Product Description

The ancient practice of adoption has changed significantly through history. In colonial America, parents adopted out their unwanted children—those who were "rude, stubborn, and unruly"—to other families. Today, Americans go abroad looking for children to adopt, and have adopted more than a quarter million internationally.

Adoption: A Reference Handbook, Second Edition not only traces the development of expert thinking about adoption, it also looks at both sides of the latest controversial issues. Should adoptions be open or closed? Should the government regulate adoptions more closely—or less? This updated second edition offers an international perspective with a new chapter on how countries outside the United States provide adoption services. This work is an indispensable resource for those thinking about adoption or researching its history.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unauthorized Mention in This Book Angers Adoptive Mom
An adoptive mother I know rather well (PJ Whiskeyman) was stunned to stumble across this book on the Internet recently and discover herself referenced by name (albeit, with wrongly added punctuation in her first name).

She was stunned -- and infuriated -- because the author never asked permission to mentioned her by name in the work. This flagrant lack of literary ethics shames the author.

While any victimized mother -- adoptive or otherwise -- surely has the right to convey her own story in her own words (as Whiskeyman has), that same right is not automatically extended to a third party, especially not to one who could not be troubled to obtain verification of the facts by contacting said mother.

In failing to do so, Moe further victimizes the victim, and like the scam adoption agency Yunona did, ends up making money (via sales of this volume) by wronging others.

I do not know Barbara Moe. Neither does PJ. We both agree, however, that Moe should apologize to PJ and her husband for mentioning them by name without having obtained the requisite permissions and/or waivers.

Shame on the editor and publisher of this volume, as well, for not seeing to proper pre-authorizations prior to publication.

Furthermore, any reference made without authorization should be removed from any future editions of this book.

Product Description
One of the most critical contributions that child welfare professionals can provide for children who enter care is to preserve their connections with their brothers and sisters. Children who come into foster care or are adopted often are separated from existing or future siblings. Approximately 70 percent of children in foster care in the United States have another sibling also in care (Shlonsky, Elkins, Bellamy, & Ashare, 2005). For a variety of reasons, many of these sibling groups are not placed together. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my speed; your mileage may vary.
Wayne Willis, This Is How We Became a Family (Magination Press, 2000)

I've been reading a lot of kids' books about adoption recently, getting them out of the library and trying to figure out which ones we want to buy for our own kid. This is the most recent of them, and while I admire what it sets out to do, there's something off in how it goes about doing it.

The book presents its situation in straightforward language, but it seems almost cold, informative but distant; the language is age-appropriate (this is aimed at the preschool set), but the tone isn't in some way I can't quite define. While I can't say that underinvesting the language in emotion is worse than overinvesting same (quite the opposite, in fact), this one seems to go a bit too far in the right direction, if that makes any sense. And, to be technical about it, the pictures (photorealistic, but with a primitive streak) creep me out. I doubt they'd have that effect on a kid, but who's going to be reading the book to the kid, eh?

I'd suggest getting this one out of the library and giving it a going-over first if you're thinking about buying it. ** ½

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a must buy for adoptive parents
If you adopted your child through domestic adoption, and the birth mother was a young unwed mother- then this is the story for you.It gives a brief overview of both sides of the story- very good for opening the field for questions from your child. The only part that I did not like was how it said how the parents "cired, cried, cried" because they could not give birth to their own child, and the birth mother "cried, cried, cried" because of her situation. This does not take away from the rest of the story however.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal experience always captivating
Every journey undertaken by adoptive parents pre- and post-adoption is unique and interesting to read about, and this book is no exception. All adoptive parents can relate to the highs and lows the author and his wife experienced until the happy day arrived and the family was formed. The paintings are lovely, especially that of his daughter on the swing. I am happy for the Willis's and for all adoptive parents who have a similarly happy ending to their journey.
Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compassionate Look at Adoption
This is a book based on real life experiences. The author is an adoptive parent himself who recounts for the reader the emotions of an unwed mother and a childless couple, both before and after adoption takes place. It isa realistic look at the highs and lows of those involved in the process, the love at the center of giving and receiving the newborn, and the happyending for all. Charmingly painted by the author from personal photographs, this is a wonderful book for children and adults alike, one of particularvalue to those adopting or considering adopting.A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delicate subject dealt with beautifully!
What a wonderful book!Every attorney who handles private adoption should give this book to new parents.Any obstetrician's office where a child is making important decisions about her own life and that of a baby she iscarrying would do well to make this resource available. My husband and Iare giving a copy to all of our family members who have adopted. We havealso checked to be sure that the local crisis pregnancy center has a copy. The book can be used on so many levels. In addition to those listed on thefly-leaf, I think it could be very useful in helping the young friends ofadopted children understand one way that families can be made.Dr. Willis'artwork is also very expressive, and supports his words in such a way thatenables the story to be told in an easy-to-understand manner.Hischaracters' faces and body language do as much to show their sadness andjoy as any of the written text. The painting of his daughter on her swingmakes a great concluding statement that assures Dr. Willis' readers thatindeed this family will live "as happily ever after as 'ever after'ever really is." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Please read the LA Times article on Chinese adoption
I read a revealing article in Sept 2009 on Chinese adoption and the agencies that have failed to detect a major child traffiking ring. It's a sad story that has to be shared.

