Product Description
Over half the households in America include an animal companion.Yet behind this immense love of animals lies an equally immense tragedy: each year, community animal shelters take in eight to twelve million lost and unwanted dogs and cats who face an uncertain fate.

One at a Time: A Week in an American Animal Shelter brings this issue vividly to life via a true account of 7 days in a typical U.S. animal shelter. With compelling photos and moving vignettes, this book chronicles the stories of 75 animals who passed through a Northern California animal shelter during one week.Their gripping stories include excerpts from actual shelter records; the words of shelter workers, volunteers, and visitors; and the final conclusion of each animal's journey through the animal shelter system.

Look into the eyes of these animals and let their stories give you a riveting and unforgettable glimpse into this nation's homeless animal tragedy.Whether it is the lost dog quickly reunited with his family because he was wearing an ID tag, the frightened cat given up by guardians who didn't understand the commitment of caring for her, the cat facing euthanasia or the dog joyfully adopted into a new home, each animal in One at a Time has an important lesson to teach and a powerful message to share.

One at a Time will help you to see the real faces behind the numbers, and to experience the miracles and heartbreak that play out every day in our nation's shelters... one animal at a time.

Even more importantly, One at a Time will give you hope, because this tragedy can be ended and each one of us can be part of the solution... offering us the chance to become better people, to reawaken our connection with other living beings, and to reaffirm the sanctity of life itself. The animals of One at a Time will show you how. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener
This book is heartwrenching and very truthful to what happens to millions of unwanted animals in shelters across America. Any person who thinks that pets are throw-aways, believes that spaying and/or neutering is unthinkable or to expensive to do, and irresponsible pet owners (for one reason or another) should have to read this book!! It is a real eye opener to what really happens to millions of dogs and cats every year but yet they stay loyal, to whomever, until that animal does or does not have a happy ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book everybody should read!
If you're reading this review it's probably because you love animals and you want to buy a book that talks about them. The truth is that, well, it's not easy to go to the end of this book without feeling anger and sadness! But it's important to know that getting to know the reality is the only way to take action. I want to thanks the authors to gave the public this beautiful book and most of all, to gave the animals a voice.
Everybody should read it and have a copy at home!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling story--
An amazing story of a typical animal shelter and the plight of lost or abandandoned animals.A difficult read, tear stains were left on most pages. It pays tribute to shelter workers and the animals who are cared for by these selfless individuals.I wish everyone would read this book.It is a compelling argument against puppy mills and for all spay/neuter campaigns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely moving account of life in a shelter
I don't remember the last time that I was as affected by a book as this one. There are stories and descriptions in this book that just won't leave me.The one that I remember most is the one where the authors describe how, for that brief instant, an animal no longer wanted by its owner being left at a shelter comes to the sad recognition that its guardian will never be coming back.I am also sickened and disheartened by the reasons that some owners give for leaving their pets in shelters. This is a very difficult book to read for people that love animals and their pets. The authors have done a terrific job describing the inner world of the animal shelter and I highly recommend this book to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very moving and opens your eyes
One At A Time says it all about a situation in this country that needs to be brought to the fore front of our society. The book was moving, touching, and most of all it tells it like it is in what shelters across this country have to deal with. It touches on the emotions of not only the authors but also what the staff at shelters deal with day to day. We as humans need to open our eyes and realize that we share this planet with not just ourselves but with dogs and cats that some would just treat as disposible and not think twice about doing so. The animals have feelings and the authors touch on the saddness of being given up and some the joy of finding new hope in a new home. The pictures in the book of each animal and what the out come is for each one can at times break your heart. The book is up front on showing statistics and how we as a society can turn the tide and make a better life for our four legged companions. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Be prepared to have tissues on hand as this can be a difficult read at times but one that needs to be shared by many. Thanks to the authors that have written a beautiful and eye opening book, I now volunteer for two no-kill shelters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for veterinarians working with shelters
Veterinarians working with animal shelters quickly begin to realize that maintaining the physical and psychological health of shelter animals can be extremely challenging. This book covers the basic principles of disease management in shelters with emphasis on preventative measures.I am not aware of any other book that addresses these issues with such depth.

