Good introduction, but skimps on the implementation choices
I came to this book with a background in SoA principles, real-life experience implementing dozens of web services over HTTP in Java (some lightweight, some using full object models in SOAP, some in SOAP with XML CLOBs, some REST-like) and I was looking for a practical survey of how to go about converting your developer's mindset of a typical Web Services/SoA setup into one that supports real EDA, and provides the flexibility required - that I've always noted has been lacking from the designs I have previously implemented. I don't really feel like I got this from this book. I felt like it too quickly eschewed commentary on the specific difficulties in implementing web services like the ones described, instead asserting that merely thinking in an EDA mindset (storing as much state in the message as possible, use pub-sub etc) was enough to ensure the long-term *ilities of your architecture, without really /demonstrating/ how this worked in practice. For example, I didn't really feel like the book covered principles of how to design your SOAP (or other) schemas in such a way to allow your event state models to change over time, whether to publish different "versions" of an event type to different messaging endpoints, how to handle events which can only be handled by one instance of a service (but need to have redundancy and load balancing) -- or other approaches to managing change in your event producers and consumers. I also felt like it accepted UDDI as the solution to service location without criticism; I'd at least expect some commentary on drawbacks or alternatives.

Many such practical concerns when choosing frameworks and the practical concerns with designing such systems seem to have been left as "implementation detail" despite the heavy focus on Governance in later sections making quite a lot of noise about the importance of standardisation and policy. What about the theory and best practice that should go into designing these policies?

Perhaps I was expecting too much from a relatively short book; I just felt that to separate itself from the many SoA books on the market required more detailed analysis (and I mean getting closer to implementation) of the best practice and implementation considerations (i.e. expanded "EDA core components" and "EDA patterns" sections.)

On the plus side, the book is written well, in a good style and generally makes good use of diagrams when necessary, and it's a good overview of the subject area. I found it enjoyable to read. I also agree with many of its conclusions, just was looking for more discussion of ways around the drawbacks to implementing EDA -- other than "make sure you have stakeholder buy in", as in the later sections. Given the "level" of roles the writers are in, perhaps I was expecting the wrong thing from this book in wanting more of a bridge to implementation by developers.

Any studying EDA needs this primer
Computer libraries catering to programmers will find much of interest in Event-Driven Architecture: How SOA Enables the Real-Time Enterprise. It covers all aspects of SOA operations, from defining terminology and showing how EDA can apply to common business programs to IT challenges in its implementation and how the EDA approach can help a range of issues. Any studying EDA needs this primer.

Vacuous Evangelism
I had hoped that this book would help me bridge the communications gap between event-driven systems architects like myself and architects that are primarily used to SOA.I also hoped it would help me to work with the our existing SOA infrastructure to realize the benefits of EDA on a wider enterprise level.My hopes were dashed.

The authors fail to inform us how SOA "enables" the "real-time enterprise".In fact they admit that SOA is not the best way to implement event-driven architectures.Worse, they fail to inform us how EDA can even be implemented on a SOA infrastructure.

The real thesis is that EDA is a valuable and overlooked architectural element.It has been overlooked due to the late emphasis on SOA with it's request-reply model.The authors note that many companies probably already have a SOA in place and promise to inform us how we can implement EDA on top of that.But they don't even try to do this.

The most promising chapter in this regard seems to be "The SOA-EDA Connection".But rather than connect anything the author's present yet another mostly evangelistic overview of EDA in the very beginning.It is noted that "Although simple in concept, the realities of bending the raw Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) Web services into a functioning EDA are quite challenging andcomplex".But no real information is given about how to solve this problem.The authors spend the rest of the chapter discussing how one should design and implement SOA; No mention of EDA or how one is to implement it using an existing SOA infrastructure.

