5-0 out of 5 stars Wish there was a way to reach the unconvinced
I bought two copies of this book - one for me and one for my son (lives overseas). Some might think these wereunnecessary purchases for a vegan to make, but there a benefits in having (and reading) such a book, particularly as in my case, the "unbelievers" around me really do treat their meat-eating as part of a belief system based on "It's what animals are there for" and "Humans are at the top of the food chain" and even "Carrots scream when you eat them, you are no better than me!". For those searching for reasons to give up meat, this is book is an excellent place to start and for those, like me, with almost hysterical (seriously, if I don't eat a sausage at the staff barbeque the sky will not fall) response to any food/ethical choice discussion from the omnivores nearby, this is ammunition (as I tend to get tongue-tied when affronted, it is handy to be able cite coherent details).

The chapter on Personal Action is particularly useful as a reminder of what one can do. Not a comfortable read for me, I heartily recommend Meat Market to all those already convinced, curious and especially to those deeply sceptical (may it open your eyes).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for vegetarians to read!
When I read this book, I had been consuming a mostly vegan diet for a few years, primarily to reduce my environmental footprint, and also because I've always gravitated toward lots of fruits, veggies, and whole grains, for their nutritional value, so my diet was de facto mostly vegan.I was only vaguely aware of the cruelties caused to animals in the fish, beef, pork, dairy, and egg industries.I never would have considered becoming a vegan activist, but this book opened my eyes and got me motivated and interested in going vegan and promoting veganism for others, too!Since then I've been leafletting and donating to organizations like Vegan Outreach, as well as reading more on the subject. This is an excellent book for vegetarians to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Want to know all the nasty details!
Not as descriptive as I would have liked but very informative of things I did not think about before

5-0 out of 5 stars Love for animals
I hope someday we can change the natural order so that there is no nonconsensual suffering or harm done to any creature. Nature is set up for the powerful devouring the small, or harming the small against their will. I do believe humans can be truly loving and try to minimize this pain as much as possible. Go Vegan, treat animals as friends not as things to be consumed or used at the cost of their suffering. Make it a law not to kill or use animals for any reason other than companionship or kind joy. It seems impossible now, but I do think we could free and protect animals throughout the world. Slavery was once an intractable economic and pleasurable institution in America and perhaps people thought it was impossible then to abolish it and now at least the obvious forms of slavery are gone. We could do the same for animals. Maybe take a Gandhi or a peaceful resistance movement, but I could see a world where animals were never treated like things to be abused - at least by human beings.Science, our desires, everything - should serve love. Love is kind and gentle, love wishes every good for the beloved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be life-changing
This book is required reading for a course I teach.I chose it because it it well-researched, brings together many sources of data regarding the treatment of animals in the food industry, and provocatively examines alternatives. In addition, it is very readable. My students, year after year, comment that this book "grabbed me,""changed my life," "was fascinating," "shocked me," and "makes me look at my personal responsibility in how our society treats food animals," and they always ask, "why hasn't anyone given me this information before?" This book gives me hope, because of the impact it has on the students, who as responsible citizens will one day be in a position to effect change for the animals. ... Read more

Behavior has always been recognized as an important indicator of health and welfare in farm animals. Until recently, however, the curricula of agriculture and veterinary students have paid little attention to these issues. This situation has now changed and most students will receive a formal course in the subject and require a basic textbook. This book fulfills the need for such a comprehensive textbook. The third edition was originally published in 1990 by Bailliere Tindall, but is now reprinted because of the demand expressed by teachers and students. It provides a comprehensive guide to the behavior of farm animals and to the objective evaluation of their welfare. While primarily directed at students, it will also be valuable for veterinary practitioners, farmers and biologists seeking an introduction to the subject. ... Read more

