Product Description
Dynamic programming is a powerful method for solving optimization problems, but has a number of drawbacks that limit its use to solving problems of very low dimension. To overcome these limitations, author Rein Luus suggested using it in an iterative fashion. Although this method required vast computer resources, modifications to his original scheme have made the computational procedure feasible. With iteration, dynamic programming becomes an effective optimization procedure for very high-dimensional optimal control problems and has demonstrated applicability to singular control problems. Recently, iterative dynamic programming (IDP)has been refined to handle inequality state constraints and noncontinuous functions.Iterative Dynamic Programming offers a comprehensive presentation of this powerful tool. It brings together the results of work carried out by the author and others - previously available only in scattered journal articles - along with the insight that led to its development. The author provides the necessary background, examines the effects of the parameters involved, and clearly illustrates IDP's advantages. ... Read more

Product Description
Singular Partial Differential Equations provides an analytical, constructive, and elementary approach to non-elementary problems. In the first monograph to consider such equations, the author investigates the solvability of partial differential equations and systems in a class of bounded functions with complex coefficients having singularities at the inner points or boundary of the domain. Using complex variable techniques, the author considers a variety of problems, including the Dirichlet, Neumann, and other problems for first order systems. He also explores applications to singular equations, degenerate, high-dimensional Beltrami systems in Cn,, and others. Singular Partial Differential Equations fills a gap in the literature on degenerate and singular partial differential equations and significantly contributes to the theory of boundary value problems for these equations and systems. It will undoubtedly stimulate further research in the field. Practical applications in analysis and physics make this important reading for researchers and students in physics and engineering, along with mathematicians. ... Read more

Product Description
A continuation of the authors’ previous book, Isometries on Banach Spaces: Vector-valued Function Spaces and Operator Spaces, Volume Two covers much of the work that has been done on characterizing isometries on various Banach spaces.

Picking up where the first volume left off, the book begins with a chapter on the Banach–Stone property. The authors consider the case where the isometry is from C0(Q, X) to C0(K, Y) so that the property involves pairs (X, Y) of spaces. The next chapter examines spaces X for which the isometries on LP(μ, X) can be described as a generalization of the form given by Lamperti in the scalar case. The book then studies isometries on direct sums of Banach and Hilbert spaces, isometries on spaces of matrices with a variety of norms, and isometries on Schatten classes. It subsequently highlights spaces on which the group of isometries is maximal or minimal. The final chapter addresses more peripheral topics, such as adjoint abelian operators and spectral isometries.

Essentially self-contained, this reference explores a fundamental aspect of Banach space theory. Suitable for both experts and newcomers to the field, it offers many references to provide solid coverage of the literature on isometries. ... Read more

Product Description

Filled with practical examples, Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems, Compressible Flows, and Waves presents a self-contained discussion of quasilinear hyperbolic equations and systems with applications. It emphasizes nonlinear theory and introduces some of the most active research in the field.

After linking continuum mechanics and quasilinear partial differential equations, the book discusses the scalar conservation laws and hyperbolic systems in two independent variables. Using the method of characteristics and singular surface theory, the author then presents the evolutionary behavior of weak and mild discontinuities in a quasilinear hyperbolic system. He also explains how to apply weakly nonlinear geometrical optics in nonequilibrium and stratified gas flows and demonstrates the power, generality, and elegance of group theoretic methods for solving Euler equations of gasdynamics involving shocks. The final chapter deals with the kinematics of a shock of arbitrary strength in three dimensions.

With a focus on physical applications, this text takes readers on a journey through this fascinating area of applied mathematics. It provides the essential mathematical concepts and techniques to understand the phenomena from a theoretical standpoint and to solve a variety of physical problems.

Product Description
With its important applications in a broad range of real-world problems, building a strong foundation in vector analysis is an essential part of the future engineer's education. Too often, however, the subject is treated only briefly in general calculus or engineering mathematics courses, and those treatments tend to be focused on theory rather than practical applications.Applied Vector Analysis richly illustrates the application of vector calculus to physical problems. The authors clearly explain the theory, but focus on its application with an abundance of worked practical examples and exercises drawn from fluid mechanics, electromagnetic theory, and Maxwell's wave and heat equations. Developed from class notes used over many years of teaching vector analysis, this book is an ideal text for a one-semester course for senior undergraduate or graduate engineering students. With its bibliography and convenient appendix of vector formula, Applied Vector Analysis will also provide a valuable reference for graduate students and professional engineers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfinished
This book is small, expensive and relatively bad. While there are plenty of errors to be annoyed by (everything from incorrect solutions to syntax errors in the mathematics), my main qualm with the book comes from the poorly motivated text. While the underlying structure is suitable, the overall exposition is crap. The text reads like lecture notes, and I don't think it is quite up to the standard of a textbook. The exercises also need some work; there should be more exercises that are more interesting. As a mathematics major I am not all too impressed with it, but a student of an applied science may like it more. Although in this form I don't think it is suitable for any audience.

