This curriculum covers a year of elementary art. Suggested projects are organized by time of year as well as general topics. The projects are truly artistic in nature, and teach the child about different artistic mediums, as opposed to being simple cut and paste exercises in following directions. Here is a quote from the introduction: "Vitally important: Study each child, his needs, his accomplishments, his abilities, his maturity. Aims: (1) Art Fundamentals: To give the young child a well-planned course through the first nine/ten months of school that allows for him to enjoy art and to be creative as well as to learn some fundamentals (without talking too much about them) so that he will have, for his age, a good basic drawing, painting, crayola, and paper sculpture experience. HE never need wonder what to paint!Without talking too much about form and color, children can be made aware of it very early. The same is true of comparative sizes and shapes, as well as the relationship of one line to another.(2) Neatness: To teach children neatness in drawing, to be accurate and careful when using scissors, to paste neatly.(3) Creativeness: By motivating children through interesting discussions of their experiences, and by adding to these, they can then build on them and be very original and creative.In many projects they can be taken so far by direction, and from there on they may go forward with their own ideas and many interesting, original and varied results will be achieved.Remember: (1) Try to find something good in each work.(2) No two will be alike.(3) Some may go much farther than others, because they are more observant and have had more experiences to draw or build upon.(4) Always allow plenty of periods during each month for freedom of expression in every media made available to them.