Dogs chase each other and wrestle. Cats pounce and bite. These animals may look like they are fighting, but if you pay close attention - as world-renowned biologist Marc Bekoff does - you can see they are playing and learning the rules of their games. In "Animals at Play", Bekoff shows us how animals behave when they play, with full-color illustrations showing animals in action and having fun - from squirrels climbing up a tree to polar bears somersaulting in the snow.Bekoff emphasizes how animals communicate, cooperate and learn to play fair and what happens when they break the rules. He uses lively illustrations and simple explanations of what it means when a sea lion swims with kelp in its mouth or when two dogs bow to each other. Bekoff also describes what happens when animals become too aggressive and how they apologize, forgive and learn to trust one another. This entertaining and informative book will delight every child and show readers how animals - and humans - interact when they are having fun. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fair Play Beautifully Illustrated
A wonderful book that adults will enjoy reading to young children age 4 and which the children will enjoy because of the illustrations which are worth the price of the book just on their own.The lessons are that all beings -- animal and human have rules to live by and we can learn from watching how the animals do it.The paintings stay away from being cutsey and anthropomoric but are energetic, engaging, fun and just plain beautiful.A lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animals and Kids Have Something in Common
Few kids will suspect what award-winning ethologist Marc Bekoff helped discover: animals have a moral code. Those that cheat, lie, or break the rules are shunned. In order to work their way back into the group, they must apologize. Just like humans. This revelation comes at the end of Bekoff's new 32-page, picture book, Animals at Play: Rules of the Game.
The rest of the book is devoted to explaining why and how animals play. Nineteen diverse species, from dogs to ravens, are discussed, and readers learn what to look for in order to tell whether they are playing or fighting. Complimenting Bekoff's descriptions are Michael J. DiMotta's whimsical, full-color illustrations of smiling critters enjoying themselves.
Animal lovers in grades 4 and up will enjoy reading about a topic relevant to their own lives. Parents and teachers can use this fresh evidence of fair play among animals to nurture a respect for all creatures, both four-legged and two.

The illustrations in this book are GORGEOUS.They are so sweet, charming, and memorable. I love looking at every one of them.I actually want two of these books --- one to keep on the kids' shelf, and another to keep on MY shelf, because I want this book to stay in gorgeous shape. I just adore it, and know what I am giving as stocking stuffers to all the children I know this holiday season. Dimotta is a real talent -- his animals just make me smile. So, so sweet.

Marc Bekoff's Animals at Play is a delightful and informative book that gives children the tools to understand the importance of play in an animal's life. The book provides detailed information about how animals go about engaging friends or family members in a bit of fun and also explains how they indeed abide by rules during these social interactions. Product Description
The relationship between animals and humans is more complex today than ever before. In addition to the animals that have served as household pets, and the farm animals that have provided labor and food, countless monkeys, rabbits, rats, and cats have enabled modern scientists to treat and cure humanity's most devastating illnesses. This aspect of animal-human interaction has engendered a bitter enmity between animal rights activists and the biomedical researchers whose work depends on the use (and oftentimes the killing) of laboratory animals.

In An Odyssey with Animals, veterinarian and sleep researcher Adrian Morrison argues that humane animal use in biomedical research is an indispensable tool of medical science, and that efforts to halt such use constitute a grave threat to human health and wellbeing. The target of repeated acts of intimidation by anonymous animal rights activists because of his own research, Morrison is himself an animal advocate, and this volume is the culmination of his years spent negotiating the treacherous divide between a legitimate concern for animals and the importance of biomedical research. Drawing on the disciplines of philosophy, history, biology, and animal behavior, Morrison crafts a multi-faceted argument in favor of using animals humanely in research, the center of which is his staunch belief that human interests must be the primary concern of science and society. Along the way, Morrison delves into other human uses of animals in domains such as agriculture, hunting, and education, examining each use along with its philosophical, moral, and ecological implications. The result is a thought-provoking, intelligent and fair-minded discussion of a charged subject-- of the past and present of animals' relationships with humans, and how and why we should be able to use them as we do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Those Interested In The Facts
Just like any emotionally charged topic, the use of animals in research (and other aspects of our lives) is filled with controversies, strong opinions and, unfortunately, misused quotes and unsupported claims. As an animal lover and advocate, I often get frustrated by the lack of reliable sources of information on both sides of the debate. In his book, Adrian Morrison - a veterinarian, researcher and a public figure - meticulously analyzes the facts and lies surrounding the issue and, most importantly, helps the general public to understand what "animal research" really means. He takes us on a tour of several laboratories while discussing such classic cases as Taub's work on neuroregeneration in monkeys, and the University of Pennsylvania's Head Injury Laboratory research. At last, there is a rational and detailed account of what happened in those labs based on facts rather than attempts of emotional manipulation. He gives specific examples of how animal research helped every one of us (think of penicillin and other antibiotics so routinely used in contemporary medicine). Finally, Morrison carefully considers such issues as what it means to be human, and how animals are similar to and different from us. How far should we go to protect the laboratory animals and ensure their well-being? Can we be held responsible for providing for their "happiness", if we don't even know "what kinds of pleasure animals of various species are capable of experiencing" or even "how to provide for the psychological well-being of our own species"?These, and many other intriguing questions are given careful consideration in "An Odyssey With Animals". A definite "must-read" for anyone interested in the topic and the cold facts of the heated debate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moral issues are complex
This book is a timely review that thoughtfully thinks through the issues that have come to be known as "Animal Rights". The timeliness is that it is just one example of many such issues in which the rights of one group clashes with those of another leading to extreme polarizing positions. In this instance the author takes us through his own experience of being one of those engaged in biomedical research, using animals, who hadhis laboratory destroyed, data lost and himself and his family threatened. What is unique and moving about this book is how Dr. Morrison shares his journey from his first emotional response to how he has come to look into this as a problem to be understood on many levels: historically(where did this come from), psychologically (what motivates these people), socially (what can we do to reduce the level of threat that leads to such confrontations)? In this it is a model of using our brain power strength to find ways to possible alternatives in such right/wrong dilemmas. There is never any compromising in this book on the need for the use of animals in research aimed at understanding disease and dysfunction and in testing potential treatments, at least at this time. But also that animals should be cared for as humanely as possible in this endeavor. The author does not stop there in defending his turf, but looks at the cultural and ethical issues in other destructive uses of animals-bullfighting, cock fighting and how animals are used to produce our food and clothing. In this wide ranging look at the many ways we use our ability to control animals for our purposes without their consent we have responsibilities to do as little harm as possible, and to seek creative alternatives. This reader came away admiring the author as a survivor of a personal attack from which he examined himself, and his profession for any culpability and can now share the changes he advocates that will preserve the mission in a more respectful way.

