5-0 out of 5 stars The Mystery in Arizona
ISBN 0307215334 - It's probably a bit of nostalgia that makes me give the book five stars: Trixie is a childhood favorite, and this title is the last written by series creator Julie Campbell. From here on, the books are written by various house authors under the name Kathryn Kenny.

Trixie and her friends have been invited to spend their Christmas holiday at a dude ranch in Arizona, owned by Di's uncle Monty. When they arrive, they're very nearly sent right back home because Uncle Monty is seriously under-staffed.Trixie, however, volunteers the entire group to fill in for the Orlandos, who mysteriously left their jobs without real explanation.Only Maria, an Orlando by marriage, and her son Petey, remain behind - and the things Petey says to Trixie has her convinced there's some sort of mystery to solve.Unhappy guests, a cowboy on the ranch and Rosita, a young girl working in housekeeping, all come with their own riddles and Trixie, of course, will solve them all.But can she do that and her job and still get in all the studying she's promised her mother?

The original copyright of 1958 is evident in the writing style, not to mention a few clues; the "No Smoking" sign on the plane and the comment "Got three teen-age kids whose friends practically lived at our house... until they got TV sets of their own" are giveaways.Campbell's style reminds me a great deal of The Boxcar Children series, set in a more innocent time. The greatest negative to the book is the feeling that you're being lectured on things like Arizona itself (16 pages of info on the state!), Indian customs and more.Still, I don't recall that bothering me when I was younger and I don't know that mystery fans will mind much now.A fun, bad-language-free mystery with the Bob-Whites. (Copyright, AnnaLovesBooks, 2008)

1-0 out of 5 stars Trixie Beldon and the mystery of the uninvited guest
For and assignment, I read this book. After the first twenty pages, I found that I wanted to, throw it away in a burn barrel and then burn that too.It was a predictable, poor exuse of a mystery novel. The only mystery here was why I chose it in the first place.

It had a bad setting,in the 40's or something, where everything was a mystery, including cereal. It was a predictable at every turn and easily solved for the reader less than halfway through. It was an unrealistic and fake sounding, let alone "looking" book.

In conclusion, I hated the stupid bundle of paper. It had the worst setting ever in any book in my displeasure to read from slimy cover to sticky end.And who in their right mind says "Gleeps"?That is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll REALY enjoy it!...
This book is one of my favorite because it takes place in my state. It takes place in Tucson,Arizona. Its kinda mysterious.
Petey, the cook's son keps on wanting to be with his family in
some sort of a cave.If you read this book i think you'll enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Arizona, watch out -- here comes Trixie!
Christmas at Uncle Monty's dude ranch in Arizona sounds like heaven to the Bob-Whites, until they find that the ranch may have to close when the family of Mexicans that keeps the place going mysteriously disappears.Who can Uncle Monty ever find to tidy the guest rooms, wash the mountains of dishes, and serve the dinners?Hmmmm ... On top of it all, Trixie has to bring her grades up before the midyear exams, so Brian and Jim tutor our distracted heroine. But throw in in the secrets of some unhappy guests and add the cook's little son Petey, who inexplicably wants to run away to join his Granddaddy in a surreal "cavelike place," and Trixie is in her sleuthing element. The book also slides in lots of Arizona and Mexican history and customs, so it gets points for being educational too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Trixie At Her Best
This book is a typical Trixie Belden mystery. It is well-written and entertaining. I enjoy following the happy adventures of Trixie and the other Bob-Whites as they travel all over the world, and this book about a trip to Arizona is one that I have read several times. It is a classic children's mystery! I would recommend this book for kids of all ages. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The lawman Doc Holliday?
This is a nicely illustrated little book (48 pages) targeting young readers. It is one in a 53-book series called, "Portrait of America," published by Steck-Vaughn, covering each state plus Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and Pacific Islands.

The book accomplishes what it probably was supposed to accomplish, that is, to provide a rough overview of Arizona, its history, its peoples, and its current status.

The only thing that jumped out at me is on page 15, where Thompson writes, "Lawmen such as Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Bat Masterson came to town around 1881."

This may be a minor point that only Western buffs would note, but Doc Holliday was definitely not a "lawman."Yes, he fought on the side of the Earps and was friends with Masterson, but he was never deputized, as far as I could find in his biographical materials.

So what?Who cares?Well, it just seems like someone writing a history should be a little more attentive to detail.Sliding over this detail may give readers a totally wrong impression about Doc Holliday.Compared to Earp and Masterson, he was really just a tubercular dentist, fast with a gun and handy with a knife (he killed several men), who loved to gamble.A very interesting personage, but not a lawman.

Anyway, that's the only part I can complain about.Otherwise, the little book was informative, and it made me want to avoid Arizona even more than I had before reading it (too hot, not enough water).Diximus.

4-0 out of 5 stars A history for Arizona
Beautiful deserts and hyper-modern cities. Arizona has a lot going for it, and this book will show you and your students what.

The "Portrait of America" series is a great and easy to understand introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Arizona" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. My only reservation is that the History section should have focused more attention on the ancient civilizations that flourished on the deserts over the centuries.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators. ... Read more
