to circle the globe. You'll gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for who this corageous woman was and what she did. You'll learn the truth about what happened to her and be inspired by her determination...Patty Wagstaff, National Aerobatic Champion, says this in her Foreword: Amelia Earhart was American as apple pie. She's one of our most beloved heroines, who fascinated the word with her special charm and vision. Decades after her disappearance, we are still intriqued with her exploits, accomplishments, and life.Known to many as AE, she was on a mission, as are all great adventurers and goal achievers. Her mission was our mission and is an integral part of our culture. Amelia combined forward thinking with daring and strove for accomplishment with bravery, and that is her legacy.During the 50s and 60s when I grew up, role models weren't so designated, however, Amelia was a role model for me. People loved calling her the female Lindbergh, perhaps to explian or justify how a woman could be so capable, confident, and motivated. It was often said that she was ahead of her time, but I believe she was in tune with it. She sensed the opportunities before her and took advantage of them. The reason Amelia is still considered so great is that she forged ahead with her goals. She went up against the odds facing her as a woman, particularly in aviation. She was able to look an interviewer or camera in the eye and talk about her journey and her mission, without apologies or excuses. She never sacrificed her personality or lost her identity. She always maintained her womanhood and a certain sweetness, while participating in what was considered a man's field. She and many others knew she was a pilot, not just a woman pilot. She was able to transcend preconceived ideas about women in aviation, and advocated women doing other things only men had done. This was her gift to me as a woman, and indeed to all of us.There has never been a shortage of theories about Amelia's fate. With impeccable qualificaitons as airframe and powerplanet mechanics, pilots, and aviation experts, the authors took on a real challenge with this book. The result is a reader-friendly, provocative book that I couldn't put down. I felt like I was in the cockpit with Amelia! They present the facts, sharing the results of their well-documented research. As Amelia's life continues to inspire us, we are fortunate to have this book that reveals the truth about her life and journey. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great pictures, useful study of pioneering aircraft
Schiffer books are marvels of their kind. They pile photo upon photo, so generously that sometimes (in the case of Myrha's book) the editors sometimes print the same photo twice. My favorite in this case is the picture that shows an early flying-wing glider in the Hortens' dining room, the wing extending through the door into the next room.

The weak point of the Schiffer organization is that they don't seem to edit their books. Printing the same photo twice is one result. Another is that the most important single fact in the book--the day the Hortens first flew an all-wing aircraft--appears to be wrong by a year.

Never mind! We won't get a better treatment of these German geniuses (well, one genius anyhow, and one brave test pilot) who created aircraft that were 50 years ahead of their time. When the Americans occupied Germany in May 1945, they found a Horten all-wing fighter-bomber on the assembly line, all but ready for combat. In theory, it would have been capable of Goering's dictat that any new warplane must meet a 1,000 X 3 performance envelope: carry 1000 kg of bombs 1000 km at a speed of 1000 km/ph. If the war had gone on a few more months, the Allies might have encountered a surprise as nasty as the Messerschmitt jet and rocket-powered interceptors.

There was even a plan on the drawing board for a Horten "Amerika Bomber" capable of carting a non-explosive atomic bomb to New York. (The Germans, unable to achieve a chain reaction, figured that radioactive debris would serve as well to destroy a city.)

For the serious collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars Together with "Nurflugel" from Horten/Selinger, a standard!!
As a Horten model-builder/pilot, this was missing in the collection of books about the flying-wings from the Hortenbrothers, some mistakes in time and subscripts by the foto's are no problem for the Horten-fan. The storyis well told, some of the statements are new, the rest is a good detailedoverview of Horten-history. I will show it to Mr H. Scheidhauer, thetestpilot age 86!, who still lives in Germany, and is a good friend ofmine. A big compliment for Mr.D.Myhra. Erik van den Hoogen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meticulous research, marred by stupid errors
This is the best thing available in English about the Horten brothers and their remarkable Flying Wings, which resembled those built by Jack Northrop in the U.S. (As usual, the Germans got there first.) Myhra has done a first-class job of research and of assembling photographs, but the final result is marred by numerous typographical errors, mistakes in fact, duplications of photos, and what looks very much like fictionalizations. -- Dan Ford ... Product Description

Among the many technological advances of this century that have shrunk our country, few have had as great an impact as aviation. Technologies evolve and national priorities change, but the qualities necessary to design aircraft, fly them in war and peace, and manage airlines remain constant. In this, his second book about pioneers of Canadian aviation, Peter Pigott brings a richness and understanding of the individuals themselves to the reader.