2-0 out of 5 stars couldn't finish the book...
This book started out too philosophical, then became too scientific. After reading about 1/3 of the book, I skipped to the conclusion and returned the book to the library.I already knew the author's stance on animals from reading the jacket.I couldn't force myself to trudge through the boring details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful analysis is what this issue needs
Morrison has written a thoughtful book about a complex and difficult issue: where do humans stand in relation to animals? The title is apt because it is truly an odyssey: a long, wandering, and eventful journey.

I only wish that more people who find themselves entrenched in one or another point of view could step back and ask themselves penetrating questions about what they believe, and why they believe it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced and Nuanced Look at Animal Research
Whether you are a researcher or a lay person, pro-research or pro-animal rights--or anywhere in between--this book will give you much to pause and consider. Despite having been personally harassed by extremists for years, his own lab destroyed by animal rights vandals, Morrison has written no polemic. Instead he uses these attacks as a jumping off point from which to delve into the issues that surround human use of animals. In doing so, he uncovers layers of nuance in a debate notorious for its polarization.

Morrison brings a multi-faceted perspective to the debate: he is a pet-lover, a farm-boy, a veterinarian, a research scientist, and even a clinical research trial volunteer. Over the last 15 years, he has made a methodical study of the animal rights issue--its history, its messages, and the many schools of thought within and around it.

Morrison offers a strong and convincing case for animal research. He describes the specific role animal research has played in his own research into REM sleep as well as in many historical discoveries. He then systematically refutes both scientific distortions and philosophical presumptions of the animal rights movement.

He does not, however, let researchers off the hook. He encourages his fellow scientists to avoid dismissing all advocates for animals out of hand, lest they disregard legitimate welfare recommendations as efforts to stymie discovery. Morrison supports the humane use of animals, but only so long as we remember our responsibility to them.

He makes his own views clear, along with his reasoning for them, while leaving room for readers to come to their own, likely divergent, decisions. No matter where you eventually fall in the debate yourself, reading _Odyssey_ will enrich your understanding of a difficult and complex issue and add depth to whatever conclusions you draw.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for any animals lover
There is not much I can add to the glorious reviews of this book that others have already left except to say that I agree with everyone 100%.

This is a MUST read book for any animal lover. In fact, I think those THINKING about adopting an animal should read this too. It shows people how having an animal in your home is not something to be taken lightly. It's a serious life long commitment for both you and the animal.

