Best, most complete keys to west coast marine algae
This is the algae bible for the west coast of North America.Abbott and Hollenberg's "Marine Algae of California" is without question the best taxonomic guide to algae of the region available anywhere.

This book contains taxonomic keys, summaries of the geographic ranges, biology, andecology of algae.It also has excellent line drawings that show details ofthe thalli of algae, as well as details of the characteristics thatdistinguish one alga from another.

This book is a "must have"for anyone who is interested in learning the algae of the west coast ofNorth America.

Donald Kapraun has created a very valuable small handbook for the identification of the benthic Rhodophyta of the coastal waters of the Carolinas. The book is concise with easy to use keys and excellentdescriptions of taxa.His diagrams of whole structures as well as crossand longitudinal sections are easily understood. Awesome Book!
I would have never believed that algae could be so interesting. All you need is a good book and an awesome professor(HPU) obsessed with algae(e.g. diatoms)! Ha ha! I'm absolutely hooked and loving it! My only thing that I don't like is that the pictures are not in color and I really feel that in this case color is very important for visualization.:)

A terrific reference ofor learning more about phytoplankton and seaweeds
This outstanding textbook on "algae" provides a solid reference for learning more about the diverse photosynthetic forms that occur in aquatic habitats. Graham and Wilcox summarize a diverse range of topics for the major Divisions, including taxonomy, cell structure, biology, reproduction, life history, and ecology. It has an excellent section on coccolithophorids, including the steps in coccolith formation. It also includes practical uses of algae and chapters devoted to phytoplankton and seaweed ecology. The lack of color photographs may be attributed to the inclusion of numerous images taken with electron microscopes (the only way to "see" most microalgae) and probably to the fact that this book is not intended to be a field guide. However, it makes a perfect complement for learning more about and understanding phytoplankton and seaweeds that you may identify under a microscope or in the field using any of the widely available field guides.

I haven't found many good books on algae that have come out in the pastfew years.This book is a great one with lots of information and pictures. It would be better if some of the pictures were in color, instead of allof them being in black and white.Some algae are indentified by color socolor pictures would be helpful.It has really good information on diatomsalso which is nice. ... Review of How to Know Freshwater Algae
This is a fantastic book for those interested in identifing algae to a Genus level. I work as an aquatic biologist for a private microbiological testing and consulting firm, and I use it everyday. The book offers very good discriptions and lots of helpful illustrations. The one thing I don't like about the book is that it fails to include size ranges of the organisms. I would highly advise anyone who deals with freshwater algae on a regular basis to pick up this book. It will definately come in handy!! ... Read more
