Editorial Review Product Description The core of Volume 3 consists of lecture notes for seven sets of lectures Hilbert gave (often in collaboration with Bernays) on the foundations of mathematics between 1917 and 1926. These texts make possible for the first time a detailed reconstruction of the rapid development of Hilbert’s foundational thought during this period, and show the increasing dominance of the metamathematical perspective in his logical work: the emergence of modern mathematical logic; the explicit raising of questions of completeness, consistency and decidability for logical systems; the investigation of the relative strengths of various logical calculi; the birth and evolution of proof theory, and the parallel emergence of Hilbert’s finitist standpoint. The lecture notes are accompanied by numerous supplementary documents, both published and unpublished, including a complete version of Bernays’s Habilitationschrift of 1918, the text of the first edition of Hilbert and Ackermann’s Grundzüge der theoretischen Logik (1928), and several shorter lectures by Hilbert from the later 1920s. These documents, which provide the background to Hilbert and Bernays’s monumental Grundlagen der Mathematik (1934, 1938), are essential for understanding the development of modern mathematical logic, and for reconstructing the interactions between Hilbert, Bernays, Brouwer, and Weyl in the philosophy of mathematics. |

Editorial Review Product Description The papers in this volume examine the geometry of moduli spaces of curves with a function on them. The main players in Part 1 are the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb Q}$ of the algebraic numbers and its close relatives. By analyzing how $G_{\mathbb Q}$ acts on fundamental groups defined by Hurwitz moduli problems, the authors achieve a grand generalization of Serre's program from the 1960s. Papers in Part 2 apply $\theta$-functions and configuration spaces to the study of fundamental groups over positive characteristic fields. In this section, several authors use Grothendieck's famous lifting results to give extensions to wildly ramified covers. Properties of the fundamental groups have brought collaborations between geometers and group theorists. Several Part 3 papers investigate new versions of the genus 0 problem. In particular, this includes results severely limiting possible monodromy groups of sphere covers. Finally, Part 4 papers treat Deligne's theory of Tannakian categories and arithmetic versions of the Kodaira-Spencer map. This volume is geared toward graduate students and research mathematicians interested in arithmetic algebraic geometry. |

some basic material explained
Disappointing
Dated due to lack of material on modern encryption, still suitable for learning number theory
Good book, but if you have the money, there are better
This is a MUST BUY if you want to learn Number Theory! I found the chapter on quadratic residues(which includes the reciprocity law) to be especially well written. Thesection on computers and number theory is excelent as well. A concise andcoherent discussion of crytography and the RSA system is included here. The organization of the book's chapters is fantastic. Each chapter buildsup on results proven in the previous ones, showing well the connectionsbetween the different aspects of Number Theory. The exercises of the bookrange from simple to challenging, but are all accesible to someone willingto put effort into them. This would be an excelent source for learningnumber theory for mathematical competition purposes, such as the ASHME,AIME, USAMO, and even for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The bookcontains much more than what is needed for these competitions, but theolympiad/contest reader will benefit greatly from a study of Davenport'swork. The book can certainly be used for an undergraduate course inNumber Theory, though it might need supplementary materials, to cover asemester's worth of work. I know the book has been used in the past inprevious editions as the main text for Math 124: Number Theory at HarvardUniversity. I would also recommend this book to anyone interested inacquanting themselves with Number Theory. Awesome! There is simply noother word that describes The Higher Arithmetic. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description The modern theory of quadratic forms has connections with a broad spectrum of mathematical areas including number theory, geometry, and K-theory. This volume contains survey and research articles covering the range of connections among these topics. The survey articles bring readers up-to-date on research and open problems in representation theory of integral quadratic forms, the algebraic theory of finite square class fields, and developments in the theory of Witt groups of triangulated categories. The specialized articles present important developments in both the algebraic and arithmetic theory of quadratic forms, as well as connections to geometry and K-theory. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in various aspects of the theory of quadratic forms. |
