1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The only redeeming feature here is the detailed description of the Iditarod race. That admittedly interesting aspect must be what made this book an award-winner, for I sure can't see any other reasons. The plot is predictable (even laughable), the characters cardboard, the dialogue wooden, the "romance" sophomoric, and the detective does very little actual detecting. My journey through Sue Henry's work ends here at the first checkpoint.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have an Alaska Mystery
I enjoyed this book because of the Iditarod race setting. However, I also find it hard to believe the book won awards.I had trouble keeping the names straight.A list of the characters at the front that I could have referred to would probably have been a big help.

Shortly before reading this book I had watched the 2008 race on NGC (I think it was NGC).This book helped fill-in much of the information about the race that was missing in the TV series. The TV series made it seem much easier than it is.

It was a pleasant and interesting book, but it isn't a book I couldn't put down.Still, I will probably continue reading the series since I bought six of the Alaska Mysteries at the same time.Perhaps the other books will be "page turners".

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mystery
Sue Henry has done a superb job of bringing Alaska to those of us down here in the lower 48 States, with a mystery spin.

3-0 out of 5 stars cold blooded killer running across Alaska
I picked up this book with the hope of finding a new author for a mystery series I could enjoy.I was not very impressed with the character development, though, so I doubt I will stick with the series.

That said, this book was entertaining in that it took me to places I have never been, and to an event I knew little about except for vaguely remembering it featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports many years ago.The drama of identifying the killer was a bit weaker than I thought it would be, and the motive for the killings was very weak. But it was a fun ride through the snow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe this won awards
Info about the race was interesting, but as a mystery, it was clunky and labored. ... Read more

46. A naturalist in Alaska (The Natural history library)

4-0 out of 5 stars For Love of Wilderness
I came upon Murie's "A Naturalist in Alaska" after having read two of his other books, "The Wolves of Mt. McKinley" and "The Grizzlies of Mt. McKinley," and I found "A Naturalist in Alaska" to be the most readable of the three. In fact, if one is interested in reading Murie's descriptions of the lives and interrelationships of the lynxes, wolves, bears, wolverines, foxes, Dall sheep, caribou, and even the haymice that frequent the far flung state that calls itself "The Last Frontier," but must select only one of Murie's published works, then "A Naturalist in Alaska" is the book to choose.

"Wolves" and "Grizzlies," while very rewarding to anyone curious about the real behavior of wild creatures, are perhaps best described as dispassionate and objective records of Murie's extensive observations of those animals in their native, largely unmolested habitat. In "A Naturalist," however, Murie gives vent to his admiration for these creatures and for the land they inhabit. While never stinting on his objective observations, Murie interweaves his objectivity with a sense of wonder, and his descriptive writing is nearly as good as a camera lens for portraying the rolling tundra, the meandering glacial rivers, the rocky spires of the Alaska Range, and, of course, the creatures that live and die in this magnificent setting.

The sociability of wolves with others of their pack, their ingenuity in forcing sheep down rocky bottoms where they can be outrun, the apparent games eagles play on wolves and sheep, and even the amazing ingenuity of the tiny haymouse are all skillfully portrayed in "A Naturalist" Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this book is its ability to teach and entertain equally. The reader will enjoy the vivid descriptions of the land and its denizens while learning about the almost limitless interactions of the wild creatures with one another and, sometimes, with humankind.

If there is any weakness in "A Naturalist," it is that there is some overlap with Murie's other books, "Wolves" and "Grizzlies," in that some of his field observations seem to be repeated. Of course, if one is coming to Murie for the first time, this repetition will not be apparent, and I actually enjoyed re-reading some of the antics observed in the members of the East Fork wolf den, so any criticism I have concerning the repetition is very mild indeed.

Who will find reading this book to be time well spent? Those interested in Alaska in particular or vast wilderness areas in general should find it rewarding. Those interested in the habits, traits, activities, and personalities of wild creatures that are only beginning to adapt to the spread of humankind into their pristine land will also enjoy Murie's writing.Aspiring writers should find inspirational examples of descriptive writing here.Do not, however, seek to find adrenaline-raising stories of harrowing encounters between hapless humans and ravenous bears or crazed wolverines, for that is seldom real life, and Murie's books are all about real life (although there are a couple of stories of some near encounters that make the reader wonder how he or she would have reacted in Murie's place).

I account my own time in reading this book to have been well spent, and I believe that you will, too.And if reading "A Naturalist" leaves you feeling a little humbled at your place on this earth, then I believe that you will feel as Murie himself felt and that he would be pleased with the success of his book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for travelers to Denali park
Adolph Murie was a naturalist who spent most of his career, and most of this century working in Denali park in Alaska. I heard about him from the tour guides while taking the bus tour through the park. He is their paton saint. The book tells various stories about the various animals Murie studied. It wonderfully captures the sense of that great park and the wildlife that dwells within. After reading his book, I'm inspired to make my next trip to Denali a camping trip where I sit on a high ridge with my binoculars and camera and watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars An informative take on an old story
Shelley Gill takes a twist on the Goldilocks story with this charming little book that tells a story while giving a little lesson on the habitats and ways of the polar, grizzly, and black bear who are trying to find homes that are "just right". There is no Goldilocks, but lots of fun facts and knowledge about Alaska and its creatures. The illustrations are lively and colorful and the information is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different slant on those lovable bears.
We picked this book up in the Anchorage airport gift shop in 2001 on our way to visit our Alaskan relatives in Nome. It is a delightful and very informative book about bears for both adults and children, although the focus is on children.

This is not the traditional Three Bears story. Alaska's Three Bears is about the three kinds of bears one might find in that great state and North America: the grizzly, the polar bear and the black bear. The opening sentence begins, "Once upon a time...", but in an box below the story line on every page is valuable information about bears in general and each of the three species of bear in particular.

The first information paragraph states: "There are three species of bear in North America. Grizzlies used to roam from Ohio to California, now the big brown bears have been driven north onto the last pieces of remote land. Black bear can still be found in forests throughout the U.S. but only in Alaska and Canada can you find all three bears; the grizzly, polar bear and black bear, living in the wilderness we call bear country." Did you know all that?

The book tells how each bear chose the place where he wanted to live. The polar bear liked the cold, snow and ice so he stayed in the far north. The grizzly liked the frolicking river with its salmon, the roots he could dig and animals he could chase. The little black bear finally chose the forest with its bug-filled stumps and places to hide. In the end, no matter how far each roamed, they could always find their way back home.

At the back of the book is a Teacher Resource Guide with suggestions on how to use the book. There's a page of dos and don'ts for traveling about in bear country, and also a lovely page of colorful covers of other titles available from Paws IV published by Seattle's Sasquatch Press.
Published in 1992, this book remains a popular one for youngsters of all ages. Though far from being a youngster, I find myself taking it off the bookshelf from time to time to reread the valuable information it contains and to enjoy the magnificent illustrations by Shelley Gill.

5-0 out of 5 stars An adult's opinion
This is another book we read to our students at our summer reading program. They loved it. They thought the drawings were terrific, and especially liked the borders on each page. They enjoyed learning more about bears, and they thought it was a neat twist on the original story of the three bears. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who wants to do a unit on bears - it's a book that successfully merges entertainment and educaational components.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Northern Wonderland gets a great book
Alaska is a beautiful place which I had the pleasure to visit for an extended amount of time. I discovered that Alaska has a lot going for it, and this book will show you and your students what.

The "Portrait of America" series is a sensational and easy to understand introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Alaska" installment is very good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "Culture" section is quite good, but I wish it had dealt more with the older civilizations that had existed before the 18th century.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators. ... Read more
