Product Description
Gun politics in Canada is controversial, though less contentious than it is in the United States. Civilian firearm ownership in Canada, like most British Empire countries, developed out of the centuries old common law right to keep firearms for the purpose of self-defence.[citation needed] Controls on civilian use of firearms date from the early days of Confederation, when Justices of the Peace could impose penalties for carrying a handgun without reasonable cause.Criminal Code of Canada amendments between the 1890s and the 1970s introduced a series of minor controls on firearms. In the late 1970s, controls of intermediate strength were introduced. In the mid 1990s significant increases in controls occurred. A 1996 study showed that Canada was in the mid-range of firearm ownership when compared with eight other western nations. Nearly 22% of Canadian households had at least one firearm, including 2.3% of households possessing a handgun. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In "Social Discredit" Janine Stingel exposes a crucial, yet previously neglected, part of Social Credit history - the virulent, anti-Jewish campaign it undertook before, during, and after the Second World War. While most Canadians acknowledged the perils of race hatred in the wake of the Holocaust, Social Credit intensified its anti-Semitic campaign. By examining Social Credit's anti-Semitic propaganda and the reaction of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Stingel details their mutual antagonism and explores why Congress was unable to stop Social Credit's blatant defamation. She argues that Congress' ineffective response was part of a broader problem in which passivity and a belief in 'quiet diplomacy' undermined many of its efforts to combat intolerance.Stingel shows that both Social Credit and Congress changed considerably in the post-war period, as Social Credit abandoned its anti-Semitic trappings and Congress gradually adopted an assertive and pugnacious public relations philosophy that made it a champion of human rights in Canada."Social Discredit" offers a fresh perspective on both the Social Credit movement and the Canadian Jewish Congress, substantively revising Social Credit historiography and providing a valuable addition to Canadian Jewish studies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent research dull read
The book is a well written well search analysis of the history of theSocial Credit movement through the developmental years of Canada's currentpolitical climate.

The topic is quite interesting but Stingel's writingstyle is sporadic. It goes from embracing to monotonous. If you can getthrough the dry periods you will be quite well informed about Canada's darkpast of anti-semitism.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and welcome contribution to Judaic studies.
In Social Discredit: Anti-semitism, Social Credit, And The Jewish Response, Canadian social researcher Janine Stingel aptly surveys the virulent, belligerent, anti-Jewish campaign undertaken in Canada by SocialCredit before, during and after the years of World War II. While mostCanadians acknowledged the perils of race hatred in the wake of theHolocaust, Social Credit continued to intensified its post-war anti-Semiticcampaign. By examining Social Credit's anti-Semitic propaganda, and thereaction of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Stingel details their mutualantagonism and explores why the CJC was unable to put a stop SocialCredit's blatant defamation. When Social Credit eventually and graduallyabandoned its anti-Semitic trappings, the CJC began to adopt the assertive, activist public relations philosophy that was to make it an effectivechampion of human rights in Canada. Social Discredit is highly recommendedreading for students of 20th Century Canadian political and social history, and Judaic studies. ... Read more
