Excerpt: The HinduGerman Conspiracy was a series of plans formulated between 1914 and 1917 to initiate a Pan-Indian rebellion against the British Raj during World War I. The conspirators included radical nationalists in India, the Ghadar Party in the United States and the Indian independence committee in Germany. The conspiracy was drawn up at the beginning of the war, and was extensively supported by Irish republican movement, the German Foreign Office and the German consulate in San Francisco, as well as some help from Ottoman Turkey. The most prominent plan attempted to foment unrest and trigger a Pan-Indian mutiny in the British Indian Army from Punjab to Singapore. This plot was planned to be executed in February 1915 with the aim of overthrowing the Raj from the Indian subcontinent. The February mutiny was ultimately thwarted when British intelligence infiltrated the Ghadarite movement, arresting key figures. Mutinies in smaller units and garrisons within India were also crushed. Other related events include the 1915 Singapore Mutiny, the Annie Larsen arms plot, the Jugantar-German plot, the German mission to Kabul, the mutiny of the Connaught Rangers in India, as well as, by some accounts, the Black Tom explosion in 1916. Parts of the conspiracy included efforts to subvert the British Indian Army in the Middle-Eastern theatre of World War I. The Indo-Irish-German alliance and the conspiracy were the target of a worldwide British intelligence effort, which was successful in preventing further attempts. American intelligence agencies arrested key figures in the aftermath of the Annie Larsen affair in 1917. The conspiracy resulted in the Lahore conspiracy case trials in India as w...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12750231 ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Asian-American Education: Historical Background and Current Realities fills a gap in the study of the social and historical experiences of Asians in U.S. schools. It is the first historical work to provide American readers with information about highly individual ethnic groups rather than viewing distinctly different groups as one vague, global entity such as "Asians." The people who populate each chapter are portrayed as active participants in their history rather than as passive victims of their culture.

Each of the twelve country-specific chapters begins with a description of the kind of education received in the home country, including how widely available it was, how equal or unequal the society was, and what were the circumstances under which the emigration of children from the country occurred. The latter part of each of these chapters deals with the education these children have received in the United States. Throughout the book, instead of dwelling on a relatively narrow range of children who perform spectacularly well, the author tries to discover the educational situation typical among average students. The order of chapters is roughly chronological in terms of when the first sizable numbers of immigrants came from a specific country.

Product Description
As a 2004 Clarion Award Winner, "Voices of Healing: Spirit and Unity After 9/11 in the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community" is the first publication revealing the under-documented experience of Asian Pacific Americans on September 11 and in its aftermath. The book is a collection of moving stories of loss, survival and bravery; of poignant photographs and artworks; and of uplifting letters and poems from these communities. In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, close to 8,000 residents of New York’s Chinatown found themselves displaced, without work and without relief efforts to assist them. South Asian Americans, Sikh Americans, and Muslim Americans suffered backlash in public places because they were perceived as foreigners. Despite these challenges, communities found strength and stood together to help the ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts. With over 100 full-color photographs, Voices of Healing is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and a tribute to the nation for renewed faith, healing and unity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and impressive tribute
A project specially assembled and presented by the Organization of Chinese Americans, Voices Of Healing: Spirit And Unity After 9/11 In The Asian American And Pacific Islander Community is a profound and impressive tribute to those who perished in the September 11th attacks, including civilians, firefighters, police officers, and emergency rescue workers. Color photography, history, testimonials, and a moving observation of how the attacks and their aftermath changed America forever, as well as the up swell of strength and community that came in response to help the victims and survivors, distinguish this moving memorial account. Most pages have a sidebar flap that can be lifted to reveal an additional piece of insight. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A view of the extensive aftermath of 9/11 in people's lives
"Voices of Healing" takes a look at the experiences of the Asian American community in the light of September 11 and its aftermath.Through a series of interviews it tells the story of real people and their loss, survival, and life changes as a result of the attack. The people interviewed include nurses, firefighters, police officers, people who lost a loved one, those who cried with someone who did, and those who were caught in the economic aftermath.

New York's Chinatown district was devastated by the loss of jobs as travel to New York came almost to a standstill.Businesses closed, people lost their jobs, and the whole area suffered. While this is true of the majority of New York, the Asian American/Pacific Islander community provides a good microcosm view of the situation.Through these interviews Icy Smith brings these people to life so the reader comes to know that these are not just anonymous individuals but real people with families, friends, and real lives that interact with many others in much the same way that all of us do.It also points to the solidarity of this community, as the struggles of a few become the struggles of the many.

The book finishes with interviews from Muslim and Sikh Americans as they call for tolerance and understanding."Voices of Healing" is an interesting read that does an excellent job of presenting the plight of the people through personal interviews. ... Read more
