1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This is the message I sent the book seller: The Book is: Ant and Bee and the RainbowAnt and Bee and the Rainbow (Ant & Bee)
Dear Mary, I am not going to ask for my money back. I should have gotten more information about the printing company and location before my purchase. The $50.00 price led me to believe that the printing quality would have been original. I already have a copy that was printed in England. The book you sent me was printed in Hong Kong. The colors are not accurate. The color "red" in your book is almost orange. The color "violet" is truly brown. This is not just being picky: a book about colors should have the colors printed accurately. The poor printing of these two colors will give the child the wrong information. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED.
Sincerely, Rochelle

I too remember this book as a child in the 70s. My brother and I LOVED it. I didn't realize it was part of a series until I worked in a bookstore in London 3 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring this one back
I bet a publisher could make some money bringing this book back into general circulation.I remember Ant & Bee and the Rainbow vividly as a little kid during the mid 1960s, so it's been around a while.While the particulars of the story have faded over 40 years, I do remember the colors and the humor and maybe even the suspense bringing me back to look this one over again and again as a 2-4 year-old.I would love to get my hands on it for my own young children.If anyone has any tips on getting a copy, let me know.

I got my first Ant and Bee book for my son on a recommendation from a nursery school teacher from the Bank Street School.My son is not quite two years old, and already follows the pictures and words in these classic books with glee.And because they are just his size, in bright colors, he especially likes to carry them with him when we travel.He likes pointing out characters like the Zoo Man and the Kind Dog, and of course, Ant and Bee.Most interesting about these books is that the text itself is fun for children to look at.Key words are highlighted with varying fonts and colors, and sections are sprinkled with minature versions of pictures from larger illustrations.Ant and Bee and the Rainbow is about colors.The intrepid insect friends like rainbows so much, they decide to make one of their own by painting half an old tire propped up on the ground. Each book has its own special twist with familiar objects.I recommend the entire series.They are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 2007 Sydney Taylor Honor Award Winner for Older Readers
From simple stories, to valuable lessons, to an idea of what life was like in Rambam's time or how a holiday was celebrated in Russia, these folktales are brilliant in their simplicity.They can be read straight through, compared and contrasted, embellished upon, or edited for educational purposes.While younger readers may be daunted by the size of the book and the lack of pictures, they will enjoy being read these tales.While middle grade and juvenile readers may be put off by the idea of a folktale, they will find wisdom, humor and even intrigue in the stories.Adults will be enchanted by the brilliant ideas conveyed from these "simple" stories.REVIEWED BY KATHE PINCHUCK (BLOOMFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY - BLOOMFIELD, NJ)

5-0 out of 5 stars SOLOMON AND THE ANT: AND OTHER JEWISH FOLKTALES
Much heart has gone into the creation of this handsome book, where 43 gently humorous, Jewish teaching folktales call to be shared aloud.Selections include religious stories, fables, and wisdom, trickster, and riddle tales, warmly retold by the late Sheldon Oberman, of The Always Prayer Shawl fame, and lovingly wrapped with expert commentary by Peninnah Schram, who prepared the manuscript for publication at his request.Lively dialogue refreshes traditional favorites and introduces many new tales less likely to be found in other modern collections.Character resourcefulness abounds. A merchant tricks a farmer into returning stolen money by letting him think he will be able to steal more.A girl learns how to face a bully by first collecting three hairs from a frightening dog.A discontented man comes to accept his own problems when he sees what is happening in other houses.Maimon wins a poisoning contest without using any real poison at all.King Solomon learns humility from an ant. Stories, some given new settings, take place through time in Holland, Morocco, America, and England, as well as Eastern Europe and Biblical lands. Oberman's notes set historical context for the tales, and Schram's expand what a particular story reveals about Jewish traditions and values.Both generously slide in other stories and delectable tidbits.Classic origins for the tales, along with selected sources and variants and motifs, complete each entry.The book ends with a glossary and comprehensive bibliography of approximately one hundred folklore collections. There is so much here. Attracted by Lloyd Bloom's arresting jacket art, readers will want to stay. Highly recommended for ages 8 and up.Reviewed by Sharon Elswit