SOA paradigm shift well explained...
This book caught my interest as I have often heard EDA term before and was very much intrigued by it. Just like an advent of event driven programming brought a landslide change in the level of flexibility and interactivity in desktop applications in 90s, this new architecture style promises the same for large scale enterprise systems. Yet, I had lots of questions as to practical challenges and paradigm shifts which such approach may require. This book not only clarified my question and doubts about feasibility of EDA at the enterprise level, it has lead me to discover many other interesting applications of this paradigm that now I am aspiring to try in my practice.
I would highly recommend this book to those who are looking to take their SOA architecture to the next level.

Turning Away
In A Landscape of Events, consisting of 13 essays written between 1984 and 1996, French thinker Paul Virilio examines the effects of modern technology on our societies and psyches.The exercise is frequently both enlightening and bleak.Consider, for instance, this passage: "...in giving more depth to the present `instant,' these new electromagnetic technologies will ruin us and literally kill us; television's so-called real instant only ever being that of the sudden disappearance of our immediate consciousness."Among the effects of these "new electromagnetic technologies" - essentially our digital "communication" tools - on humans, Virilio sees the atomization of cities, of communities of all sorts, with each person diverted into his or her own consumer-entertainment-lifestyle dreamworld.Here Heraclitus is kind enough to step onto Virilio's stage and elucidate matters with this remark: "The world is one and common to those who are awake, but everybody who is asleep turns away to his own."

On the debit side, Virilio's nimble prose style can often be too fast for its own good, with quick jumps à la Baudrillard that sometimes seem to leave thought behind.And when it comes to politics Virilio exhibits an unconcern bordering on naivete - looking, for instance, at impacts of the Gulf War and never venturing any thoughts about the curious situation in which a single country, the United States, arrogates to itself the right to decide for the world who will be bombed and who will be spared, who will live and who will die. ... Simply Outstanding
Kwinter's analysis is extraordinary. His method is fairly eclectic, however, as some would issue this as a detraction, he compensates by having a wonderful writing style and a copious amount of mastery of the concepts that he addresses. I have read several treatises on architecture from 'philosophers'(i.e., Foucault, the Sitiuationists, et al.), but what is novel here is a designer explaining the epistemological frame of reference in the edifice, or engendering from it. Furthermore, it is completely amazing to think of the ostensibly disparate entities of Futurist architecture, quantum mechanics and relativity and Kafka as all burgeoning within the same epochal stuctures. I did find it odd that the author did not address Lefevbre's space/time tomes and rhythmanalysis. Kwinter is worth reading, and I think this book will be written about for years to come. ... A superb starting point
As an architect, I found this book a fascinating launch pad for further research into the symbolism and mythologies that went in to the making of so much of the World's great architecture. As a primer, this book takes us from the mythic nature of ancient architectural symbolism through the memory theater of the middle ages and into the Jungian understanding of symbols and forms. I enjoyed the initiation into hidden truths concealed within buildings and now my travel plans are slowly converging with places descibed in ths book.

A good introduction.
But that's probably about the extent of what can really be said about it.I think this more-or-less meant to be a coffee table book as it contains a lot of photos.The author deals with the subject matter in a sort of superficial way that doesn't really delve too deep into the motives behind the use of certain principles - thankfully that subject matter can be found in other books.The one thing I took away from the book was merely an understanding that their were practices in many cultures around the world that dealt with putting the spiritual symbolically into their architecture. ... Rhowbotham has posited critical, thought provoking ideas for over a century now.In the UK, his work has contributed to the discourse, testing and expanding the limits of architecture through works such as this.In a library of precise instruments, Field Event/Field Space builds on the capacity to go beyond the limits and truely dream of what architecture could be...this is how architecture advances.

Pretentious but thought provoking opus
As a 'paper architect' Rhowbotham has the freedom to desert the real world, and certainly revels in doing just that in this provocative but ultimately dissatisfying book.Using images produced by his students, theauthor champions a way of thinking which probably has some merit.However,his use of language is so complex as to defeat comprehension much of thetime.Rhowbotham sees himself as a leader of the avant garde, but thisbook does little to advance his claim and is a missed opportunity for us tolearn about an obviously talented individual. ...