If you want to learn Vector Calculus, I would suggest the multivariable/vector analysis sections of Stewart's Calculus text. That is where I learned the material. Vector Calculus by Marsden also seems promising, but I have not read it all yet. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite decades of research and progress in the theory of generalized solutions to first-order nonlinear partial differential equations, a gap between the local and the global theories remains: The Cauchy characteristic method yields the local theory of classical solutions. Historically, the global theory has principally depended on the vanishing viscosity method. The authors of this volume help bridge the gap between the local and global theories by using the characteristic method as a basis for setting a theoretical framework for the study of global generalized solutions. That is, they extend the smooth solutions obtained by the characteristic method. The authors offer material previously unpublished in book form, including treatments of the life span of classical solutions, the construction of singularities of generalized solutions, new existence and uniqueness theorems on minimax solutions, differential inequalities of Haar type and their application to the uniqueness of global, semi-classical solutions, and Hopf-type explicit formulas for global solutions. These subjects yield interesting relations between purely mathematical theory and the applications of first-order nonlinear PDEs.The Characteristic Method and Its Generalizations for First-Order Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations represents a comprehensive exposition of the authors' works over the last decade. The book is self-contained and assumes only basic measure theory, topology, and ordinary differential equations as prerequisites. With its innovative approach, new results, and many applications, it will prove valuable to mathematicians, physicists, and engineers and especially interesting to researchers in nonlinear PDEs, differential inequalities, multivalued analysis, differential games, and related topics in applied analysis. ... Product Description
Linear and nonlinear systems of equations are the basis for many, if not most, of the models of phenomena in science and engineering, and their efficient numerical solution is critical to progress in these areas. This is the first book to be published on nonlinear equations since the mid-1980s. Although it stresses recent developments in this area, such as Newton-Krylov methods, considerable material on linear equations has been incorporated. This book focuses on a small number of methods and treats them in depth. The author provides a complete analysis of the conjugate gradient and generalized minimum residual iterations as well as recent advances including Newton-Krylov methods, incorporation of inexactness and noise into the analysis, new proofs and implementations of Broyden's method, and globalization of inexact Newton methods. ... Product Description
The computational power currently available means that practitioners can find extremely accurate approximations to the solutions of more and more sophisticated mathematical models-providing they know the right analytical techniques. In relatively simple terms, this book describes a class of techniques that fulfill this need by providing closed-form solutions to many boundary value problems that arise in science and engineering. Boundary integral equation methods (BIEM's) have certain advantages over other procedures for solving such problems: BIEM's are powerful, applicable to a wide variety of situations, elegant, and ideal for numerical treatment. Certain fundamental constructs in BIEM's are also essential ingredients in boundary element methods, often used by scientists and engineers. However, BIEM's are also sometimes more difficult to use in plane cases than in their three-dimensional counterparts. Consequently, the full, detailed BIEM treatment of two-dimensional problems has been largely neglected in the literature-even when it is more than marginally different from that applied to the corresponding three-dimensional versions. This volume discusses three typical cases where such differences are clear: the Laplace equation (one unknown function), plane strain (two unknown functions), and the bending of plates with transverse shear deformation (three unknown functions). The author considers each of these with Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions. He subjects each to a thorough investigation-with respect to the existence and uniqueness of regular solutions-through several BIEM's. He proposes suitable generalizations of the concept of logarithmic capacity for plane strain and bending of plates, then uses these to identify contours where non-uniqueness may occur. In the final section, the author compares and contrasts the various solution representations, links them by means of boundary operators, and evaluates them for their suitability for numeric computation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great on many new insights... but where's chaos?
Let me start out by saying that the previous reviewer was not
refering to this book at all. If there's something this book
does NOT cover is "quantum level events in liquid forms". It
is true that the author, in the last two chapters, covers the
statistical mechanics of turbulent flow, but quantum mechanics
is "barely" mentioned (at least *I* couldn't find it).

This book was written, according to the author, with an
undergraduate level of engineering in mind, and therefore is
extremely accessible. Indeed, the first two chapters on the
ergodic foundations of statistical mechanics are extremely
easygoing (AND fairly rigorous). In chapter 3, particular
emphasis is put on low-dimensional systems, e.g. the
Henon-Heiles oscillators, and chains of oscillators, e.g. the
Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem. Both are shown to present statistical
behavior. After also spending a whole chapter with damped
systems, the author dedicates a long discussion on the stat
mech of turbulent flow in both 2- and 3-dimensions, which is
precisely his main subject of research.

In summary, it is actually a pretty neat book on ergodic
techniques for both low-dimensional systems and fluid motion,
and I strongly encourage you to buy it if you are interested
in either of these two subjects. The only reason I gave it 4
stars is, as the title suggests, because one could expect at
least *some* systematic discussion concerning "chaos" itself
and its relation to thermodynamics/statistical mechanics.
However, even elementary concepts such as Lyapunov instability,
KAM theorem and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy are barely mentioned.
