Product Description

Many people have written about how theory (or research) relates to practice; Jim is one of those rare professionals who live the relationship.

-Arthur Applebee

NAEP advisor,

Validation committee member for Common Core,

Author of Curriculum as Conversation

Why a book about questions? "Because when students' instruction is organized around meaningful, clear questions," writes Jim Burke in What's the Big Idea? "they understand better, remember longer, and engage much more deeply and for greater periods of time."

>>> Listen to a podcast where Jim explains how How big questions can engage and motivate students who have grown up digitally.

>>> Listen to a podcast where Jim explains how big questions can help you integrate standards, differentiation, and engagement.

>>> Watch a video message from Jim about the book.

Jim shows how making essential questions the center of your teaching can ease the tension between good teaching and teaching to the test while giving students dependable, transferable tools for reading, writing, thinking, and participating in the real world. Going in depth on his own units for frequently taught books, Jim shows how to plan lessons, units, and even entire courses around big ideas to help students:

  • grapple with content and deepen comprehension through reading, writing, and discussion
  • make learning stick by connecting it to texts, to students' experiences, and to the world
  • clarify and extend their thinking by learning which questions to ask and when
  • improve school and test performance by honing academic language and skills.

"Although no one thing can ever be the solution to all problems," Jim writes, "this book demonstrates the ways in which questions can address your concerns and develop in our students the mental acuity and fluency necessary to succeed in school and at work, as well as to achieve a sense of purpose in their personal lives." The only question now is, Are you ready to change your students' learning and lives?

3-0 out of 5 stars almost too specific
This book paints a very engaging picture of Jim Burke's AP classroom.It's what I call a "neat ideas" book.It's packed with "neat ideas":activities that sound engaging and valuable and intellectual. I could print out the handouts and use them in my class very easily.(If I taught AP English)

It doesn't, however, teach me enough to design my own curriculum or thoughtfully use questioning in my own classroom context.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important addition to any education collection
WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA? QUESTION-DRIVEN UNITS TO MOTIVATE READING, WRITING, AND THINKING shows how planning around questions gives students tools to understand content, deepen comprehension, and clarify thinking. Teachers will appreciate this narrowed focus on the role of question-and-answer in the learning process, and will find this an important addition to any education collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for English Teachers
Here are lessons and advice based on successful experiences with a wide range of Jim Burke's students, all based on the concept of using inquiry as the foundation of units, lessons, and learning.

Jim draws on and makes connections with many of the best contemporary thinkers as he provides the theoretical bases for his chapters. Although many of the lessons deal with specific texts, they are easily adaptable to any works a teacher might be using in class.

This important book is supported by superb graphics, online access to handouts and organizers, and useful appendices.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's the Big Idea
Look beyond the title. That's my advice for anyone thinking about purchasing this book. I bought the book out of respect for its author, an extraordinarily thoughtful teacher who has contributed much to the teaching profession.

What is especially valuable about What's the Big Idea is not just the "big ideas"--or guiding questions of the book's title. While questions may help a teacher structure a lesson, the book moves beyond being merely an application of the essential questions pedagogy. The book presents many practical ideas for structuring and sustaining deep levels of student inquiry into whatever the subject of study. And that is the book's grandness--wonderful lessons that help teachers create conditions of deep engagement that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls flow.

In addition to the materials in the book itself, there are helpful links from the book to parallel resources on the publisher's website that make the printing of clear copies of handouts easier.

There are books out there that attempt to frame teaching and learning through one narrow theory or approach. What's the Big Idea is different. In it, Jim Burke tells a wonderful story, a story informed by years of teaching, supported by research, and immersed within the individual journeys of his students to explore, learn, and discover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Idea Review
Another great Jim Burke book for secondary ELA who want to create flow in the classroom. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars For those who can't DRAW
Take a load of old t shirts, dip them in paint and throw them at a canvas. Roll your car over the canvas several times.

Tear up some cardboard boxes, spill paint onto the torn pieces and press into a canvas. Use random colors as well. Blindfold yourself.

Stand on a ladder and drip paint onto paper or canvas lying on the floor. Throw feathers and macaroni into the drips.

Using a squirt gun filled with paint, stand back and "create" your painting by squirting it on. Rub your naked body into the wet paint. Dance in it.