Please give to your local animal shelter. Donate blankets, towels, sheets, and pillow cases for animals to sleep on so they don't have to sleep on cold concrete. Donate food and cleaning supplies. Donate money. Even better, donate your TIME! Visit your local shelter and offer to take a dog for a walk, or to socialize the cats. There is so much you can do to help out. The first step is to stop by your shelter and ask "What can I do to help?". Even an hour of your time is better then nothing. And if you are truly an animal lover you will make an effort to help out as often as you can.

This is truly a MUST READ book. I think it should be read in school too.

Another great book by the same author is "The Night Before a Dogtown Christmas".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn and highly entertaining.
The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located in Angel Canyon, (Southern) Utah. This oversized book reads like an interactive bedtime story for children and is utterly delightful. The sanctuary receives around 20,000 tourists each year. This book entertains children and gives a virtual tour of all the animals living on the sanctuary. Since many of the animals living at the sanctuary have been rescued from bad people or are survivors of disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, readers learn how much care goes into helping them. The book helps children understand why some animals are nervous, shy, or scared of humans. It also explains how people can help care for animals.

As children read or listen to the stories, their eyes and imaginations are tantalized with large, colorful photos of animals found on every page. A couple of the back pages tell how kids can help the animals in their area.

***** All-in-all, I found this to be an exceptional book, perfect for any time of the day or night. Though great for bedtime, I believe it would perfect for class time as well. Teachers should seriously consider picking up a copy to determine whether they could fit this in their class schedule. It is well written with simple, easy to understand, words. Best of all, kids will learn from an early age how to act around and care for animals. Kids will read about all types of animals from plucky duckies to bunnies, from cats to dogs, from horses to pigs, and many more. In a word, "Bunnyreffic!" *****

5-0 out of 5 stars An Animal's BEST FRIEND
I really like this book. It is a wonderful way to educate kids (and adults will enjoy it as well) about love, compassion, and respect for animals.

We need to teach our kids while they are young, to treat animals the way that they themselves would want to be treated.

What we sow in our children today, animals will reap tomorrow.

So if we want to end animal abuse, animal cruelty, animal murder (euthanizing healthy animals) etc, in the future, it will ONLY happen, if we teach our kids TODAY, that animals are living, breathing, feeling, loving, soul-filled children of God, just like we human animals are.

Trust me when I say that getting this gift for your child (or a fellow adult) will be a gift that keeps on giving and giving......because this book is about love, compassion and living in peace with, and taking care of, our animal friends.

Animals are a huge part of our society; but, far too often, they are mistreated and cast aside. Luckily, there are sanctuaries across the nation who provide these particular animals with lifelong homes where they can live in peace and harmony with loving caregivers, and fellow animals. Nora Lee Kelsey takes us behind-the-scenes of one of these particular sanctuaries - Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Over the years, southern Utah's Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has become one of the biggest animal sanctuaries in the nation. Home to dogs and cats, along with the less typical rabbits, horses, ducks, pigs, sheep, and many more, Best Friends makes a difference in the lives of animals on a daily basis. While many visit the location each year, others don't always have the means or time to make the trip. With Kelsey's LET'S GO VISIT BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY, readers have the opportunity to do just that - from their very own homes!

Laden with gorgeous color photos, LET'S GO VISIT BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY takes readers on a trip to Horse Haven, the Bunny House, Feathered Friends, Cat World, and Dogtown. At each stop, you have the opportunity to meet and greet with some of the residents of each area, learning their likes and dislikes, and glimpsing bits and pieces of what they do on a daily basis. After the trip is said and done, some of the Best Friends residents provide readers with tips on what they can do to help animals - even going so far as including websites you can visit.

I have loved Best Friends Animal Sanctuary ever since I learned about it more than ten years ago, so I was thrilled when I learned that Nora Lee Kelsey had taken the time to pen a gorgeous book about the location. The many pictures bring the animals to life; while the information packed onto each and every page provides the reader with enough facts to become a Best Friends Animal Sanctuary wiz! Perfect for animal lovers to read at home with their families, or as an instructional tool in the classroom, LET'S GO VISIT BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY is a necessity for all. I could not have imagined a more perfect book. Two paws up!

