As someone who has an eating disorder, and has actually worked with Nancy, this book is absolutly useless. There are many other more helpful books out there, I would recommend something by Zerbe.

Product Description
Learn how to get sober--and stay that way

Getting and staying sober provides a special set of challenges for professional people--physicians, lawyers, corporate CEOs, accountants, and others--who drive themselves to achieve and succeed in high-pressure surroundings. Managing Your Recovery from Addiction applies business approaches and ideas to the process of planning, implementing, and carrying out programs that really work for professionals in their first year of recovery. This unique self-help book provides guidance to impaired executives and professionals seeking recovery through inpatient and outpatient care, setting strategies for managing conflict, dealing with changing emotions and moods, and developing a solid spiritual program.

Managing Your Recovery from Addiction helps professionals develop both short- and long-term programs for dealing with the challenges of maintaining sobriety. The book is based on the authors' extensive experience treating impaired business personnel in a variety of settings, including the Caron Treatment Centers and Lifeworks of London, England, an internationally recognized addictions treatment center. Their rational, scientific approach complements ongoing counseling and other treatment approaches to help keep the professional's career on track, saving the recovering individual--and his or her employer--significant time and money due to lower productivity, arrested organizational development, absenteeism, and other problems associated with professional level addiction.

Topics examined in Managing Your Recovery from Addiction include:

a unique view of the 12 Steps for business personnel
the dynamics of managerial addiction
essential information to prevent relapse to active addiction
coping with relapse
basic tasks and fundamental recovery steps
setting and tracking recovery goals
recovery stages
10 tasks to recovery
conflict management strategies
spiritual development
addictions treatment
and much more!

Managing Your Recovery from Addiction concludes with the O'Connell Dysfunctional Attitude Survey (ODAS). This book is vital for recovering executives and professionals and is an important resource for addictions and mental health treatment agencies that serve a professional population. It's equally helpful for employee assistance program (EAP) personnel who regularly refer professionals for addictions treatment ... Read more

Product Description

The first general consumer book ever on the powerful, award-winning, scientifically proven new system of intervention that is turning the recovery field on its head.

Historically there have been few options available for individuals seeking help for treatment-resistant loved ones suffering from substance abuse.

Coauthor Dr. Robert Meyers spent ten years developing a treatment program that helps Concerned Significant Others (CSOs) both improve the quality of their lives and to learn how to make treatment an attractive option for their partners who are substance abusers. Get Your Loved One Sober describes this multi-faceted program that uses supportive, non-confrontational methods to engage substance abusers into treatment. Called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), the program uses scientifically validated behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's substance use and to encourage him or her to seek treatment. Equally important, CRAFT also helps loved ones reduce personal stress and introduce meaningful, new sources of satisfaction into their life.

When compared to Johnson Institute and Al-Anon intervention techniques, CRAFT resulted in two and three times the number of loved ones willingly engaging in an alcohol treatment program. Compared to a 64% success rate for CRAFT, the Johnson Institute approach resulted in engaging only three out of ten drinkers and the Al-Anon approach engaged barely more than one out of ten drinkers.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book for loved ones of people who use
This is a great book, based on very good research about what works with families and loved ones.Well written, it includes practical tips for how to respond based on empirically-based treatments, not clinical hunches. When someone asks me about how they should respond to their partner, spouse, friend, child, parent or coworker whose struggling with substances, this book is what I recommend.Indeed, I try to keep a few extra copies on hand that I can provide to people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Love One Sober
I found this to be an excellent book to assist your love one to want sobriety or to be free of addiction.Actually, the title of the book is a misnomer because no one can get another person clean and sober. But you can set up the conditions, for which the book gives excellent examples, on how the substance abuser will want to stay sober. One example given, when the husband comes home late and has had too much to drink, the wife tells him she loves him but dosen't like his behavior when he is drinking so she's going out with her girl friend and shewill see him in the morning. That stops the endless arguments with someone who is drinking, resulting in the husband and wife not speaking. And the husband has to make his own supper and spend the night alone.

Most of the examples are husband and wife and involve alcohol, so if it is a different addiction, or not with a husband and wife (parent and son for example), one can easy translate the dynamics to a different situation. It can also be used with someone with a gambling addiction. It's all about approaching the problem in a more positive way.The substance abuser isn't feeling good about himself and he already knows how you feel,so lecturing or arguing with him or her isn't going to help the situation. In fact, it may make it worse, reinforcing negative behavior.

This is one of the best books I've read on on how to handle people you love that have a substance abuse or other addiction problem.I'd give it five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars AA without Jesus
This is an excellent resource for those who have a problem drinker in their lives, and who want to approach a change without relying on religion. With common sense and concrete plans, SOBER offers its readers a thoughtful and easy to follow program which can return sanity to an insane situation. Co-dependents are guided gently but firmly to the recognition of their own contribution to the problem, and given ways to make the drinker responsible for his/her own actions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Loved One Sober
Highly recommend this book if you are struggling with this issue. It's not an easy read, and it's difficult to see yourself in some of the scenarios, but it provides good examples of ways to change the dynamics of a relationship. The most important message is to take care of yourself so you don't go down with the ship.

3-0 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzzz
