Product Description
This book combines Men-at-Arms 342: ‘The US Army in World War II (I) The Pacific’, Men-at-Arms 347: ‘The US Army in World War II (2) The Mediterranean’ and Men-at-Arms 350: ‘The US Army in World War II (3) North-West Europe’.When World War II broke out in September 1939 the US Army - starved of resources since 1919 - numbered just 174,000 men. By VJ-Day, 2 September 1945, a total of 8.3 million had served in an army which had risen to a stable strength of 91 divisions. This title explores the campaigns fought by the US Army in the Pacific, the Mediterranean and North West Europe. It covers the variety of uniforms worn, the equipment and weapons used and the organisation of the different units. Particularly interesting units such as mountain, Japanese-American and African-American troops, are also studied. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Guide to the uniforms and equipment of the US Armyin the Pacific, Mediterranean and North West Europe.
This is the Bind-Up of three tittles dedicated to the uniforms and equipment of the US Army in the Pacific, Mediterranean and North West Europe.(Part of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series, numbers, 342, 347, 350) each parts includes a campaign summary, organisation, combat uniforms, equipment, weapons and a divisional campaign service and shoulder patches.

There is a total of 24 color plates of uniforms by military illustrator Mike Chappell with many rare photographs, the text by Mark R. Henry contains a wealth of information of many not so know units, like the Nisei(100Bn) with 1500 strong, was formed mainly from Hawaiian National Guardsmen of Japanese-American descent, the African-American troops, the women's army auxiliary corps(WAAC)and medical services. For the famous Airborne and Rangers units little space has been devoted andfor the Air force you would have to look in other titles.

This is a good introducction guide for both modellers and others interested in history, in some parts the text is very brief but the Author tries to give us a detailed information about the Army's structure, I found interesting the notes on the equioment of Armored, Mechanised Cavalry and tank destroyer units well-researched, comprehensive, not the definete guide but highly readable introduction for the novice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and complete, in just 144 pages
Wanna know something about the US Army in the 2nd World War? Then look no further if time is critical. Like many of Osprey's products, this amalgamation of the three Men-at-Arms titles is a godsend to the modeler and wargamer and carries the day with Osprey's susccinct and no-fluff style! Bravo! ... While the most conspicuous components of the US Army Air Forces in World War II were the air units, there were also hundreds of ground units and organisations. Besides assigned military personnel the AAF also employed thousands of civilians. Many unique outfits were designed to meet the AAF's special needs. Uniformed civilians also possessed a variety of unique uniforms and insignia. These general issue and specific uniforms are the subject of this volume by one of Osprey's most experienced authors, Gordon L. Product Description
In April 2003, after a month of heavy bombardment, Baghdad fell under coalition forces' control. The forces established the Coalition Provisional Authority and in the heart of the city, an 8km square mile "Green Zone" was formed to maintain order until the new Iraqi government became a reality.

This title focuses on the lives of those soldiers whose task it was to bring stability to the area, primarily recounting the experiences of Task Force 1st Armored Division (TF 1AD) ("Old Ironsides"). The division's first operation, dubbed Iron Dig, was intended to verify the death of Saddam Hussein by finding his remains in a bombed restaurant in Baghdad. This was the first of many operations that combined combat and intelligence skills in attempts to capture or kill significant numbers of former regime leaders that were thought to be responsible for the remainder of attacks on coalition forces.

This unique theater of operations severely tested the troops on many levels, both personally and professionally, as not only did they have to deal with living and fighting in extremely high temperatures, poor standards of living, and little respite, but also their operations became the center stage of a controversial debate surrounding the occupation.

Discussed are the soldiers' personal experiences from recruitment, specialist training, and weaponry; to the aftermath and effects that the conflict had on them. The author, Ken Estes, uses interviews and recently declassified material to offer a full and accurate insight into this controversial theater of war. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nation Building Struggles
When I was ten and began building models of tanks from WW2, I wished I could afford an Osprey book based on the vehicle or the battles it fought. The illustrated publisher's quick histories, full-color artwork plates, maps and photographs are unique and entertaining. They, more often than not, provide a great entry point to a particular piece of history (though sometimes the authors have more passion than expertise).

This book largely covers the specific mission and actions of the 1st Armoured Division. It is an interesting look at the struggle to provide nation building versus pure combat deployment when combat situations abounded. As always the Osprey Warrior series covers training, equipment, and the campaign providing sufficient detail as introduction to the topic. It speaks in very supportive for what they accomplished given the range of opponents faced (some of this may be attributable to the fact that this was written in 2007 and overt questioning of the conflict was not as much in evidence).

I do worry about Osprey's format overall. They are pricey publications for their length and they need to rethink their offer in this digital world or may lose relevance.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an important guide for any who would understand the progress of U.S. military efforts in the region.

Product Description
No American military unit can claim as colorful and volatile a history as the 75th Ranger Regiment. From the French and Indian War of the 18th century when its guiding principles were first written down by Robert Rogers, to the most recent combat operations in Iraq, Rangers have led the way in America's wars for well over 300 years. Today's Army Rangers combine the rugged individualism of American frontiersmen with the finely-honed ability to operate as a close-knit team, wreaking havoc amongst enemy forces wherever they are deployed. This book portrays some of the most fearsome warriors of the most powerful army in the world.

The book has three parts: The Rise of the Rangers - Their origins through Vietnam; America's Small Wars - The modern Rangers in Iran, Grenada, Panama, Iraq and Somalia; The Global War on Terrorism - Afghanistan and Iraq. The post-Vietnam era occupies 75% of the narrative, which contains many dramatic first hand accounts of combat withfascinating supporting detail on doctrine, training, tactics and equipment.Appendices supply further information on regimental lineage, honors and citations, organization and equipment, medals awarded, regimental commanders, NCO roles and Ranger doctrine.

From the Ranger Creed
Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other Soldier....Never shall I fail my comrades.I will keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight; I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one hundred percent, and then some more.

From the reminiscences of the first commander of the modern 1st Battalion, 75th Regiment
'The things I remember; it'll be the Gold Medal Infantry of the world; they'll be able to do more with their hands and weapons than any other infantry unit in the world.Wherever they go they'll be recognised for their superior excellence. There will be no hooligans or bums in that organization...There will be a creed that they will develop, live by, train by, and fight by.'

From the Military Book Club
'From the first battles fought by Robert Rogers' Rangers in the mountains and swamps of upstate New York, to fierce battles in the blistering desert towns of Iraq, Shadow Warriors takes you for a 250-year tour with the Army Rangers. And what a tour it is!

...Honor the men who lead the way with this informative illustrated history.' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good one for your Ranger Bookshelf
As a Former Old Scroll 2nd Batt Ranger I found the book to be well written and I also happen to agree with the authors political slant. I actually read this several years ago and decided to pick it up again to see if my opinion changed. It has not...Rangers like any other specialized unit have allot of sacred cows and taboos. It was refreshing to see the author try to approach current Ranger Deployments and Combat Operations Honestly without the usual RA RA Ranger stuff. I also find it very interesting that Donald's Rumsfeld's DOD reviewed and approved the final draft of the book before it was published! I wonder if some of the other reviewers here took that into account....

5-0 out of 5 stars Author got it right
Reading the book several years after its publication the author is correct in holding Bush and Rumsfeld accountable for the mishandling of the current wars. Many generals and admirals have expressed the very same ideas put forth in this book and the author even quotes Marine General Riper who was one of the most vocal military officers at odds with Rumsfeld.

No matter what political affiliation, the stories about the rangers are excellent and well worth the read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wanted to like But very disappointed
I really wanted to like this book.Interesting information, the use of actual events to bring the history alive, and an easy writing style are all in its favor. But I can't get around the authors constant politicalization of events and decisions - esp. as he relates more modern history. It becomes VERY obvious that the author has a bias against certain people and their decisions (ok, we all do, that's fine) but when relating the chronology and facts about a battle or a fire fight that is not the place to beat the reader over the head with your views.Makes it difficult to keep reading - I've had the book for 6 months and have still not finished it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
As a former 2/75 Ranger I basically bought the book to find out about more recent missions and activities of the Regiment.I found the book to not be a history as much as a personal opinion of political decisions, the Regiment and the Army. Time and time again he uses his opinion as part of the history and uses "his experience" to speculate what might have happened.I expected a history but that is not what this is.I wish I hadn't of spent the money on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you are interested in the 75th Ranger Regiment, avoid this book
I am a Ranger currently serving in 2nd Batt at Ft. Lewis. This book is very poorly written, and is interjected with the political views of the auther (someone who could have used a ghost-writer). I appreciate Mir's service, but I wasted money on this book on my last deployment, introducing it to the burn pile rather than lugging it back home. It did do well on the fire, so if you want to shell out your money for bonfire fuel, be my guest. If you want accurate and well-written information on my beloved regiment, look elsewhere! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GI in WWII
Interesting book, completely illustrated, good reenacting photographs; I think it's a well done guide for USA WWII militaria collectors and reenactors.

4-0 out of 5 stars History and reenacting together
There are great color pictures of utility and wear of the gear. This book is best to buy together with the book : "G.I. COLLECTORS GUIDE: Army Service Forces Catalog: US Army European Theater of Operations".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on GIs of WWII
This book makes an excellant companion to GERMAN SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR TWO by Jean de Lagarde. Though it only covers ground forces it does so quite well.

A must have for anyone interested in WWII GIs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously Great Book
A MUST have for anyone interesting in WWII - from the casual history buff to the serious reenactor. The colour photographs breathe new life into the lives the men led, and give a much clearer picture of what they had to put up with (a LOT of those items were heavy and/or bulky), as well as the uses of their equipment. If you've ever had a question about 'how did they ever do _____?', then this is the book for you. From mud-spattered uniforms to the ubiquitous Lucky Strikes, this book will give you a view into the past... and in colour :)

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB RESEARCH MATERIAL!!!
Here is one superb research material for all collectors and modellers who are interested in American WW2 uniforms and equipment. Photographs are superb, clear, and sharp! Sure, the models are re-enactors, but they were posed and modeled realistically.

As an American WW2 militaria collector in the Philippines, where information does not abound as much as in the United States and other countries, I would say that this book lessened the burden of research and saved me a lot of time and effort.

I would highly recommend this reference material to all!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book by its Cover...
Don't be fooled by the date for this book. The actual copy right date is 1957. I was expecting a 2007 revised FM 21-76 BUT got deceived. Whoever put this NEW cover on this old book needs to be slapped. The information in the book is alright BUT not current! NOW... IF you want a revised FM 21-76... get the June 1992 edition. This copy has more modern information that most of us are looking for AND they have color pictures of plants and snakes. VERY NICE Survival book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with GOOD INFO..BUT!
This book is loaded with good info on LAND-NAV, but some of the printed examples in the book are very unclear, such as the chapter on using a protractor. It is very hard to see. Other than that, it is a helpful book.

3-0 out of 5 stars BEFORE You Spend Money To Learn Map & Compass Techniques......
I've encountered several books on map & compass usage only to be disappointed by the poor manner in which the subject was presented.

Before you spend money on the topic, I suggest you browse the following website which is so easy to understand that you might not ever want to spend money on another reference book regarding maps/compass work.

Its FREE..... and its totally user friendly. It even offers a list of characteristics to seek when purchasing a compass. (not all compasses are effectively safe to use in life threatening situations).

CompassDude (dot) com

I"m hoping that it is okay to post this information here. I am not the owner of the website & I derive no financial or other gain from it. I just recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the necessary map/compass information without being bamboozled into spending good money on an entire book when the website teaches you easily what you need to know.

1-0 out of 5 stars US Army Map Reading unfit book for Army let alone civilians
Book legibility very poor. That is the biggest complaint. How can a book be instructional when it can't be viewed. If the Army actually buys this book in this condition, fire the buyer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't make up false expectations about this book.

There is nothing special you will find in this book. There are no military secrets or better techniques. It is a very simple, easy to understand guide - covering the basic skills required for navigation.

After finding the text of this book on some global security website I felt really stupid having paid for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars not to learn from
Found this book confusing. Maps are illegible which makes the text irrelevant. It covers way too much detail all at once instead of progressing through steps. Covers alot of info and data useful only for those in the military. May work in conjunction with a lecture course, but by itself I would be surprised if anyone learned only from this book. I am new to this so maybe it's just not for beginners. ... Read more

Product Description
Tank destroyers were the US Army's response to blitzkrieg, and were based around the concept of mounting a large anti-tank gun on a light, fast moving vehicle. They served in the Mediterranean, Pacific, and North-West Europe theatres, and were also supplied to other Allied armies. These vehicles form an attractive modelling subject; their open turrets provide plenty of opportunity for detail work, as demonstrated here by the author in clear step-by-step instructions. Packed with tips and techniques from a leading modeller and Allied armour expert, this title covers the M10, M18, M36, and M39, and features modelling projects in 1/35th and 1/72nd scale. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for intermediate and experienced model builders
If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to building and finishing models, then tryModeling Realistic Tanks and Artillery: An Illustrated Guide, or picking up an issue of Fine Scale Modeler. I'm not shilling for Kalmbach Publishing, I simply think much of the material contained within these would appeal more to a novice.

I found much of this book in the Osprey Modeling series to be an excellent overviewof US tank destroyers of the period. Mr. Zaloga is a skilled scratch builder, modeler and painter, and many of the techniques he uses are clearly presented in the text, using different kits and scales, in three separate projects of varying degrees of difficulty and scales. Resin after market parts are utilized, as well as various painting techniques (a salt mask was used in one project, for example.) Avery useful paint color chip chart is included in the back. A comparison is given on the accuracy of kits available on the market, as well as a brief overview of what kits should be avoided due to inaccuracy and poor fit(very useful information.)

As I stated before, novice builders may become frustrated trying to use photo-etched brass, resin parts, and scratch built appendages for figures. Those looking for an easy step by step should look elsewhere, I found that this book and others in the series gave me many great ideas for my next projects, as well as some great information.