Along with "Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff" I think this text is essential for veterinarians working with shelters in any capacity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advice For True Pet Lovers
If any shelter, rescue group or popular "Animal Welfare Group" tells you to kill a healthy cat or dog, tell them "No, I am not a murderer, and this precious soul deserves to live equally as much as you and I do."
You may be asked to leave the group, but you will have something that they dont: Dignity, courage, and a reverence for the precious lives of your fellow precious living souls.

P.S. Try to adopt, or sneak the cat or dog out of there before the murderers kill them. There are rescue groups who will find them a good home, if you cant find one.

For more info on the facts (there are alot of myths being spread by the killers) about No Kill, do a search online for "Nathan Winograd Official Site" or "No Kill Advocacy Center"

Thanks for caring about someone else's life except your own.

P.P.S. This book was written by the In-Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), who, along with PETA and the ASPCA, SUPPORT murdering shelter pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and very informative.
Great for non-profits looking to help increase their volunteer initiatives.Well written with lot's of resouces to call upon in addition to the information written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful!
As someone who is looking to get into a career in animal welfare, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. The HSUS obviously is a very well-known and well-respected institution, so I know that I can trust their advice and information about volunteer management, among other topics. It's one thing to read a book by an expert, but quite another when an organization is willing to stamp its name and reputation on the book, as the HSUS has done for this book. Not only was the book full of step by step and detailed information, but it was also a great read! I expected to be bored by it, but I actually found it to be well-written and even interesting! I would receommend this book to anyone involved with the animal welfare field, whether they are staff, board members, or volunteers. Other types of volunteer-focuses organizations may also get something out of this book as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great artwork, charming, funny...
I gave this a present for my 3 yr old nephews and it immediately became one of their favorites. (In fact, I liked the book so much I got another copy for myself.) It is illustrated with a mix of photo-collage and drawings, and almost every page is a story within itself. This is much richer than the simple linear style of many children's books.
Separately, I'm an animal lover, and I love that it shows the shelter as a place of warmth, caring and dedication.A percentage of the book's profits is being donated to the Wood Green Shelter, so when you buy it everybody wins.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Animal Lovers Everywhere.....
Come spend a day with Patricia Casey at Wood Green Animal Shelter."It's a place in the city where sick, stray, or abandoned animals are taken care of."First let's meet the staff and their own pets who like to come to work with them. Then, let's get the shelter and clinic ready for business...preparing the waiting and examining rooms, feeding and attending to the animals who are staying there because they're sick, injured, or homeless, and need help. Finally at noon the clinic opens and the vet is ready to see patients. When the day is over, the staff feeds and prepares the animals for the night, and then go home, themselves, to eat and rest, because tomorrow is another busy day.....Patricia Casey has written a charming and informative picture book, full of fascinating and engaging stories about both the people who work at the shelter, and the many different animals who've come to stay or live there. Her simple and straightforward text is interesting and entertaining to read, but it's the busy collage artwork that really makes this book stand out.Ms Casey combines photographs, watercolors and colored pencil drawings to create a detailed smorgasbord of visual fun, and youngsters will enjoy poring over the illustrations and finding something new and exciting each time they open the book.Perfect for kids 5-9, One Day At Wood Green Animal Shelter is a clever and innovative story that your little animal lover will want to read again and again. ... Product Description
The battle lines have been drawn: No Kill advocates on one side. Those who kill sheltered animals on the other. Can't we all just get along? Irreconcilable Differences says we can't because shelters act in ways which are the antithesis of the values most Americans hold dear. We are a nation of animal lovers. But the shelters we expect to save animals are instead needlessly killing about four million of them every year. Thankfully, animal lovers all over the U.S. are increasingly rejecting the excuses and blame shifting of shelter administrators used to justify that killing. And it is that rejection of the status quo, propelled by the American public's great love of companion animals, which is explored in this book's essays. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cover Of This Book Speaks Volumes
Irreconcilable Differences and Redemption needs to be put on the desks and in the hands of Veterinarians, City Council Members, Mayors, Shelter Directors, Rescue Groups, shelter volunteers, shelter employees and homes of animal lovers. That's why I bought several copies of both.

The collection of essays in Irreconcilable Differences is a nice extension to Redemption because it touches on some new issues going more in depth of the No Kill Equation and about the impact the No Kill cause has had since Redemption was first released 3 years ago.