5-0 out of 5 stars The entire family can discuss and enjoy
Perfect for read-alouds by parents is Sheldon Oberman's retellings of Jewish folktales in Solomon And The Ant And Other Jewish Folktales. Peninnah Schram introduces and provides commentary to these rich stories of over forty religious, wisdom and puzzle tales, each of which demonstrates wisdom and understanding as King Solomon learns lessons from birds and ants, and other protagonists receive valued wisdom. While large print will lend to reading for those who already have skills, it's the read-aloud experience which is so highly recommended here: the entire family can discuss and enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the whole series!
We love these books!Bought several at once, and went back to buy the whole series!They are all so fun, and my son (3.5) loves
the fun facts and story line.At the end they go over the "parts" of whichever machine the book is about and he loves to talk about what
he remembers from the story.Love it, love it!!!!!Plus, the 3/4 creatures(characters) are precious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Busy Boats
Gift for great grand son. He seemed to enjoy it greatly. so did his Mother.

4-0 out of 5 stars boats hard at work
Busy Boats is a simple picture book with very few words per page. It tells about all sorts of trucks in the world. Each page has a picture of a boat with the job that it does. Each of the boats are operated by cute little cartoon like animals that caught the attention of my 2 year old sister. This book is really neat for boys and girls for all ages.

The pictures are very colorful. In back in has a page where it explains parts ofa boat if you are not familiar with some of the words used in the book.

I would recommend this book to children ages 4-7. Lots of kids like to read about boats and transportation.

5-0 out of 5 stars For your little mate & boat lover or future captain!
It's tough looking for a book that is about boats! My nephews birthday was fast approaching and I still hadn't found a book on boats until I happened upon this book! What I love about this book is that it's about all sorts of boats from dinghys to race boats the author Tony Mitton pretty much mentioned every type of boat that floats, except a Chinese Junk or a cannoe! Andhe some how managed to make each sentence rythm as well.The characters aren't too cutesty, so boys and girls should like this book a lot! There is lots of terrific information and on the last page has drawn pictures and a mini explaination for words like lighthouse, anchor, propeller, oars, deck, cabin, name and cargo.

To give you as small taste of this wonderfully written book - " A boat sits on the water like an empty bowl or cup. It's hollow and it's full of air, and that's what keeps it up." Pretty clever! ... Read more

Product Description
Ants that commonly invade homes, damage structures, inflict painful bites, or sting humans or their pets are considered pest ants. This illustrated identification guide highlights forty species of ants that pose difficulties in urban settings. Included are well-known invasive troublemakers such as the red imported fire ant and Argentine ant, as well as native species.

After an introductory chapter on the evolution, biology, and ecology of pest ants, the book follows a taxonomic arrangement by subfamily. Each subfamily chapter includes separate illustrated keys to both the genera and species of that group to enable entomologists and pest control professionals to identify pest ants correctly. The species accounts cover biology, distribution, and methods for excluding and/or removing ants from human structures and landscapes. The authors focus on the ants' biology and nesting behavior, life cycles, and feeding preferences; an intimate understanding of these factors enables the implementation of the least toxic control methods available.

A chapter on control principles and techniques encompasses chemical strategies, habitat and structural modifications, biological control, and integrated pest management methods. Urban Ants of North America and Europe also contains valuable information on the diagnosis and treatment of human reactions to ant stings and bites. This comprehensive reference work on these economically significant ants includes the scientific, English, French, Spanish, and German names for each species and a summary of invasive ant species in the United States and Europe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Qucik and Good
Book came as told it would. Good condition and in a timely fashion. Would order again. Highly recomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich, engaging, well-researched story of the ant universe
This was an incredibly enjoyable and interesting read. The author does a fantastic job presenting the foundational history of ant evolution and myrmecology, but takes it so much further by providing a rich and well researched story that brought me into the universe of the ant. I had no idea of the depth and breadth of this fascinating area of study and the similarly fascinating study of the super-organism.