Flying Canucks II takes us into Air Canada's boardroom with Claude I. Taylor, to the Avro Arrow design office with Jim Floyd, inside the incredible career of Aviation Hall of Fame pilot Herb Seagram, on C.D. Howe's historic dawn-to-dusk flight, and with Len Birchall in a Stranraer seaplane before he became, in Churchill's phrase, "The Saviour of Ceylon." It includes the story of how Scottish immigrant J.A. Wilson engineered a chain of airports across the country, how bush pilot Bob Randall explored the polar regions, and the ordeal of Erroll Boyd, the first Canadian to fly the Atlantic. The lives of "Buck" McNair and "Bus" Davey, half a century after the Second World War, are placed in the perspective of the entire national experience in those years. Whenever possible, Mr. Pigott has interviewed the players themselves, and drawing on his experience and contacts within the aviation community, has created a multi-faceted study of the business, politics, and technology that influenced the ten lives explored in depth in this book.

C.D. Howe, wartime Canada's absolute government czar used to say that running the country's airline was all he really wanted to do. With a rich aviation heritage such as this, Flying Canucks II depicts the elements and the enemy at their worst and the pioneers of Canadian aviation at their best.

Product Description
His name was synonymous with speed, his flamboyant persona as carefully crafted as that of a Hollywood star. Born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1895, Joe Turner was an aerial showman, an audacious risk taker, and a tireless self-promoter who focused America's attention well into the 1960s on the potential of aviation for the common good. With complete access to Turner's personal papers, photographs, and memorabilia, biographer Carroll V. Glines presents the first full account of the life of this American daredevil aviator. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars History but also great Genealogy Book
Roscoe Turner was my grandfathers cousin so naturally I have been very interested in this book. It has a lot of family pictures in it and I use it for genealogy as well as history. I have read the entire book and found it very interesting and well written with a ton of pictures. I would recomend this book and have purchased quite a few of them for gifts.
If you don't like to read, the pictures are worth the purchase. I like to read but even I had to put it down and come back to it. Not a book you can read at one sitting unless you are a speed reader and that would come in handy for this book but I wanted to soak in the words so I took my time reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Story of a Key Figure of the Golden Age of Aviation
This book is a relatively well written story of one of the key figures of the golden age of aviation, Roscoe Turner. Through flying in races, movies, record breaking flights and attempting to stay financially aloft, this is a good overview of a life. The only issue I had with this book was that it never truly conveyed the character of Mr. Turner and seemed more like a chronology than a true biography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all aviation enthusiasts!!
I recently purchased this book and I love it. I am a huge plane fanatic and enjoy many books, flight sims, websites, etc. on planes. I can say that out of all my books this is by far my favorite. It has planes, airports, important dates, crashes, almost anything that has to do with aviation. It is very comprehensive. It is literally a dictionary of events that occured in avation history. It starts in the year 1500 with da Vinci, begins in large detail in the year 1900 and stays that detailed until the year 2000. It is a must for anyone who enjoys planes and aviation in general as much as I do. A terrific book. ... Read more

Product Description
From dustjacket comments fo Clifford W Henderson... It should be told that aviation historians will forever be obligated to Professor David D. Hatfield for the competent and deicated manner in which he has assembled this pictorial progress and growth of aviation in a photo-biography format. This is not a simple accomplishment because much of this material was the personal property of individual pilots and builders. Much had been neglected as worthless. Fortunately, through Prof. Hatfield's efforts, a vast library covering every facet of past aviation has been assembled and classified for ready reference, and is now placed in Northrop University's American Hall of Aviation History. ...
