Product Description
& 220 color photos & 7 x 9.Step-by-step instructions illustrated with color photos.& Full-scale pattern World champion Bob Guge applies his artistry to a perennial favorite, the northern cardinal, in the latest in Stackpole's Carving & Painting series. Guge is one of an elite few who revolutionized the craft in the late 1970s, and he remains a strong influence today. He is best known for his miniatures and songbirds: A carving of northern cardinals won him his fourth world championship in 1991. Here is a detailed guide to every step in the process, from sketching the pattern onto a block of tupelo gum to painting and finishing the completed bird. Every skill and step is documented with multiple photos and explicit captions. These books work! Even beginning carvers rave about their clarity and thoroughness. Also includes background information and photos of the live bird. Curtis Badger is author of Stackpole's Bird Carving Basics and Fish Carving Basics series, as well as the three previous books in the Carving & Painting series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for carving any songbird.
I have never met Bob Guge but I have taken a woodcarving class taught by one of his students, Steve Schumacher in Nebraska. Steve taught us to carve meadowlarks using Guge's techniques. I entered mine in our county fair the following summer and won a first place blue ribbon. Then, just today at a woodcarving show in Sacramento I saw a meadowlark priced at $600 and it wasn't nearly as good as mine! (Okay, so maybe I'm just a wee bit prejudiced.) On the advice of my Nebraska teacher, I bought this book on how Bob Guge carves and paints a cardinal. Both my husband and I refer to it frequently because it covers basics that can we can also apply to birds other than cardinals. Guge's book covers painting in great detail, it shows how to prime your bird and then to use multiple layers of acrylic washes to build up your color. My husband got so interested in cardinals after reading this book that he has now carved two cardinals and has learned to make bird legs and feet rather than buying the pewter ones. This book is well worth your money! ... Read more

Product Description
Following the tremendous success of his first book, Tom Wolfe now offers his most popular wood-carving with step-by-step instructions. Tom attributes the popularity of his Pig Pickin' carving to nostalgia. This work harkens people back to a simpler time, when the hog harvest was a community event. Everyone shared in the festivities...and the food. Tom makes the directions clear and each step is illustrated with a photograph. Because the book starts with the bandsawing of the pattern and continues through the painting, even a novice should be able to complete the project. At the same time, the seasoned carver will benefit from Tom's technique and expertise, and everyone will enjoy Tom's anecdotes about country life. ... Read more

Product Description
Working as a part time wood carver at the Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Larry Green often has the opportunity to demonstrate carving to visitors from around the nation. hardly a day goes by without at least one visitor asking, "Why carve shoes?" The main reason, according to Larry, is the challenge of transforming a block of wood into a boot or shoe, giving it a unique design, character and personality. The shoes become works of art to which most people can relate. With step-by-step, color illustrated instructions, Larry gets the reader started on the "right foot." Five boot and shoe projects are described in detail, including a baby shoe, a work book, a cowboy boot, a "Storm" boot, and a ski boot. Product Description
Upland Game Bird Carving displays all the talent and creativity of Rosalyn Daisey and makes it available to other carvers. In easy to follow, step-by-step instructions and illustrations, the reader will be able to learn the methods of creating these fine and beautiful sculptures. Beginning with accurately detailed plans, the techniques of carving, texturing, painting and mounting are explained with exquisite photographs and drawings. The book includes five carving projects. The male mourning dove is a particularly fun project, not only because the bird has opened wings but also because it is lighted from within the branch of the piece. Its base is a sculpted shadow of the bird in flight. A perched dove, a female, is one of Rosalyn's favorites because of the elegance of the dove itself. The complexity of the female woodcock project is balanced with the simplistic cuteness of the chick project. And the challenging bobwhite quail is intriguing because of its interesting feather patterns. The illustrations, carving directions and explanations, and the photographs are five conclusive seminars in tangible form. The complete instructions will lead the reader through all five Upland Game Bird Carving projects. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This book isn't much help to Noah's Ark carvers...
Twice I've been suckered in by the "Carving Noah's Ark" titles on David Sabol's books. This one WON'T show you how to make an ark even though a most attractive one is shown on the cover. It also WON'T show you how to carve, or give you patterns for the moose, goats, swans, pelicans, otters or opossums shown on the cover. Sowhy did I give it three stars? Because it does give you great photos of how to carve onebaby puma, one male turkey and a kneeling Mrs. Noah. You also get line drawings of a baby rabbit, baby fox, baby racoon and a baby skunk that can be used as patterns. There are also color photos of the same baby animals, in different positions, that could be traced over and used as patterns. Hey, maybe these aren't supposed to be baby animals--maybe it's that Sabol intends these animals to be caricatures. At any rate they have really big heads. I've been carving animals for a Noah's Ark for a long, long time and I don't think that this is one of the best books on carving animals. If you want patterns and notes on how to carve more realistic animals with results you can be proud of, you'd be better off by buying the carving books by Mary Duke Guldan or Desiree Hajny. ...