This is a great companion to Deborah Gordon's book Ants at Work, where she shares her study of organizational systems through her research on harvester ants in the American Southwest. Both of these books demonstrate, to me, the connection between living systems and many of the organic, complex organizations many of us interact with, work in, or buy products from each day. Nature's method for overcoming the challenges of competition, innovation, communication, complexity, agency, and many other aspects we also face can't be too far from new answers that we can also explore.

I'm hooked. This and others I've read recently have me looking for the next book to devour on this or a similar topic and I'm excited to discover the connections with my role in building individual, team, and organizational capability. I'm confident I'll find them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable ant book
This is one of the best overviews of ants and the people that study them ever written. Hoyt's text is clear and very readable. His biographies of ant scientists are interesting and well worth the time invested in reading the book alone. It is his synethesis of the work that scientists do that makes this book so valuable. He takes the information that science derives and recreates the facination of the animals in the field in a way that is very accessible to the reader. My only wish would have been more illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go to the Ants!
Erich Hoyt has written a book, not just about army ants, leafcutter ants, fire ants, amazon ants and bullet ants, but about the nature of the social insects and how they fit into the world.From the ground to the trees to the canopy we learn about how the ants interact with other ants, other insects, other animals and even the trees themselves.From the jungle to the rest of the world, we learn about their history, their societies and maybe also learn a tad about ourselves.
Ants and mankind are social creatures who make wars.Ants and mankind also change their surroundings by building cities, roads and gardens.They raise livestock and communicate together, organizing thousands, sometimes millions of members to work together.
The book also focuses on the many scientists who have studied or are still studying the tiny creatures.Most of the chapters seem to focus on Edward O. Wilson which they should.He IS the Ant Man of the late 20th and early 21st Century.
Tons of wit and humor, many of the chapters follow the lives of ant colonies in the nature reserve of La Selva in Costa Rica.Many of details of daily life really added to my knowledge of ants.Most authors just don't bother with the small stuff in other books but Erich Hoyt understood that with ants the small stuff IS the important stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone who's ever wondered about ants
A solid look into the world of ants, Hoyt uses an interesting and engaging mix of dramatic narrative and more traditional discussion. At least half of the book contains the trappings of a novel, tracking the lives of individual ants and colonies as they exemplify points in his discourse. He also, less successfully, maintains this device when discussing ant god Edward Wilson, who is legendary among myrmecologists everywhere. Readers are invited to identify with the leafcutter scout who eventually sacrifices her life in service of her queen, or the two enormous bullet ants who slowly wind up their tales after their colony is destroyed. The book explores the mating cycle of the ants, the relationships between individuals within the colonies, the relationships between different colonies of the same or different species, and the way that ants deal with adverse environmental conditions. He also touches on the relationship of ants to the larger ecosystem that surrounds it, and gives the reader the theoretical knowledge necessary to see an ant colony as a superorganism.
The Good and the Bad:
I really enjoyed this book. The scientific discussion was easy for me to follow as a layman, and the narratives were very engaging and even exciting in parts. Even though I've read one or two other books on ants, this is the first time that I've walked away feeling as though I have a good handle on what ants are, and what they mean to the world. What's more, I put the book down caring about ants, and wanting to observe them in their natural habitat. I think it's safe to say that I will never walk past an ant on the sidewalk without devoting a moment's thought to what that ant is up to. Hoyt also gives a good cross section of species that exemplify all of the oddities that are the mark of a highly diverse and evolved group of insects, and I liked that he explored some of the non-obvious issues that come up when studying ants. For example, he talks a bit about how ant species are named, and how researchers collect the ants they study.
I also appreciated the drawings that were included throughout the text, and the quotations that kick off each chapter. Little touches like this make the journey more fun.
On the downside, Hoyt makes the mistake of devoting a lot of space to discuss Wilson and myrmecological colleague William Brown. I enjoyed the facts, but I just felt that Hoyt was too close to these subjects to portray them objectively. Two scientific giants who are very active in their field can't be treated objectively by a science writer who has a personal relationship with them, in my opinion. As a result, we as readers are subjected to a lot of compliments and almost no criticisms of Wilson and Brown, and we also have to hear about their side of the story in scientific controversies. It's not that I didn't find the topics interesting; I just question whether I was reading a colored version of the truth.
What I learned:
So much that it can't be capsulized, but I will note a couple of interesting ant facts that stuck with me. Ants enter into a series of complex interdependent relationships with the animals and plants around them. Birds and other predators might track a marching column of army ants in order to benefit from the flood of escaping prey. Beetles disguise themselves as ants in order to gain access to their homes. Aphids are kept as cows, and protected in exchange. Mites attach themselves to the feet of ants, giving the ants extra climbing power. Trees attract ants with food and shelter, in exchange for which the ant colony will keep more damaging foragers away. Leafcutter ants collect bits of leaves by the thousands, but they don't eat them. Instead, they use them as mulch to grow a certain kind of fungus, which they do eat. When a queen leaves a colony to found her own new colony, she places a bit of fungus beneath her tongue and uses it to start a new garden. If she forgets to do this, or the new fungus doesn't grow, she will die. Amazon ants can't do anything for themselves, but they can raid other colonies, stealing the pupae to raise as slave workers. Without the slaves, the Amazons couldn't even feed themselves.