In the chapter, What Is True Euthanasia, Mr. Winograd shares his personal story about his family's companion animal, Gina. Very touching. Throughout the book and in the acknowledgements section you can feel Mr. Winograd's deep sincere compassion for all animals.

Mr. Winograd writes about "having great optimism" and that "we have the hearts and minds of the public on our side"....He continues...."and it is that love that gives me faith that we will fix our broken shelter system. Ultimately, not only will we save lives but we will also create a future where every animal will be respected and cherished and where every individual life will be protected and revered."

Isn't that the truth!!

~Well said Nathan!~

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Up Things About Shelters Most of Don't Know About
I've been rescuing animals for 15 yrs and worked as a shelter volunteer. I did not know the real reasons behind why millions of pets are killed. I incorrectly thought it was because there are just too many of them. Turns out it's not quite that simple.

Winograd, as an insider, reveals what is at the core of the problems in our shelters.

He points out the mentality of most shelter managers is to kill, not to save. He points out how a lot of animal rescue people are misguided in their belief that it is better to kill then allow an animal to be adopted. He points out how shelters will have empty cages yet complain they are overwhelmed with pets. (I have seen this firsthand.)

This is a MUST READ for all shelter workers, directors and anyone who cares about animals. Unless we overcome the antiquated notions of how to run shelters we will continue to slaughter our stray pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!
This is a great book. I encourage everyone to read it, along with Winograd's first book, Redemption. These books really will change your entire way of thinking about animal sheltering because so many things that we have been "taught" by the shelters for decades is completely wrong.

It is disgusting and disturbing to find out what is really going on in America's shelters and at the largest animal welfare organizations. But, now that we know, it is equally as inspiring to know that many compassionate people are working hard to change the landscape. No Kill is inevitable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Less Ranting, More Reason
Although I despised Redemption (it's message was deeply buried under the author's ire), I wanted to give Irreconcilable Differences a chance to be the book I wanted - one that gave more information on the virtures of "no kill" than on the evils of "everyone else." I'm glad that I did!

A series of essays on what has gone wrong with animal "sheltering," this book makes a much better argument for the no kill movement. The arguments are succinct, compelling, and largely free from the distracting hate-mongering of Redemption. It is also more comprehensive, touching on additional issues such as transports (finally acknowledging that the location of potential adopters matters ;), breed bans, etc.

Although Winograd is still all about waging war on traditional shelters, he does differentiate in this book between those who suffer from compassion fatigue (a well-documented malady) and those who simply don't care. There is hope and inspiration in THIS book for ALL those who want to end the killing of homeless animals.

If you resented Redemption (despite believing in the No Kill Equation), give this book a read with an open mind. It could be the inspiration you were hoping for. If you haven't read either book and are curious about no-kill, skip Redemption and start here.

4 stars rather than 5 because it still has a major flaw: no citations. You can NOT "quote" others and include data without referencing your sources and be considered credible. No wonder this book is self-published - a publishing house wouldn't touch it. For this reason, it can never itself serve as source material. Also, Winogad reiterates his comparison of those biologists working to eradicate introduced species (which have the ability to decimate native species and fragile ecosystems) to Nazis and racists, which is just plain idiotic.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential
While this volume does have some of the same information as does this author's earlier work, "Redemption," there is much updated data.I consider both this work and his earlier one to be probably the 2 most important books I've read (and I've read a lot).We all are obligated to help, in every way we can, the others in this world that they did not create but that we seem intent on destroying. ... Product Description
Even people who live with cats and have good reason to know better insist that cats are aloof and uninterested in relating to humans. Janet and Steven Alger contend that the anti-social cat is a myth; cats form close bonds with humans and with each other. In the potentially chaotic environment of a shelter that houses dozens of uncaged cats, they reveal a sense of self and build a cultureā€”a shared set of rules, roles, and expectations that organizes their world and assimilates newcomers.