This work takes the reader for an inside look at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located Southern Utah.Thousands of animals have been helped through this organization and Ms. Kelsey has given us a child's eye view of its workings, mission, needs, and indeed, delights. The book is designed to be read to children, and more specifically, is ideal for groups of children, although it is an absolute delight for the adult reader also. The photographs are quite professionally done and are works of art themselves. The author's easy style, humor and obvious enthusiasm for her subject shine through on ever page. She takes us on a verbal tour, supplemented by wonderful photographs, through this great organization. The author takes great pains in explaining the socialization process of these animals, stressing not only their physical needs, but emotional as well. This is a bit different than some of the works in this genre. We are given a peek at the different areas of this sanctuary, the bird house, horse area, pigs, dogs, cats, et al.Some individual stories of these critters are told as well as the source for many of the animals helped here.

This book is certainly designed for the class room. Its easy reading style and humor will be appreciated by the children. Each page is full of useful information and the photographs are well coordinated. Many questions are asked which are ideal for taking the children into a discussion. The author has also provided pages full of ideas for class projects, given some great web sites for further research, and above all, has infused an enthusiasm into her work which is rather contagious.Volunteerism is stressed here and the point is well made that everyone can do their little share to change what has become almost a national tragedy. Now don't misunderstand that statement. This is not a "sad puppy book," something that I find difficult to read to younger children.Everything here is upbeat and positive while still being quite truthful about the plight of these unwanted animals.

A WORD OF CAUTION:I am retired now and spend most of my days acting as a substitute teacher in local schools. We live in an area, Southern Missouri, which is more or less the puppy mill capital of the known universe. This is something my wife and I have fought for years and years. The author is quite harsh, and well she should be, when addressing this subject. The problem comes, in my case, where I will have a room full of about 25 students, and out of that 25, at least six or seven will have parents or grandparents who make their living as puppy mill owners.I plan to use this work at those schools, but I also plan to do a bit of verbal editing when this portion of the book is read to the students. While they need to know about such things, I am not about to be critical of their parents in front of their fellow students.Goodness knows I have had many heated conversations with the parents of these kids on this subject, indeed having been instrumental in shutting a few down, but don't feel the children should be subjected to the same line as I would give their mom and dad.

That being said, I cannot recommend this work highly enough. It is an absolute wealth of information and a delight to the ear and eye.The author has done a wonderful job here.I do wish there were more organizations out there like Best Friends...we certainly need them.

Product Description

Animals and Science examines what science has (and has not) taught us about the nature of nonhuman animals and explores the moral, religious, social, and scientific implications of those teachings. It shows how the scientific study of animals, especially their cognitive abilities, has transformed our understanding of them. Animals and Science traces our evolving understanding of animal pain and considers its moral relevance to humans. It discusses Darwin's belief-shattering notion that species differences are not absolute, then traces its impact to the present day.

Ultimately, Animals and Science is about the nature of science—the kinds of questions science can and cannot answer, and the role of theory in shaping the interpretation of evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars very impressive
This is a very impressive scholarly work. Basically, it's an overview of, among other things, all remotely philosophical issues that tie in with animals. One regrettable thing is that it's not available in paperback. Hopefully it will eventually be issued in paperback so it's cheaper.

Professor Shanks is also Vice-President of Americans for Medical Advancement. AFMA promotes human wellness by exposing the lost opportunities for cures and the life-threatening results of animal-modeled biomedical research. They educate the public, showing how government and charities misspend medical research dollars and place us at grave risk.

Animal-modeled biomedical research yields results that cannot be safely applied to humans. It diverts research dollars that should be going to proven methods of curing human disease.

They disclose how industry introduces and keeps unhealthy and often deadly products in the marketplace through animal experiments.

Here is some information on the book:

Animals and Science examines the debates, from the Renaissance to the present, surrounding issues of animal rights, consciousness, and self-awareness.

Are animals self-aware, conscious beings worthy of our moral respect? Do they have rights? What are our obligations toward animals? Humans have grappled with these questions for five centuries. Our answers have revealed a great deal about animals, and even more about ourselves.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) is a proposed inter-governmental agreement to recognise that animals are sentient, to prevent cruelty and reduce suffering, and to promote standards on the welfare of animals such as farm animals, companion animals, animals in scientific research, draught animals, wildlife animals and animals in recreation. It is proposed that a UDAW be adopted by the United Nations. If endorsed by the UN (as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was) the UDAW would be a non-binding set of principles that acknowledges the importance of the sentience of animals and human responsibilities towards them. The principles were designed to encourage and enable national governments to introduce and improve animal protection legislation and initiatives. ... Read more
