3-0 out of 5 stars Too little not enough
If you are considering buying this book for your students or child first read the editorial review here by the American Library Journal. In a nutshell that is the essence of the book and it's unfortunate shortcoming. Hence the book might serve best as a book for an older student who wants to just learn about the diverse American Indian experience. The book is a little dry and probably isbestfor a young student who really enjoys reading and does not need much other further stimulation in the form of visual enhancement. Since students do enjoy being read to , even when they are older, it may be useful for a teacher to read this book , one chapter per lesson to enrich the students understanding of other cultures. There are questions and answers and expert commentary at the end of only some chapters to help the student fully grasp the ideas explored. The stories themselves are their own reward and fully entertaining but the presentaion is a little dry. This book is good for reports and teacher led reading. A students active imagination is a must forthis book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An informative primer, if a bit dated and naiive
One has to give credit to Ms. Nicholson for taking on the daunting task of giving an introduction to not simply Mayan and Aztec religion, but to Central-American mythology as a whole.Nicholson draws upon a variety ofsources to present a guide to the ancient cultures, the rituals and tenetsof the various religious systems, and a fair sampling of the art, handcrafts and architecture that make the ancient cultures of CentralAmerica so fascinating.Even so, Nicholson seems to have a tendency toforce her own ideologies on these belief-systems, characterizing the godQuetzalcoatl as a Christ figure, for example, or by comparing his warriorcult of the jaguars to the Knights Templar. At other places, Nicholsoncomes across as naiive, especially when her conclusions are compared withthe results of contemporary archeological findings. Her premise that theMayans were fundamentally peaceful and opposed to the idea of humansacrifice is discredited by strong evidence to the contrary. And herconclusion, for example, that the recumbent Chac-mul statue at the templeof the warriors at Chichen-Itza bears a hollow area in order to collectrainwater is laughable in light of recent findings which conclusively provethat its true purpose was to catch the hearts of victims of human sacrificeduring blood/fertility rituals.More reliable data on the Mayans can befound in Michael D. Coe's "The Maya." ... Read more

Product Description
Mythologies offers illuminating examples of the workings of myth in the structure of societies past and present--how we create, use, and are guided by systems of myth to answer fundamental questions about ourselves and our world.

Almost all of Mythologies, originally published as a two-volume cloth set, is now available in four paperback volumes. These volumes reproduce the articles, introductory essays, and illustrations as they appeared in the full Mythologies set, and each includes a new Preface by Wendy Doniger.

This volume gathers eighty articles on mythologies from around the world.A section on the Americas and the South Pacific covers myths of native Americans, from the Inuit to the Mesoamericans, about such topics as the cosmos, fire, and the creation of the world.Essays on African mythology range from the 266 basic signs of West Africa to themes such as twins, the placenta, and masks. The final section, covering Celtic, Norse, and Slavic traditions opens with an overview of the Indo-Europeans and concludes with an essay on the religion and myths of Armenia. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A history of native art!
I wanted to learn about the western hemisphere art as a whole and not country by country and that's precisely what I found in this book. Well detailed designs and astonishing information such as poems, myths, symbols explanations... unfortunately, some countries -as Ecuador- are not represented and that's a pitty because they have many motifs to show to the world. Anyway, I think this is a must in decorators' or art historian's library! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Text Book, not Good Story Book
If you are looking for text book that outlines native american mythology and categorizes it by region, this is the book for you.A word of caution though, it is extremely wordy and overly scholarly. It almost seems like the author had a thesaurus next him.Honestly, it took 30 pages before it I had to put it down or fall asleep.I never would have guessed that stories passed down through oral tradition could be worded so dull! The stories are outlines, with little to no background, and the author does nothing to put them into perspective. But again, if you are looking for a text book that outlines the mythologies and categorizes them by region or ethnicity, this is the book for you.
Unfortunately I bought this one thinking I was going to get the stories and how they related to the times and the people.I was obviously disappointed in that regard. If you are looking for a book that focuses on the stories and people, American Indian Myths and Legends by Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library is a little more up the alley. ... Product Description
Anyone interested in mythology and legends will enjoy these stories which have been passed down orally for generations by the Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest. They reveal Pueblo customs and traditions as well as the ceremonial aspects of Pueblo religion. A character called Grandfather, the fictional narrator of these stories, embodies the collective wisdom of the Pueblo Indians, the attitudes about universal dilemmas and conflicts in human life that developed through many generations. Some of the stories are realistic; others involve the supernatural. Some evoke the initial contact between the pueblos and the Spanish conquistadors. There are also tales of the joy and bitterness of interactions between parents and children, husbands and wives, and humans and spirits. Rites of passage and 'vision quests' often enter into the characters' attempts to live in harmony with nature, other humans, and spirits. Lessons on how to live, of growing up, marrying, parenting, and growing old sometimes emerge straightforwardly in these stories, but more often, readers are left to draw their own conclusions. These stories, collected by the Teresa Pijoan since she was eight years old, actually came from many different storytellers, some of them childhood friends of the author. She had heard several versions of each story before writing it down and she often used elements from one version to fill in the parts missing from other versions. She then showed her drafts of each story to members of several different pueblos and weighed their comments before putting each story in its present form. ... Read more

