2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Prints
These cheap reproductions only give the faintest indication that Rembrandt was aa genius with a pen and ink. Here his line work is reduced to mush and the washes are all grayed away into a uniform dullness. This is a very disappointing book. There may be some point to publishing a cheap edition, but in my opinion Dover would be better served by putting out a book with real quality rather than these bad prints. ... Product Description
*An intriguing look at an important model of Rembrandt van Rijn

About half of the work Rembrandt did in Leiden, the Netherlands, consisted of paintings, etchings and drawings showing older people. In these works an old woman is frequently portrayed who has traditionally been thought to be Rembrandt's mother, Neeltje.Whether Rembrandt really depicted her or whether this is a myth which has persisted for centuries is still not clear. This book discusses the creation of this myth which, although not firmly based on facts, has been an essential part of Rembrandtís image for centuries.

The works for which Rembrandt's mother was the model and which are reproduced in this book give an idea of the young artistís iconographic interests. For instance, Rembrandt depicted her as a prophetess, attentively reading a book. Sometimes she plays an active role in religious or allegorical pictures. A similar model can also be recognized in paintings by Rembrandt's friend Jan Lievens and his first pupil Gerrit Dou.

By showing the paintings of these young masters, the book examines their artistic relationships. It also offers a unique opportunity to compare early, closely related works and to gain a clearer picture of the collaboration among these artists. ... Read more

Product Description

Willem Drost (1633–1659) was one of Rembrandt’s most gifted pupils, and he is also considered one of the most mysterious. This book, the first ever devoted to this exceptional artist, unravels many of the mysteries of Drost’s life and career. Curator and art historian Jonathan Bikker offers not only new archival evidence of the artist’s date and place of death, but also a new assessment of Drost’s place in the Rembrandt workshop and in the Venetian art world of the mid-seventeenth century. Drost emerges as one of Rembrandt’s most talented imitators and, despite his short career, an artist with a variety of faces.
The book features a meticulously researched and fully illustrated catalogue raisonné with 38 paintings now attributed to Drost (several formerly attributed to Rembrandt) and 35 other paintings today known only from old sale catalogues or reproductions. The author also discusses 32 paintings he rejects as Drost’s work.

Product Description
In recent decades, a major change has taken place in the appraisal of Rembrandt and his work and impact. Modern scholars have rejected scores of paintings which were previously regarded as masterpieces by the genius Rembrandt and which dazzled the world for centuries. Many of these pictures are now said to be studio pieces or the work of obscure or anonymous pupils, while paintings that were once admired as vivid depictions of daily life have been interpreted as biblical scenes. This book presents the first critical review of recent conclusions about Rembrandt’s œuvre, many of which have proved unfounded. It also reveals that his work has always inspired legends and myths as well as convoluted interpretations. One of the aims of the book is to extract the kernels of truth from both the old and the new mythologies.Rembrandt’s art can only be fully understood when viewed in the context of his impact. For this reason Rembrandt – A Genius and His Impact includes small monographs on the master’s most gifted pupils and followers, represented here by the best works they produced. Separate chapters are devoted to drawings and etchings, which form an integral part of Rembrandt’s œuvre. The book examines the latest research techniques and the most recent insights and discoveries in this field. ... Read more

Product Description
During his life, Rembrandt painted four group portraits, all of which became world famous. However, the greater part of the work survivedand can also be seen in this richly illustrated, compact publication.

In the Seventeenth Century a guild or a corps would often commission a group portrait. At that time the Netherlands was at the height of its prosperity, and it added to a person's status to be a member of a guild or corps. An important Dutchman like Frans Banning Cocq or Nicolaes Tulip could gain even more prestige by having a portrait painted of himself in the midst of the group to which he belonged- for instance by an artist like Rembrandt, who was famous even then.Because of his exceptional working method, these paintings are not only splendid portraits, but also magnificent historical depiction's of the guilds and corps of the seventeenth century.

Everybody knows The Night Watch,The Syndics of the Drapers' Guild and The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Joan Deyman, were lost in a fire in the Eighteenth Century.

Rembrandt's Group Portraits shows all these well known works and also devotes attention to Rembrandt's working method in comparison with that of his contemporaries, and the creation of his group portraits. With the Rembrandt year coming up, this is a must for all enthusiasts! ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a close examination of one of the earliest of the more than seventy self-portraits in painting, drawing, and print that Rembrandt produced. Painted around 1629, it depicts a young artist in his twenties, in gorget and cap.The phrase "Rembrandt self-portrait" instantly conjures up an image of a world-weary, ruddy-cheeked man, donning a floppy hat and gazing at us benignly while alert to the source of his next guilder. By stark contrast, the Clowes Rembrandt portrays a soft-whiskered youth with a surprised expression, open mouth, and dashing military garb. The spontaneity of this image sets it apart from much else in Rembrandt's oeuvre. Stephanie S. Dickey's penetrating study of the Clowes Rembrandt is a model of acute observation and rigorous research. By retracing the place of this work in Rembrandt's canon, Dutch society in the early 17th century, the genre of self-portraiture, and pertinent iconographical traditions, she allow us to approach a work familiar to many with fresh eyes. ... Product Description
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), one of the greatest artists in European history, was at the forefront of the Dutch Golden Age. His talent was multifaceted: not only a gifted portrait and landscape painter, he was also an inspired draftsman and printmaker. This gorgeously illustrated book pays tribute to Rembrandt's marvelous gifts as a graphic artist and offers a unique glimpse into his life and creative processes through fifty drawings from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and the British Museum.
Rembrandt's perceptive understanding of the human condition is evident in portraits of himself and his contemporaries. Beginning with the portraiture, the author examines the artist's other favorite themes--from mythological subjects to landscapes--and explores the artist's drawing and printmaking techniques. This book is a perfect introduction to the graphic work of this seventeenth-century master. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy of Excellence

I'm very surprised that this book has no reviews.I'm reading it in preparation for a trip to Amsterdam. It is a wonderful, wonderful book.

We don't know a lot about Rembrandt or his life, but Lee quilts the pieces together in a delightful narrative which seamlessly knits together the historical record with speculation. It also sets the stage for analysis of his masterpieces: if you didn't really "get" Nightwatch before, Lee tells you why it was like a bolt of lightning. Also, Lee exposes the dark side of the art world (finance) in the historical setting of Holland in the 17th century.

Prior to this book, I knew a little bit about art, but nothing about Rembrandt. Now, I am very much looking forward to the museums in Amsterdam. Moreover, the tone of the book has that magical quality of being intelligent and witty at just the right places. I rarely laugh out loud when reading, but Lee cracked me up to the point of wanting to have dinner with him (Lee) and/or sending him money over top the price of the book.

Perhaps I could do a portrait for him?A flattering, 3/4-length piece at the reasonable sum of 600 guilders?

Product Description
Ternar draws upon the turbulent history of Sephardic Jews in 17th century Amsterdam, the artistic preoccupations of the elderly Rembrandt, and the controversial convictions of the false messiah, Sabbatai Sevi of Smyrna to create an entrancing tale. The central character of the novel, Samuel, is the man with his back to the viewer at the centre of a Rembrandt etching which depicts a group of Jewish men conversing in front of a synagogue. Ternar gives this man a face and a life history.

Rembrandt's Model challenges the prevalent assumptions about Ottoman and Western European cultures, and imaginatively suggests how the Wandering Jew-whether travelling in real life, in an etching, or in a dream-was crucial to the spiritual identity of both cultures. The mystery and wonder of Ternar's novel envelops us as we travel over time and place with Samuel-spanning the centuries to the present day, from Spain, to Amsterdam, and then to Istanbul. ...