Product Description
What is this book about?

Professional Java Tools for Extreme Programming is a practical, code-intensive guide to the tools that Enterprise Java developers need when using Extreme Programming (XP) methods. It covers the key tools used to automate the most complex parts of the XP process: application integration, testing, and deployment.

What does this book cover?

The book covers major new releases of Ant, JUnit, and Cactus, plus important new tools, inlcuding XDoclet, Maven, Anthill, and Eclipse.

The book begins with a brief introduction to XP methods. It then jumps right into the tools, providing a brief overview of the uses and features of each tool. Next come tutorials showing best practices for using the tools -- the authors show how each tool is used to develop and test the same sample application, based on Sun's well-known Pet Store example. For each tool, the author provides lots of code examples and directions for setting up scripts for automating that development step. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost useless now
A majority of the content are out of date now. A typical example is the chapter for Maven that is almost useless. Instead of reading this book, I'd rather go Google.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book !!
I am an experienced Java developer and new to the J2EE field.
I bought this book to learn how to use the open-source tools with the XP attitude. Mostly for the XDoclet and JUnit.
Well, the examples are not so bad.
There are SO MANY ERRORS *in the code itself*. It happens, I know.
So I entered the web site to check for more information. Nothing !!
No errata and the book's forum is not active AT ALL.
I downloaded the source code for the examples. Half of the book's examples is not there. The web site (and the forum) won't mention anything about it.
The other half is filled with errors.

This is not a professional book !
I did learn something from it. A little bit XDoclet and which tools I should learn and know. But that's all.

WROX publication lost a customer. I won't buy any books they publish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I bought this book hoping for a quick jumpstart to getting a simple xdoclet/struts app up and running.

The example code from the "Building Struts Apps with Ant and XDoclet" is so bad, it's a disgrace.I spent more time figuring out why their code wasn't even close to working, than I would have if I had just skipped their book altogether.It couldn't work, it never worked, and it shouldn't have been published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Surprise
I ordered this book based on the title and the preview content here on Amazon (I couldn't find it at the B&N near my work). I was very pleasantly surprised at the practical, nuts-and-bolts approach that the authors took to XP and the tools in this book. I was also extremely pleased at how well the authors showed the integration of these tools into a sophisticated and professional development environment. This is not easy, especially when working with a wide range of tools which includes
* CVS
* Ant
* XDoclet
* JUnit
* JUnitPerf
* Bugzilla
* JMeter
* Cactus
* jcoverage
* Swing testing tools like Jemmy
* Maven
* Anthill

And even though all these tools are O.S., some projects are very territorial (eg they consider other tools to be the competition) so just reading the docs will not always help you choose the right tool for the right job or learn how to use the tools together.

