Product Description

For Albertans-and for that matter, all Canadians-the name of this western province is inseparable from the maverick attitude it connotes. Alberta conjures images of honest, backbreaking work, free from the restraints of propriety and status found in older settled lands. As with the province, the names of its cities and towns, villages and hamlets reveal attitudes, values, history and geographical connections.

Focusing not just on basic facts, The Story Behind Alberta Names fleshes out the personalities, using humorous anecdotes, the context of people's lives and careers, and the relationship between individuals and the places named for them. ... Read more

A contemporary of Cecil Burgess said that no one in Canada was superior in architectural scholarship. Cecil Burgess was professor of architecture and resident architect at the University of Alberta between 1913 and 1940. A similar collection of writings and talks has not been published about Canadian architecture for this period. ... Read more

Product Description
A groundbreaking study of urban sprawl in Calgary after the SecondWorld War. The interactions of land developers and the local governmentinfluenced how the pattern grew: developers met market demands andoptimized profits by building houses as efficiently as possible, whilethe City had to consider wider planning constraints and infrastructurecosts. Foran examines the complexity of their interactions from ahistorical perspective, why each party acted as it did, and where eachcan be criticized. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars gets the basics right, doesn't always focus on most important details
This book explains how sprawl happened in a mid-size Canadian city: in essence, a combination of municipal restrictiveness and municipal permissiveness.

Calgary was restrictive in telling developers how to build (especially in already-developed areas).Paralyzed by fear of traffic and of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) resistance to infill, the city's zoning and planning officials limited density, favored cul-de-sacs over grids, and designed commercial streets for high-speed traffic instead of pedestrians and commerce - all policies that made development oriented towards cars rather than people. To give a couple of examples: single family subdivisions were designed to have 22 people per acre, or about 5-6 units- too few to make quality bus service economical. And in the 1960s, the city's comprehensive plan stated that streets were for moving traffic, and "emphatically not to accommodate business."

On the other hand, the city was quite happy to annex suburban land and let developers build on such land.Where there was no NIMBY threat to worry about, giving in to developers was the course of least resistance.

Foran addresses these basic issues adequately.I do wish, however, that he had focused more on design issues (e.g. why wasn't development more pedestrian-friendly in new areas without NIMBYs) and less on issues only tangentially related to sprawl such as the details of utility pricing. ... Excerpt: Wild Roses is a Canadian television drama series, which debuted January 6, 2009 on CBC Television. Originally titled Cowgirls, CBC requested the change to Wild Roses after testing the title. The show was officially cancelled by the CBC on April 22, 2009 after only one season. Reruns of the show are seen during the summer, starting June 19, Friday nights at 9:00 (9:30 in Newfoundland) on most CBC Television Stations. The series focuses on the conflict between the McGregors, a family of wealthy oil developers residing on Montrose Ranch, and the Henrys, a widow and her three daughters living in the neighbouring Rivercross Ranch. Prior to the series, Rivercross used to belong to the McGregors, but was given to the Henrys by the now-deceased head of the McGregor family. The current head of the McGregor family, David, resented this decision and wants to take back Rivercross. Shortly before the beginning of the series, David McGregor provided a loan to the Henrys to help them operate their ranch with the promise to repay $10,000 back monthly. As the series begin, the Henrys have defaulted on roughly $60,000 in monthly payments, and David tries to foreclose on the property. The show is primarily shot at The Window Studio as well as on location in Calgary, Alberta, and surrounding areas within a one-hour drive such as Bragg Creek and Bearspaw. Common shooting locations around Calgary include Stephen Avenue, Inglewood, Bankers Hall Towers and numerous locations in the downtown core. One of the major shots commonly seen in the series is the overlooking Rocky Mountains and rolling foothills, a signature landscape associated with Calgary. The opening theme song is Scottish singer, KT Tunstall. "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" was a hit single and relea... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21081732 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up to date
This book was indispensible for my recent travels through Alberta. It contains detailed descriptions of all the best places to go, including some great small town festivals that I would of otherwise missed. The book also has many hikes included, mostly in the Canadian Rockies. I budgeted to spend around $50 a night for motels, and found that this book described many good choices in this price range but also includes campgrounds and more expensive places. Overall, I found it to be very current, not only for restaurants and the like but also coverage of issues such as overcrowding in the national parks, which I found an interesting addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars Plus!
This book and its companion volume to British Columbia are undoubtedly thebest travel books I have ever used. I just returned from a two-month tripthat took me to the Calgary Stampede, through the Rockies, up toYellowknife and through British Columbia to Vancouver. Alberta is anamazing place to visit and by buying this book I was able to enjoy it allthe more. The author has obviously done his homework and describes theregion in a colorful style but also with an incredible amount of detail. Byusing these books I managed to plan my trip before leaving home, even downto where I wanted to eat. The other guide I had with me was rarely used. Ialso found local information centers sending me along well worn touristpaths, and while this book covers all of that side of Alberta it also ledme away from the masses to areas of equal beauty. I highly recommend thisbook to anyone planning a trip to Canada!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't travel without it!
This was an excellent guide for family travel. It provided first rate information on dinosaur adventures in the Red Deer region to Waterton NP to the Canadian Rockies including Banff and Jasper and all points in between.Includes tidbits of local history and written in such a user friendlymanner that by the middle of our three week adventure we were fondlyrefering to it as Mr. Moon, as in, what does Mr. Moon reccommend fordinner. If you are traveling to the Canadian Rockies, the British Colombiaguide by this publisher makes an indispensable companion to the AlbertaGuide.

5-0 out of 5 stars An A+ Guide to the Canadian Rockies
I couldn't believe all the information that this book contained. It told us of all the great spots in Banff and we didn't miss a one. This was our first time there, but because this book was top notch, we're planning ourreturn within a few months.I would highly recommend this book to anyonetraveling in the Canadian Rockies. It's better than the best!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was outstanding!
This handbook was packed with great spots to stop. There were many places listed that the AAA guidebook missed, and all were fantastic. The book was sectioned well, breaking up different areas into day-trips.If you are going to Alberta for the first time, this is a MUST BUY! ... Read more