Product Description
US Army, DENTAL INSTRUMENT SETUPS, SUBCOURSE MD0503, EDITION 200, Survival Medical Manual

In order to obtain maximum benefit from professional capabilities of the Dental
Corps, a carefully organized dental service system providing technical and administrative support for professional personnel is necessary. Dental specialists and other auxillary personnel play very important roles in making this possible. A dental officer working with an efficient assistant can provide better and substantially more dental care than by working alone.

The subcourses in the Army correspondence course program for dental specialists
are not designed to turn out completely trained personnel. This can be accomplished only by close supervision while in an on-the-job status. The subcourses are designed to provide a review for personnel working in the dental area and provide the basic fundamentals and techniques for personnel interested in the auxiliary dental fields.

This subcourse presents a general discussion of the instruments, their use, and the
instrument setups used with the various procedures of dentistry, including basic
examination, anesthetic, restorative, surgical, periodontic, endodontic, and prosthodontic.

This subcourse consists of five lessons and two appendixes. The lessons and
appendixes are as follows:
Lesson 1, The Basic Examination and Anesthetic Instruments.
Lesson 2, Restorative Instruments.
Lesson 3, Surgical Instruments.
Lesson 4, Periodontic and Endodontic Instruments.
Lesson 5, Prosthodontic Instruments.
Appendix A, Typical Instrument Setups.
Appendix B, List of Instruments Used in Restorative Procedures. ... Read more

Product Description
US Army, COMBAT HEALTH SUPPORT IN STABILITY OPERATIONS AND SUPPORT OPERATIONS, FM 8-42, Survival Medical Manual

General
Although the Army’s primary focus is to fight and win our nations wars, it is often employed in stability and support operations. In stability and support operations, the Army executes missions in both peace and conflict: what combat does occur is limited to the minimum necessary to support the political objectives.

The primary recipients of combat service support (CSS) in stability and support operations are likely to be civilians (US or foreign), rather than US combat forces as in war. The CHS planner must be capable of
adapting traditional methods of health care delivery, leveraging technology, and establishing new procedures to meet the challenges presented.

Stability and Support Operations
a. Stability and support operations are conducted in the political-military environments of peace and conflict. In both, the role of the Armed Forces is to aid in the protection and promotion of national
objectives without resort to war. Conflict is distinguished from peace by the introduction of organized political violence. Yet, it is a situation that remains amenable to solution by political means with military
support. In peacetime, the Army prepares for war and effects deterrence by its demonstrated capabilities.

In addition, military resources are used in peacetime as a matter of economy in government. Stability and support operations can include--

• Noncombatant evacuation operations (NEO).
• Foreign humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
• Combatting terrorism (counterterrorism and antiterrorism [Appendix A]).
• Nation assistance.
• Security assistance.
• Support to counterdrug operations.
• Support to counterinsurgencies.
• Arms control and disarmament.
• Domestic support operations, to include domestic humanitarian assistance and emergency services.
• Peace operations.
• Support to insurgencies.
• Shows of force and demonstrations.
• Strikes and raids.

b. In stability and support operations, the provision of CHS and health education plays a more direct role in countering both the medical and general threats. Combat health support in stability and support operations can be defined as those actions encompassing all military health-related activities taken or programs established to further US national goals, objectives, and missions. These actions and programs
may differ to some degree from the traditional CHS role (delivery of quality health care) of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) in war. For example, these CHS operations can play a significant and proactive role in nation assistance by—

• Assisting with the development and refinement of the host-nation (HN) medical infrastructure.

• Providing and maintaining the basic necessities of life for the general population through HN civilian medical programs.

• Providing assistance in establishing, repairing, or improving basic health and sanitation services.

Product Description
US Army, Field Manual, FIRST AID , FM 4-25.11, 2002, Survival Medical Manual

This manual meets the first aid training needs of individual service
members. Because medical personnel will not always be readily available,
the nonmedical service members must rely heavily on their own skills and
knowledge of life-sustaining methods to survive on the integrated battlefield.
This publication outlines both self-aid and aid to other service members
(buddy aid). More importantly, it emphasizes prompt and effective action in
sustaining life and preventing or minimizing further suffering and disability.
First aid is the emergency care given to the sick, injured, or wounded before
being treated by medical personnel. The term first aid can be defined as
“urgent and immediate lifesaving and other measures, which can be
performed for casualties by nonmedical personnel when medical personnel
are not immediately available.” Nonmedical service members have received
basic first aid training and should remain skilled in the correct procedures for
giving first aid. This manual is directed to all service members. The
procedures discussed apply to all types of casualties and the measures
described are for use by both male and female service members. ... Read more