As volunteers in a local cat shelter for eleven years, the Algers came to realize that despite the frequency of new arrivals and adoptions, the social world of the shelter remained quite stable and pacific. They saw even feral cats adapt to interaction with humans and develop friendships with other cats. They saw established residents take roles as welcomers and rules enforcers. That is, they saw cats taking an active interest in maintaining a community in which they could live together and satisfy their individual needs. Cat Culture's intimate portrait of life in the shelter, its engaging stories, and its interpretations of behavior, will appeal to general readers as well as academics interested in human and animal interaction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST read
This book is a wonderful combination of intelligent information and a loving tribute toward our warm, furry companions and intimate friends. The entire book is the sign of personal, cognitive, and emotional experience that leads to the raising questions about cats' existence as sentient beings. The book clearly establishes the fact that our furry friends are capable of emotional expression and their sensitivity is not a matter of mere affect but an aspect of growing awareness. The wonderful point this book makes is that to be appropriately sensitive to other beings' way is to experience them as real, breathing, and living entities. This book ultimately gives a direction by showing that the wonderful bridge of connectedness of human and other beings is possible through direct and deep experience. It is wonderful to realize that compassion is the way to learn and love. ... Read more

Product Description
The ASPCA National Shelter Outreach Program estimates there are 4000-6000 animal shelters in the United States. As the U.S. moves toward reducing the number of animals euthanized in its shelters, access to informed medical care and sound management procedures becomes increasingly critical.

Veterinary schools have recently begun offering courses in shelter medicine. This premier text, dedicated to the field of shelter medicine, is a welcome addition to veterinary literature. This text will prove helpful to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other veterinary health professionals seeking job opportunities outside of the traditional veterinary practice, research, and industry venues. Shelter professionals will also want this reference text in their library.

In addition to issues of epidemiology, Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff, also addresses issues like feral cat programs, basic sanitation, shelter design, cruelty investigations and euthanasia. This book is the first ever to involve principles of herd health management in companion animal species in shelters. ... Read more

There are lots of statistics for all types of animals, including exotic pets that occasionally show up at shelters. This is a desk reference that should be available at all shelters, for both veterinarians and their staff, as the title alludes.

Product Description
Elizabeth Hess, a journalist and former art critic, walked into the Columbia Greene Animal Shelter in upstate New York looking for a new dog. Touched by the animals' plight and the dedication of the workers, she began to volunteer at the shelter on a regular basis. In Lost and Found, Hess brings you behind the scenes in this thorough examination of the day-to-day workings of the shelter. From the weekly adoption days, when families come to find a new dog or cat, to investigations of animal abuse and a thrilling puppy mill raid, we come to know both the animals and their caretakers on a deeply personal level. With a keen eye for detail and profound emotional insight, Hess dispels common myths about shelter animals and captures the boundless compassion and courage of the people who comfort and defend them, especially during their desperate efforts to find homes for the animals, lest they be put to sleep. A vivid portrait of a world many of us are blissfully unaware of, Lost and Found is "a must-read for every pet owner" (Seattle Times). Amazon.com Review
For some people, animal shelters seem dark, desperate places. All terrified barks and frightened hisses, the shelter is the last stop formany an animal on what has too often been a painful journey. For others, the shelter is a place of hope, where the perfect dog or cat waits to be adopted. In her time spent volunteering at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, author Elizabeth Hess discovered that shelter life couldn't be defined in such simple terms. In this "subterranean animal culture,"life is a "complex mix of people and animals, emotion and ideology ... where life and death decisions are made as regularly as coffee."

Hess, an arts journalist who has written for theVillage Voice and the Washington Post among other publications, first visited the shelter toadopt a dog for her daughter. A "series of ramshackle buildings and a shabby trailer, surrounded by a few chickens and a couple of contented cats," the Columbia-Greene Humane Societygrounds were humble at best. But what Hess found inside the shelter inspired her towrite Lost and Found: Dogs, Cats, and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter. Fromthe dog kennels and the cat rooms to a puppy mill raid and rides in the shelterambulance, Hess introduces innumerable animals and humans who will inspire, educate, andbreak your heart. With more than 20 million animals ending up in shelters each year in theUnited States alone, Hess's demand to rethink our relationships with domestic animalscouldn't have come at a better time. All I can say is that reading this book literally changed the course of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too good to miss
I recently ordered this book from Amazon- I think I shop more online than in stores lately!- and it is a great book to read, I actually owned a well-loved copy of it but at some point I misplaced it, so I thought I'd get another copy.I have six pets, all rescues, and I wish more people understood the reality of shelters.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book!
love this book. its super easy to get into which makes it really hard to put down. shows a lot of truth of the sheltering world and would be a great book for everyone to read to help understand the reality of pet over-population and euthanasia

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing insight to those who are abandoned
If you love animals and root for the 'underdog' (no pun intended) - this book will have you cheering, tearing and running to your local animal shelter/rescue:not only to adopt the poor souls who were considered, by another, as unwanted - but also to devote time & talent to finding good homes for the wayward.