I had a look at several books from this series in the reference section of my library. The information from all meshed with that I found in other sources. It's all introductory material, as would be expected from such a series, but includes beliefs of many groups rather than focusing only on the most well-known ones.As such I've new things to look into that I hadn't yet come across in several weeks of research. The cross-referencing in entries was useful as well, pointing at even more new things. ... Product Description
The Lenape, or Delaware, are an Eastern Algonquian people who originally lived in what is now the greater New York and Philadelphia metropolitan region and have since been dispersed across North America. While the Lenape have long attracted the attention of historians, ethnographers, and linguists, their oral literature has remained unexamined, and Lenape stories have been scattered and largely unpublished. This catalog of Lenape mythology, featuring synopses of all known Lenape tales, was assembled by folklorist John Bierhorst from historical sources and from material collected by linguists and ethnographers?a difficult task in light of both the paucity of research done on Lenape mythology and the fragmentation of traditional Lenape culture over the past three centuries.Bierhorst here offers an unprecedented guide to the Lenape corpus with supporting texts. Part one of the "Guide" presents a thematic summary of the folkloric tale types and motifs found throughout the texts; part two presents a synopsis of each of the 218 Lenape narratives on record; part three lists stories of uncertain origin; and part four compares types and motifs occurring in Lenape myths with those found in myths of neighboring Algonquian and Iroquoian cultures. ... Product Description
In October 1931, Dick Tracy made his debut on the pages of the Detroit Mirror. Since then America’s most famous crime fighter has tangled with a variety of protagonists from locations as diverse as the inner city and outer space, all the time maintaining the oral high ground while reflecting American popular culture.

Through extensive research and interviews with Chester Gould (the creator of "Dick Tracy"), his assistants, Dick Locher (the current artist), Max Allan Collins (who scriptedthe stories for more than 15 years), and many others associated with the strip, Dick Tracy as a cultural icon emerges. The strips use of both innovative and established police methods and the true-to-life portrayals of Tracy’s family and fellow cops are detailed. The artists behind the strip are fully revealed and Dick Tracy paraphernalia and the 1990 movie Dick Tracy are discussed. Dick Tracy’s appearances in other media—books, comics, radio, movie serials, "B" movies, television dramas, and animated cartoons—are fully covered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing mythology collection
I suppose that some of the work in this book, one of a 13 volume set written between 1916 and 1932 (reprinted in the 1960s, has been changed by more recent scholarship, but there is still nothing to equal this fantastic achievement. The set includes not only the more familiar myths such as Greek and Roman, but pretty well succeeds in its goal to include all of humanity. The text is extremely detailed but very readable; none of the turgid prose so often associated with academia. The volumes contain numerous illustrations, both in the text and as plates (mostly black & white.)
One of the most useful parts of the set is the final volume, an extremely detailed index, which allows the reader to pursue a theme, or even a topic as specific as the significance of belts, across all the volumes. The individual volumes do not have their own indices, but the tables of contents are fairly detailed. The books appear to have been issued without dust jackets.
