Product Description
What are stars?
Why does the moon change shape?
How close is the nearest planet?

Budding astronomers will find answers to all their questions about the night sky--and far
more--in these 50 eye-opening activities. Three-hundred color photos and illustrations, some from NASA's magnificent collection, help kids soar out into the solar system, get their bearings among the stars, and see the size of Earth as compared to the neighboring planets. Youngsters will learn how to use binoculars and a telescope. To remember what they see up above, children can create a stargazing notebook to chart viewing highlights or take pictures of star trails. A photographic trip to the Moon will inspire kids to map its many phases, calculate their lunar weight, or find out what happens during an eclipse. Voyaging farther out also reveals why the other planets wouldn't make a good home for humans, and will help children understand why Earth is so very special, too.

Product Description
Opacity is a quantity which determines the transport of radiation through matter, and is important in many problems in physics and astronomy. To calculate opacities one requires atomic data for a large number of processes involving the absorption and scattering of radiation. Stellar opacities are of particular interest in astrophysics because of their importance for theories of stellar structure and stellar pulsations. Taking advantage of advances in computational atomic and plasma physics and of the availability of powerful supercomputers, a collaborative effort - the international Opacity Project - has been made to compute accurate atomic data required for opacity calculations. The work includes computation of energy levels, oscillator strengths, photoionisation cross sections and parameters for pressure broadening of spectral lines. Several different methods of computation have been used to calculate the same data thereby providing a check on the validity of the data. The Opacity Project Team is made up of 30 experts drawn from 13 leading laboratories and observatories in atomic physics and astrophysics in the USA, Europe and South America. The Project has been running since 1986.
The Opacity Project Volume 1 is the first of a two-volume reference work produced by the international Opacity Project. It is divided into two parts:
*Reprints of 31 key research papers elaborating the theoretical physical basis and computational methods used to produce the data. These papers provide essential background for researchers to understand how the data are produced.
*Tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for atoms and ions of the elements He to Si.
The Opacity Project Volume 2 is the second of a two-volume reference work produced by the international Opacity Project. It contains tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for the elements S, Ar, Ca and Fe. ... Read more

Product Description

This kid-friendly handbook investigates the solar system's inner workings, the tools used to gain information, and an array of astronomical phenomena. Through a time line of discoveries and important events, a comprehensive text, and numerous projects readers can build from household items, this resource provides up-to-date information about the realm beyond planet Earth. Starting with a discussion of the basic components—the sun, the planets, their moons and rings, meteors, asteroids, and comets—this handbook considers topics ranging from the demotion of Pluto to a space object to the greenhouse effect on Venus and the astronomical unit. Along with this exploration of the historical, contemporary, and future tools—such as the rockets and satellites used to gather data—and galaxies, nebulae, and pulsars found outside of the solar system, are instructions for creating a rubber-band powered Mars rover, using dry ice to simulate the tail of a comet, and models of various phenomena. A resources section provides references for additional information and projects about astronomy and the solar system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd read it before buying it, this book was a waste of money.
Having an interesting high-altitude ballooning and aerospace I figured that this book would be a good way to learn about some things I've not been exposed to yet.I'm generally a fan of the other books in the Projects for the Evil Genius series so I took a gamble that it would be interesting, engaging, and educational.

It is none of those things. In fact, it's waste of money.

Much of the book consists of "buy this product and read the manual" with a liberal spicing of "buy this kit, build it according to instructions, and use it" without any context, helpful tips, or other sources of information. This book is pretty thin on actual content and reads more like a catalog of someone's favorite gadgets without any helpful information.

Don't buy this book as it is a waste of paper.Somebody dropped the ball over at McGraw-Hill when they thought this book would be a good idea.A real disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Projects are impractical
Many projects mentioned here need additional and heavy investments. Most readers may not be owning such expensive commercial / scientific equipments needed to carry out the projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Evil yes, Genius no
This is an astonishingly horrible waste of paper.I love astronomy and I like some of the similar "Evil Genius" series.I appreciate the fact that this book was apparently written for the absolute beginner in mind. But it is dreadful.A typical "project" involves buying an expensive piece of equipment, and then simply being told to use it. (Eg Project 10.) Project 15, supposedly telling the reader how to launch a CCD camera on a model rocket, never even mentions how to install or activate the camera! Other "projects" simply restate the assembly instructions for a specific telescope or other piece of gear which already comes with instructions. Project 27 says, "Use a shortwave radio." Uh huh, for what, and what does it have to do with astronomy? Other projects show a few equations scribbled by hand, with the expectation the reader will figure out how to use them (and can read the poor handwriting.) I could almost think the whole book is a joke, it is so pathetic. This should be taken off the shelves. ... Read more

Small but very informative booklet on the Apollo test flights; good photos and illustrations as well

3-0 out of 5 stars Mini Guides
This mini guide was quite good for the size but limted as an overall product. Put together professionally as usual by Robert Godwin and contained a range of information not generally available elsewhere. Would have been better if it had more content and the photos and text were linked a little better

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Apollo Program
This book is a great start to get to know what the Apollo Moon Program was all about. It's info-packed with drawings/illustrations and photographs. If anyone you know has ever wanted to learn about astronomy, or if you know of a teen who is taking astronomy in high school, this is the perfect book for them.It not only explains the facts in plain English, it alsohas plenty of jokes, cartoons, puns, and attitude to suit anyone. You'llactually enjoy reading this, and it will be a book you'll want to read andre-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information and practical projects on astromony for 8-12 yrs
As an elementary school librarian I see many astronomy books. This is one of the best.It has everything I look for in a good non-fiction book as well as child appeal. It gives information on different topics in astronomy and has practical projects for kids to make or do. The kid's projects expand their understanding of the scientific content and are not too difficult to do. The page format is "browser friendly" with boxed facts, space photographs mixed with drawings, and plenty of white space between the lines.Including real kids of multi-ethnic backgrounds helps draw our students into wanting to do the projects. ... Excerpt: Galaxy Zoo is an online astronomy project which invites members of the public to assist in classifying over sixty million galaxies. It is an example of citizen science as it enlists the help of members of the public to help in scientific research. An improved versionGalaxy Zoo 2went live on 17 February 2009. The project is inspired by Stardust@home, where the public was asked by NASA to search images obtained from a mission to a comet for interstellar dust impacts. Galaxy Zoo is a collaboration between researchers at many institutions, including Oxford University, Portsmouth University, Nottingham University, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, University of California, Berkeley and Fingerprint Digital Media, Belfast. Computer programs have been unable to reliably classify the galaxies. According to a member of the team behind the project, Kevin Schawinski, "The human brain is actually much better than a computer at these pattern-recognition tasks."Without human volunteers, it would take researchers years to process the photographs, but it is estimated that with as few as 10,000 to 20,000 people giving up time to classify the galaxies, the process could be complete in one month. No knowledge of astronomy is required. In the site's tutorial, would-be volunteers are shown spirals, ellipticals etc., and can try guessing before being shown the correct answer. Also shown are pictures of stars and satellite trails, which the robot telescope would have recorded without being able to classify them. Volunteers are then tested on some additional pictures and signed up if they get a reasonable number of correct results.