The code I downloaded from the Wrox site was a little rough (some missing files), but the version I downloaded last week was *much* better and has solved all the earlier problems I was having. I'm glad the authors were responsive and willing to release fixes. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars a solid start for beginners
Seriously, I can't find any other book right now that lays Maven out in such an easy to approach way.All the material online is reference based entirely and my fingers are practically bleeding from digging through google every five seconds.If you've never setup Maven before, buy this book while you still have your hair. ... Product Description

Sean is a drifter who is working as a building laborer and waiting for something to happen in his life.  When he is offered easy money to tail someone and even more easy money to dispose of him, the prospect of some adventure and fast cash is extremely tempting.  Sean doesn't even know the man, and there's no chance of being caught.  Soon, however, it becomes apparent that he is caught in an intricate plot, and there doesn’t seem to be any easy means of escape.

4-0 out of 5 stars A story of brutality, revenge, and ultimately human affairs
Actually, Charles Higson narrates a simple story. A seemingly ordinary person working mostly in construction sites, is given a bizzare opportunity to make some fast and good money. He's offered more than he'd make working in 2-3 months to follow an accountant for several days in his everyday life and report what he discovers to a shadowy figure who obviously has some even more shadowy scores to settle.

He does so, but as it so often happens in life the situation starts taking some weird twists unforeseen by him and by his instructors. This ordinary person sudenly finds himself becoming murderer and then a fugitive as the deals he's put together have not come through.

But lo and behold because all this happens in the first half of the book. From then the story takes a turn for the surreal and brutal as the protagonist of the book gets captured and goes through what can only be described as utter hell. You'll have a pretty difficult time forgetting the latter part of the book let alone even reading it if you happen to not be gifted with a strong stomach.
This is story written in excellent pace and with nicely distributed touches of humour, cynicism and brio by an author who obviously has tremendous potential. Charles Higson has no limitations about the stretches he gives his story and you're constantly in for new surprises as you progress in the story. In a new generation of authors who are bringing forth the uglier side of human nature in a society governed by the warped ethics of the money-god and the relentless effort of people to survive regardless of what this might involve. Great stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moral of the story: How to break the rules and get away with it.
This book starts off well and you feel sorry for the ant.It seems he is going to escape oppression.However, his character is not very admirable when he finds it is dangerous outside the hill and decides he wants to go back.The only good moral value taught is when he considers lying to get back in the hill, but tells the truth.Even this is tarnished though, when his telling the truth gains him sympathy from the policeman guard and information on how to get away with it next time!When he returns he corrupts his friend to "take a day off" too.The only reason I can give it one star is that you could use this book to discuss what NOT to do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Ant's need a Break!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old grandson loves these books
I purchased Tremendous Tractors, Flashing Fire Engines and Terrific Trains for my grandson.He has a lot of books and loves being read to - these 3 are on very high rotation.He likes to have them read to him over and over.For my point of view the illustrations are bright and lively and the words flow and rhyme well.They also provide intelligent information on each "machine" which is capable of being understood by your average 3 year old.I thoroughly recommend them to all the parents and grandparents out there - your little ones will love them!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard read
Our little boy loves tractors, so this was a hit, but words are not flowing and harder to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Tractors
My 20 month old son loves tractors and this book had very colorful and different tractors on every page.It also had the animals driving the tractors, which he loved.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for the tractor pictures
This book is great for the tractor pictures, but the story that goes along with it is kind of BOOORING!

5-0 out of 5 stars my 2.5 yr old LOVES this book
we have this title and Terrific Trains by the same authors.My toddler cant get enough of either one.I am looking today to get all the books in this "series" ... Read more