THIS IS A BOOK FOR THOSE AFRAID TO DRAW OR PAINT. AFTER ALL, WALKING ON A CANVAS WITH PAINTED SHOES CAN BE "FUN" THEY SAY. WHO KNOWS, MAYBE LEARNING TO DRAW FROM NATURE IS JUST OLD-FASHIONED AND NOT WORTH THE EFFORT? I DOUBT THAT TO BE TRUE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for those doing abstract in watercolor
This is not your average watercolor book. It was recommended to me by an artist of some repute, who uses the principles to paint non-abstract, but very expressionistic watercolors.

Somewhere in the examples of various artists' works, you might find something to stimulate your own sense of the abstract. There are exercises to free up the imagination and use different ways of looking at composition or watercolor media to express new ideas. Not for those looking to do ultra-realism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antidote for cliches
I find this book a superb counter to the myriad watercolor books on the market. There is nothing wrong with the realistic painting those books encourage and teach, but the medium offers much more and this book opens up those other vistas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for starting a watercolor painting.
If your looking for different compositions to try out in watercolor, this books fits the bill.

I liked the great descriptions of compositional techniques which is followed by large color painting examples.

Some ofthe painting examples scream for you to do them better. What a challenge! ... Read more

Product Description

Encompassing reading, writing, speaking and listening, viewing and representing, this collection of classroom-tested activities is the perfect complement to instruction. The activities motivate students and make them more fully engaged in their learning.

Each goal-driven lesson helps students develop their skills, while an accompanying sidebar scenario places the activity in a classroom setting. The lessons demonstrate how to break down, analyze, and critique information, as well as draw conclusions and improve comprehension.

This practical resource book recognizes that students who fail to reach their potential usually do so because they do not have the strategies they need to help them succeed. Teachers will find a repertoire of effective learning approaches that will improve student performance grouped around key themes that include:

  • promoting close attention to text;
  • responding to reading;
  • exploring vocabulary;
  • using exemplars and rubrics;
  • improving expository writing;
  • finding a writing voice;
  • benefiting from oral interpretation;
  • viewing media critically.

Product Description

What readers will love about this book is that it offers big-picture understandings of teaching, then it zooms in and offers the details of that teaching.
- Katie Wood Ray, author of About the Authors

First graders have no shortage of ideas. The hard part for them is putting thoughts together into a cohesive draft. Organizing and planning for writing defy simple description and aren't easily modeled for students, making them challenging topics to convey to young children. Where do you find the language and tactics to teach these subtle processes?

With First Grade Writers, Stephanie Parsons will change how you think about teaching the thinking behind writing. Parsons outlines five specific units of study for your writing workshop that help students prepare thoughtfully to write. Beginning with a September unit specially designed to introduce the writing workshop to first graders and build a classroom community that supports risk taking and learning, each successive unit builds upon the previous one and fosters independence. By June your students will know how to plan for writing out loud and on paper, leading to elegant, well-structured pieces. The units also help children to differentiate the planning and organization needed to write:

  • fiction
  • personal narrative
  • nonfiction Q & A books
  • pattern books.
Best of all, First Grade Writers is corner-of-the-desk practical with concise, logically laid-out descriptions of how each unit of study operates, a variety of helpful tables, charts, and assessment diagnostics, as well as elaborations, teaching points for minilessons and conferences, troubleshooting tips, and month-by-month planning assistance.

If you're new to first grade, Stephanie Parsons will give you ideas for top-notch teaching that will be invaluable as you establish your first writing workshop. If you're a veteran, the units in First Grade Writers will augment your existing workshop and help your students clearly conceptualize what high-quality writing looks like. Either way, you'll help them write better by thinking about the thinking behind good writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for First Grade teachers
This is a helpful guide for First Grade teachers who want to incorporate the writing process into their classroom. The information is clear and well-organized and follows the flow of the school year.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential companion for teachers of First Grade Writers
Stephanie Parsons' book speaks directly to teachers. It explains the thinking behind a writing workshop - what we need to understand in order to set our own goals for our students and to plan and organise successful units of study. I love the way she has provided a consistent framework for the development of each unit of study; this so helps my own planning and then develops each part of the framework giving examples of possible teaching points. I have recommended this book to every First Grade teacher I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on Target

5-0 out of 5 stars All teachers should read this!
This book is excellent. It should be required reading for those getting their teaching credential, and for all current teachers. While it is designed for high school, many of the exercises work or can be adapted for middle school. Elementary school teachers should read it as well. They need to know what their students need later; plus, they can create their own spin for some fun activities in lower grades.
And this isn't just about speaking. It's about thinking critically (and expressing those thoughts). No classroom is complete without it.
