From 1922 until 1972 it was the residence of Governor of Northern Ireland. The post of the Governor, who was the representative in Northern Ireland of the sovereign, was abolished in 1973. Hillsborough Castle, which is located in the village of Hillsborough, County Down, is not a true castle. It is a Georgian mansion built in the 18th century for the Hill family, Marquesses of Downshire, who owned it until 1922 when the sixth marquis sold the mansion and its grounds to the British government. By buying it the government solved a practical problem. Under the Government of Ireland Act, 1920 a new state called Northern Ireland had been created. Executive authority had been vested for both Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland in the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who was supposed to be one of two all-Ireland features (along with the Council of Ireland) in the new home rule structure. However that office was abolished in a law change following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which in effect abolished Southern Ireland (which had in reality only existed on paper) and replaced it with the Irish Free State. Burma (Myanmar) has a large hydroelectric power potential of 39,000 Megawatts (MW), although the economical exploitable potential is about 37,000 MW. Burma tripled its installed capacity of hydro plants, from 253 MW in 1990 to 745 MW in 2002. Total installed capacity in 2010 is at least 2,449 MW, 6% of potential. Several large dams are planned to increase future hydro utilization. Although the State of Burma is underdeveloped in terms of its hydro-power potential it is not for lack of trying. The federal representative was Herbert Hoover, then Secretary of Commerce under President Warren Harding. In January 1922, Hoover met with the state governors of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming to work out an equitable arrangement for apportioning the waters of the Colorado River for their states' use. The resulting Colorado River Compact, signed on November 24, 1922, split the river basin into upper and lower halves with the states within each region deciding how the water would be divided. ONLY THE SUN KING COULD AFFORD THIS BOOK
This book is a huge disappointment.When i picked it up at border's i assumed at that price it would be spectacular..it is not..it's an odd book with usual images and hard to follow text.I had wanted to see the book because you rarely hear anything about Marly, the kings favorite palace, if Louis liked you, he would invite you to Marly, it was spectacular and you do get a feel for it in this book, but not enough to pay this staggering price.It's a mediocre book, with a shocking sticker price...just buy the Montclos book on Versailles, now that's a GREAT book and well worth it's price.

Excellent overview of the many structures of Louis XIV!
This book covers many structures, commissioned by Louis XIV, that were either built or were designed but not executed. The pictures that the authors did themselves are spetacular! The text is also above average. I however must warn you it is not worth $135.00 which is the book's retail price. The book's length was a huge dissapointment. It is only 208 pages (not 224 as they say in the book description) which includes the table of contents, index, bibliography, etc. The authors did not fill the pages with as many illustrations and text as I would've liked.If I had it to do over again would not pay the retail price for this book. I would buy a used one instead. Overall though, despite its length, the book does provide the reader with an in-depth look at the exquisite architecture of the Sun King. ... Read more

HIGH MASONRY DAM DESIGN - 1910 - IT is the practice at Columbia University to require of the third-year students in the Department of Civil Engineering, the execution of the design of a masonry dam, and to aid them in this problem they have heretofore been furnished with Notes on the Theory and Design of High Masonry Dams, prepared some years ago by Prof. Burr of the e a r t m e natn, d having for their basis the method as set forth by Mr. Edward Wegmann. This procedure with which Wegmann is credited, and which was developed through the investigations undertaken in connection with the Aqueduct Commission of the city of New York, for the purpose of determining a correct cross-section for the Quaker Bridge dam, resulted in the first direct method for calculating the cross-section of such structures and is essentially a development of the Rankine theory. The studies appeared first in the report made by Mr. A. Fteley to the chief engineer of the Aqueduct Commission of the city of New York, dated July 25, 1887, and later in Mr. Wegmanns treatise on The Design and Construction of Dams. Neither in the report nor in the treatise however, have the effects of uplift, due to water permeating the mass of masonry, and of ice thrust, acting at the surface of the water in the reservoir, been bonsidered, and in consequence of this, objection might be legitimately raised that the series of equations determining the crosssection fails to account for these factors. Some difference of opinion may exist as to the relative importance of these considerations, but when a structure of great respbnsibility is projected, conservatism in design is essential. The following presentation which aims to supply these omissions, has been prepared primarily that there may be had in convenient form a text, containing the general treatment and such consideration of these factors as more recent practice requires, together with a brief statement regarding the late investigations undertaken for the purpose of determining more accurately the variation of stress in masonry dams. The formulz relating to uplift, ice thrust, etc., were deduced by one of the authors and have been used in part in connection with the design of the large dams for the new water supply for the city of New York. The computations for the design of a high masonry Clam are appended to facilitate the ready comprehension and application of the forrnulz. It is hoped that the presentation may appeal to the practicing engineer as well as the student, and that there may be found therein enough to compensate him for the labor involved in its perusal.