1-0 out of 5 stars China changed its policy because of folks like this!
China now prohibits single parents to adopt. I guess they finally got tired of all the liars such as those depicted in this book who had to swear they were not lesbians. Now these children have far fewer adults who are allowed to adopt them. The children belong to China, folks. They get to make the rules!

Plus this and all other books never depict families who already have children or are adopting special needs children. Come on Amazon!! Search harder for accurate depictions.

If you got stuck with the book like I did, simply make Andrea Lee's name Andy and put on a moustache!

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not like it at all!
There were some inferred values that I do not care to teach my children. Also, too busy...too much going on, on each page!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, minus the fantasy
As an adoptive parent that stayed at the White Swan Hotel during the adoption of our daughter I purchased this book expecting somewhat to encounter a little bit of the 'twee' sentiment that is sometimes attached to internation adoption.I was pleasantly surprised and enjoy ready of the different families that adopted on this particular journey.

I have absolutely no issue with the same sex couple in the story, as there was a time when China allowed gay couples to adopt. What it does point out to our family is that love can cross all barriers, race, gender, age, marital status and one very large ocean!

Families are built in many different ways and we want our children to understand and appreciate that.

Well written and sweet without being sickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
We were shocked to find that one of the four couples adopting the Chinese babies was a female same-sex couple.Regardless of your beliefs, this was an inaccurate depiction as China does not allow same-sex couples to adopt their children. Also, it is a CHILDREN'S book and I don't think we will we be ready for a discussion on same sex marriage with our little girl. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book !
Other reviewers have said it, but I'll say it again: Everyone's adoption experience is different, and no book will match everyone's needs. But this is a beautifully illustrated and nicely written book about adopting a baby girl from abroad. The parents in the book fly away to a tropical location to bring home their baby, but the story works for any "we had to travel far to get you" type of adoption. It's a simple and sweet story that my 4 year-old daughter loves. It's even prompted her to ask questions about her birth. For those of you with a secular outlook, this book also avoids any religious overtones. You'll probably find other adoption books that you like, but I think you'll be happy with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic adoption tale
This is a lovely tale suitable for young children that explores the wonders and excitement of how a family is formed through adoption.Told through the eyes of the adoptive parents, it spreads nothing but love and warmth about the adoption process. While the story focuses on an international adoption, it is applicable to any type of adoption.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great adoption story
This story is a favorite with our children. It is excellent for families who have adopted internationally as it depicts driving to the airport, flying to your child's birthcountry, meeting foster parents, etc.The illustrations are beautifully done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story that relates to international adoption.
My wife found this book after we brought our daughter home from Guatemala. This story really fits the international adoption process. I recommend this to any parent who is adopting internationally!!!

Product Description
An illumination of adoption and its ability to transform lives as they come together to form a family.

A heartwarming collection of true stories that weave a rich tapestry of the adoption experience from many different perspectives: birthmothers, adoptive parents and grandparents, and adopted children and adults. These inspiring stories reveal the challenges and joys of the lifelong adoption journey including: the pain of letting go of a child; the wonderment of meeting "your" perfect child halfway around the world; the challenges of adopting an older child already set in his ways; watching a child's potential flourish in a loving environment; sibling rivalry and eventual bonding; integrating a child's culture into a new multiracial family; finding peace in the search for identity, roots and unanswered questions; and feeling the happiness and love that comes from forming a family.