It is a honest portrayal of a very real situation in this country: the overpopulation of pets.If you hesitate or waver on 'spay & neuter', read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting; Highly Recommended
Lost and Found is an eye opening and heart-felt book that looks at the inner world of an animal shelter.

For years Elizabeth Hess volunteered at an extremely humane animal shelter in New York. In this book she describes in detail, the inner workings, the day to day operations of the animal shelter. Many of the people that work in shelters, do so strictly for the love and welfare of the animals. This shelter, like many others is short on money and staff, but long on abandoned and surrendered animals. She describes in detail the many myths and misconceptions people have about shelter pets --they are not animals with behavior problems; a good percentage are purebreds.

More than 20 million animals end up in US Animal Shelters each year. Many of the cats and dogs (and some rabbits, ferrets, birds etc) came to the shelter from loving homes, mostly because their owners were no longer able to keep or care for them. As the author put it, "when a crazy dog arrives at the shelter, there is usually a crazy owner at the end of the leash".

I had volunteered at our local no-kill shelter for several years, and found most of what the author says to be true about the staff, animals , and the individuals who adopt and surrender animals. In my opinion, shelter animals often make the best pets. Every cat we ever adopted from the shelter was so grateful to be with us, and showed their love and affection daily, in return for a second chance at life.

My recommendation -- read this book and --think about adopting a shelter pet, and saving a life at the same time. You will be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl in the Office
Owl in the Office is in a series called Animal Ark. The Animal Ark Series is about Mandy Hope, a veterinarian's daughter, who helps her mom and dad in the clinic while solving problems with her best friend, James Hunter.

Mandy and James stumble upon a baby owl that fell from a tree. The two friends take it to Animal Ark, Mandy's parents' veterinary clinic. After the owl's check up, Dr. Emily Hope (Mandy's mom) James, and Mandy take the owl to the sanctuary where it canrecover from the fall. Once inside, they realize the sanctuary needs money, FAST. Mandy and James decide to raise money for the sanctuary by having the Grand Novelty Pet Show. If the show is successful, the sanctuary will keep running. But if the show isn't successful, Betty Hilder, the owner of the sancuary will have to give the animals away. But if people don't want them, they will have to be put down. Can Mandy and James save the sanctuary?

I love this book because it's about animals and mysteries. So, if you like animals or mysteries or even both, then I would recommend this book and series. I love this series, especially thisbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best animal ark book!
This is a great book for animal lovers! When Mandy and her friend James learn that the animal sancuary is going to close because of money problems, they organize an event to save it! This is probably the best book in the Animal Ark series!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites
The animal shelter in Welford has to close down because they don't have enough money to keep it open. Mandy and James have to find a way to raise money for the animal shelter's rent so the animals will be able to continue living at the shelter until they find homes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down (unless I was tired)
I thought the book was really good.I liked Blackie the dog, because he always stole cupcakes and cakes!I always like a book with a happy ending like this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars low budget fundraising only
i was sadly disappointed by this book. While these are wonderful suggestions for organizations who don't need to raise much money to succeed, humane and animal rescue groups have hit a whole new level of need that this book can do nothing for. What I expected was a business oriented approach to fundraising large amounts of money to support businesses involved in rescue. What this book provides are suggestions for nickel and dime fundraising. If that's your goal, great book.If you're looking to provide fundraising for serious rescue organizations, this is useless.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundraising for animals
This is a great book that gives a lot of ideas to raise funds for animals that need our help

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for animal rescue groups
For rescue groups or anyone wanting to raise funds for animal-related events, Funds to the Rescue is an excellent resource. Various events are broken down in level of difficulty, planning time, upfront costs, and how many volunteers would be needed. It also provides a wide variety of activities from fun to more sedate gala-type events, allowing you to customize the event to your groups' personality. In all, it's an excellent investment for rescue and animal organizations needing to raise funds on a tight budget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rescue takes money!
This book contains lots of practical ideas for fund raising that can be used by animal advocate groups newly organized or well established. Some can be adapted to your own circumstances or situations, but this book serves as a springboard for more and more possibilities. It is a valuable source of information. ...
