Product Description
PlotEddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"Personal DetailsCollection StatusIn CollectionIndex10Read ItYesLinksAmazon USProduct DetailsLoC ClassificationPS3601.L335F59 2003Dewey813/.6Amazon.com Review
Part melodrama and part parable, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven weaves together three stories, all told about the same man: 83-year-old Eddie, the head maintenance person at Ruby Point Amusement Park. As the novel opens, readers are told that Eddie, unsuspecting, is only minutes away from death as he goes about his typical business at the park. Albom then traces Eddie's world through his tragic final moments, his funeral, and the ensuing days as friends clean out his apartment and adjust to life without him. In alternating sections, Albom flashes back to Eddie's birthdays, telling his life story as a kind of progress report over candles and cake each year. And in the third and last thread of the novel, Albom follows Eddie into heaven where the maintenance man sequentially encounters five pivotal figures from his life (a la A Christmas Carol). Each person has been waiting for him in heaven, and, as Albom reveals, each life (and death) was woven into Eddie's own in ways he never suspected. Each soul has a story to tell, a secret to reveal, and a lesson to share. Through them Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs.

Albom takes a big risk with the novel; such a story can easily veer into the saccharine and preachy, and this one does in moments. But, for the most part, Albom's telling remains poignant and is occasionally profound. Even with its flaws, The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a small, pure, and simple book that will find good company on a shelf next to It's A Wonderful Life. --Patrick O'Kelley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Five People You Meet in Heaven
I haven't finished it yet, but I really liked the beginning. Mitch Albom has a way of getting the attentions of the readers of his books. I couldn't stop reading the first couple "chapters" until I found out what happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history of a great park in grew up with 1952!
Fasinating book! Great history of the Youngstown, Ohio area during the start-up of the city as it rapidy grew during the 1800's through 20th century! Anyone with a desire to learn more about what Yougstown was about during the boom years should purchase this book, the history of Mill Creek Park, and Steel Valley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, interesting trip back to Idora Park!
Another fantastic trip back down the amusement park midway, courtesy of Mr. Jacques. This well researched and colorful book manages to chronicle the life and times of Youngstown's Idora Park - without reading like your typical history lesson. Filled with hundreds of pictures, this book is a must read for any amusement park enthusiast.Although I have never been to Idora, or even Youngstown, this book put me right back on Idora's midway and in the front seat of their infamous Wildcat and Jack Rabbit roller coasters.

Mr. Jacques' book also includes many unique behind the scenes stories and anecdotes from countless interviews and local archives.Personal photos and individual recollections of time spent at Idora Park take the reader back to a time when the traditional amusement park was the highlight of our summer days.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have reference
Anyone who lives in and around Youngstown, Ohio and those who are devotees of the amusement park tradition in America will find this attractive book to be both informative and nostalgic. The Last Ride... is an intelligent, intriguing look back through time to the park's opening in 1899 through to the fire which sealed its fate! The book is beautifully and thoroughly illustrated with copious photos and other interesting items; including a summary list of the events, groups, bands, etc. who were part of the park's history. This book is a must for everyone who's ever set foot in the park wither during its glowing years or during its decline.

Product Description

The Haunted Mansion is one of the most popular and beloved attractions in Disney theme park history, and can be found in each Magic Kingdom Park around the globe. This newly updated book—as it is of vital importance to make sure that fans can read about the latest updates—brings the Mansion’s inhabitants to an afterlife like never before.

The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies illustrates how the Mansion’s 999 “grim grinning ghosts” moved from sketches to reality, evolving from earliest story concepts through adaptations and changes as it moved into each of the parks, to the very latest ideas for show enhancements.  This book also confirms and dispels the various myths and rumors that have surrounded the mysterious Mansion since its opening. And now new history has been added as the attraction continues to evolve.  This updated edition now includes photos and text of the new “Mysterious Staircases” and “Glowing Eyes in the Wallpaper” effects that have been added, as well as the re-concepted attic scene, which includes the history of Constance the bride and the several husbands who have lost their heads (literally) over her.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Won't Find This Anywhere Else!
If you like the Haunted Mansion ride, this is the perfect book for you. This book goes over the history of the ride, the story of the movie, and a detailed description of every facet of the Haunted Mansion experience at the Disney Parks.Great layout, easy to read, yet full of details you won't get anywhere else. The price for this book is a bargain compared to what you'll get between the covers.(and don't worry about the movie, which wasn't that great... the book does not spend a whole lot of pages on it, but acknowledges it nonetheless as it should).Don't hesitate.Buy this book now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets from one of my favorite attractions
I was excited to learn secrets and details from one of my favorite Disneyland attractions. But I also found it fascinating to learn the differences from the other versions in the various Disney Parks. I didn't realize that they created different story lines for the different Mansions or even the placement inside the Parks.I'm quite the Disney aficionado and love to learn things about my favorite place, I get even more thrilled when I find out something I didn't already know.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, was I found the chapter based on the Haunted Mansion boring. I liked the movie okay, but I really didn't care how they made all the special effects possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigger pictures, less text.
For under $15 dollars this was a great purchase and I have no regrets- but I believe the book would be truly perfect if more of the pictures were doubled in size and the text was trimmed of some verbage.

There are times in this book when the text refers to a detail of a drawing- but the drawing in question is printed so small on the page that you can hardly make out the line work. The primary appeal of Disney films and rides to me is visual- I would love to just pour over a two page spread of each preliminary sketch of the mansion.I know that I'm one extreme of the fan spectrum but when a beautiful illustration is printed at 2 inches by 1 inch to allow the writer 'beautiful exposition' it gets frustrating.