While each story is unique, the emotions conveyed are universal: love, loss, hope and joy.

The collection will appeal to everyone affected by adoption, regardless of their phase in the journey.

Stunning black-and-white photos are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and informative collection of stories from the adoptive triad
Born in Our Hearts is an uplifting and informative collection of stories from the adoptive triad and family, including birthmothers, adoptive parents and grandparents, and adopted children and adults. Adoption is viewed through the lenses of a virtual rainbow of participants, in different circumstances and situations, yet overall it results in a very positve and encouraging view - with twists and turns unlike any other. While prospective adopters (both international and domestic) will enjoy the variety of adoption journeys, the viewpoints of the adoptees and birthparents are especially informative and will be of interest to parents who have adopted as well as those considering adoption.

5-0 out of 5 stars Born In Our Hearts - Stories of Adoption
Born In Our Hearts is a deeply honest book.A collection of adoption views written by the adopted children, the birth mother, the adoptive parents and grandparents. This book provides an insight and a true understanding into their world. It will leave you with a tear in your eye.

A MUST read for anyone dealing with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Born in Our Hearts--A Touching, Honest Look at Adoption
As an adoption professional, I found this book to be a wonderful blend of perspectives.Contrary to popular opinion, adoption doesn't speak with one voice. The wide range of issues raised in Born in Our Hearts illustrates that quite well.As an adoptive parent, I identified with so many stories and so many feelings-the over-the-top excitement, the nail-biting anxiety, the deeply-rooted fear and sadness, and the incredible, indescribable joy.I'd recommend this book to anyone whose life has been touched by adoption or anyone who hasn't but wants to know more about the life experience of an adoptive parent, an adopted person, or a birth parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endearing and heartwarming!
This book is so inspiring. As part of a family touched by adoption, I totally enjoyed these stories. Each one is better than the next! This is truly a book that will evoke many emotions; joy, fear, love, disapointment, and hope. Even if you have not been touched by adoption, this book speaks to everyone's heart. This is a great book to give as a gift or to share with a book club! The most important lesson to learn from Born In Our Hearts is that families are made from love, not biology! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for siblings
We adopted twins from Vietnam and this was a great book for 3-4 year old sibling that waited a year for them to come home. I just substituted words that applied to our circumstances. Hard to find a book like this for siblings of adoptive babies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Except for One Line
I got this book to read to my 4-year-old son, who will soon be getting a little sister from Kazakhstan. Although the story is about China, it covers the issues that apply to most international adoptions and is generally well done. My main concern is the following: "Matthew wasn't too sure it was wonderful... His friend Jason had a little sister, and she was a pain." I recognize that children have these concerns. However, my son seems excited about getting a sister, so I don't want to plant the idea in his head that she might be "a pain."

Also, be aware that Matthew stays with his grandparents while his mom and dad travel to China. In our case, we will bring our son with us to Kazakhstan, so this part doesn't work for us. We don't want our son worrying that we will leave him behind.

For our family, Waiting for May is a better fit. It is also about adopting a girl from China, but the big brother travels with his parents. He also has a great attitude and talks about how he can't wait to have a sister.

Product Description
This is a study of representations of adopted Koreans in Korean popular culture between 1991-2001. The study is carried out by examining and reading how adopted Koreans are represented in four feature films and four popular songs. After having given the cultural background to adoption in Korean tradition, the history of international adoption from Korea, an account of the development of the adoption issue in the political discourse and the appearance of adopted Koreans in Korean popular culture, the first reading takes up the gendering of the colonised nation and the maternalisation of roots, drawing on theories of nationalism as a gendered discourse. The second reading examines the issue of hybridity and the relationship between Koreanness and Whiteness, related to the notions of third space, mimicry and passing. Linked to studies of national division, reunification and family separation, the third reading looks at the adopted Koreans as symbols of a fractured and fragmented nation. The fourth and last reading focuses on the emergence of a global Korean community with regards to theories of globalisation, diasporas and transnationalism. ... Read more