Don't get me wrong, the text is full of information, I just wish it had been more "pop-up video" style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for true Mansion fans
Despite content from the lackluster movie, the original version of this book had wonderful details, photos and illustrations. The added content of the updated versions is spotty and probably not worth buying for those who have the original unless it can be obtained cheaply.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Haunted Mansion
Having been to Disneyland this past year, I really wanted something to keep that would help us to relive our journey to the States. The Haunted Mansion was one of our favourite rides, and the book is full of amazing photos and descriptions of how the ride came to be and the production that went into the rides and movie. If you are looking for an inside peek at The Haunted Mansion, that is also a beautiful book to treasure, I believe that this is a great investment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the love of Pirates.
This is an amazing book, just like the one written about The Haunted Mansion ride. This book is a must for the Disney Park fanatic, but may bore the casual reader.Yes, it could be enjoyed by all, but again, it is more of an inside look to who designed and built the ride. Rather than just fun little facts, this is an indepth look at the creation and genious of the ride.It is a great read that the Disney Patrk Fanatic won't be able to put down until finished.I have spent manu a nights reading until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. Awesome and informing. Just buy it and decide for yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some book contents is deliberate Fraud
Hi - I have purchased several copies of this book (Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies) for evidence because within it are several pages that contain deliberate concocted facts and lies about the history of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride attraction. Written by Jason Surrell and signed off by Marty Sklar this book was used with their defense during legal proceedings of a lawsuit over the Pirates of the Caribbean movie (Royce Mathew vs Disney). I welcome all communications - I have a website with details pinpointing the concocted facts and lies found within this official Pirates of the Caribbean book. Google for more info etc..

5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be boarded!
Know this first:I'm a huge fan of all things Disney, especially POTC the ride.

Imagineer Surrell's book is very well-done. This is one of those (along with his earlier work on the Haunted Mansion) that I go to again and again, like watching a favorite movie or listening to a favorite album. Maybe I'll notice on the 50th reading ONE MORE DETAIL I somehow missed...
I especially enjoyed the look at the other parks' version of the ride. Rock on, Jason!

Con: Woulda liked it in HARDCOVER.

Now, as with any OTHER topical subject, some of the info goes out of date the day the book is published, and will continue to "go stale". The 2nd, 3rd, and even talked-about 4th movies are, of course, not included. The much-publicized ride rehabs are not either. This is the same with Jason's earlier Disney's Haunted Mansion book (a good companion piece, by the way). That said, the HM book goes off into a hopeful description of the actually-miserable HM movie, touting it as the best thing since Bela Lugosi. This was written well in advance of the actual public release of the HM movie, I guess, so they were gambling the public would love what turned out to be a huge embarrasment. ( When I need cheering up, I sometimes imagine HM Director Minkoff at what I hope is his new day job, asking people if they want to add a cherry turnover to their order for just 50 cents more ). Okay, here's your soapbox back.

They shouldn't have pushed the HM movie so hard in THAT book.

Not so in THIS book: Because they "got burned" on the HM movie, there's a decidedly less-throat-cramming push for Curse of the Black Pearl, which, of course, in hindsight, they could have laid on thicker, now that the movie has generated some kind of Star-Wars-level cultural shift.

Buy the book. You know you want it.

I know I want more books on CLASSIC Disney attractions, and I only want 'em writ by Jason Surrell. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter loves it!!!
My daughter just loves all the background information. She's very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated version now available!
As of November, 2006, a newer, updated version of Mr. Surrell's book is now available! Look for the version with the compass rose in the upper right corner of the cover.

Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This is a review from my 10-year-old daughter, who really liked this book:

This is such a great book for me, even though I'm rather young and most people my age don't enjoy this type of thing, but I sure do!Ever since I was tall enough to ride the Disney mountain rides, I've loved to ride on them. Then when I accidentally found this book at the library I took it home and read it.I loved it!! I enjoyed all the interesting details about the rides. I especially liked how Jason Surrell added how people thought up the rides, things they thought of doing but didn't (I found some of them rather funny) and all the quotes he put in this book. I also loved all the details.I rate this book 5/5 and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the art of Disney Imaginaneers.Plus, it is a definite E ticket book!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK GREAT PICTURES
Really a great read for all Disney Lovers! This book can be found in the parks for much lower then people are selling it for on Amazon. Visit the [...] for better prices and free shipping.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great focus on one of Disney's best traditions
This may be less in-depth that his pervious books but Surrell still does a fantastic job covering all the Disney mountains. I get he was held back by page length as in-depth coverage like his previous works would have meant a book twice as long. As it is, Surrell still does a great job on covering the development of the various mountains in all their seperate parks. It's fun reading the differences between them that you may have missed before and how they've improved over time. The best part is an in-depth examination of the planned Western River Expedition and how and why it fell apart but paved the way for Big Thunder Mountain. It's also nice to focus on the "lesser" mountains like those at the water parks and Disney Seas. The in-depth look at Expedition Everst does seem longer than other chapters but shows how the Imagineers are capable of magic still. Overall, a must for any Disney fan to appreciate these great rides all the more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bought from seller
Unfortunately was not entirely happy with the outcome of the purchase, not because of the product itself but because it was bought for a birthday present. I paid for express delivery (1-5 days) and received the item after 4wks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book!
As a huge disnerd, I am clearly biased in writing this review, however have to say that I loved it!

This book is chocked full of great photographs and full of interesting information on the conception and creation of the Disney Mountain Range!
A must for any collector! ... Read more
