Product Description
Acid rain has changed the face of the Adirondacks, created political tensions between the Northeast and the Midwest, and served as both a harbinger of global climate change and a "fire drill" for public- and private-sector responses to environmental crises. The history of acid rain research is a striking case in which a large-scale and long-term environmental problem was addressed in part through scientifically motivated changes in public policy.

In the 1970s, acid rain was viewed as a simple problem that was limited in scope and characterized by "dead," fishless lakes. Scientists now have broader insights into the processes by which acid rain sets off a cascade of adverse effects in ecosystems as its components move through air, soil, vegetation, and surface waters. Written and designed to appeal to both scientists and lay readers, this book is a landmark example of scientific communication that provides a comprehensive scientific history of the phenomenon, from its discovery to the full understanding of the scope of its effects and the ultimate responses that have mitigated some of the damage to the region's lakes and forests. ... It further widens the subject to look at trace metals. It includes papers on the impact of deposition on soils and forests and the recovery of the natural environment. Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is about war, as waged by the ultra Liberals and the far Left and about the insidious propaganda tidal wave they have launched. This book is about the hype and scare stories on the environment and climate change, issues that are extremely difficult for the average citizen to assess.

Everyday we are besieged with thousands of messages. TV is terrible. Magazines are particularly egregious, stuck in the face of every housewife and teenager at every check out station in the country. These offer secrets on everything: looks, stress, sex, health, environment, etc.

In addition you are given a one-sided message about each new issue, namely that big government is the answer. And the press usually provides unlimited, un-researched and un-skeptical support. Serving as a shill for such issues is not journalism. It is a corruption of the profession. It is prostitution, a selling out of the values of honest journalism for the adoration of the so-called elite, and the hope of ultimately becoming one of these so-called elite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Acid Satire
This book offers a fresh approach to the global warming issue. Satire is used throughout this book, some of which is rather acidic. Hence the title of this book, which is not about the acid rain issue. Satiric wit is used to attack and deflate the tidal wave of gloom and doompredictions from the warmers.
Half of the essays are fairly technical in nature, but are written as a science reporter would write for his educated, but not necessarily technical audience. Half of the essays are more on personalities and events.
This book is about the hype and scarestories on the environmental and climate change issues. It is about the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. This book, in part, is a modest political history covering the past two presidential elections and some of the events in between. Politicians covered include Albert Gore Jr, Tom Daschle and John Forbes Kerry in the USA, and Jean Chrétien in Canada.
Seven of the essays are on the Invasion of the Gorons. "These are the aliens from planet Gore. One of the first Earthlings they captured was Albert Gore Jr, who has risen to become the Head Goron." While the HG's political future looks pretty bleak today, the Goron name lives on.
There are several key chapters in this book.
Chapter 1 "Introduction", lays out the genesis of the Gorons, their infiltration of the far Left and their obsession with power and regulation.
Chapter 2 "The Invasion of the Gorons: The Global Warming issue", takes on the temperature analysis by the HG.
Chapter 10 "The Hockey Stick, the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warming Period", addresses the effort underway to replace the conventional assessment of the temperature profile over the past 1300 years-warm period, followed by a cold period, then another warm period-with the Hockey Stick profile.
Chapter 12 "The Invasion of the Gorons: The Kerry Enigma", gives eight options on the true identity of John F. Kerry.
Chapter 14 "Conclusions: Why I am a Skeptic on the Global Warming Issue", cites four critical assumptions the warmers make, with none of them being confirmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acid Rains on Liberal Propaganda
Before I read the book, I assumed it would be filled with technical jargon that I would not understand. It turned out to be just the opposite.I was intrigued to learn so much about global warming, and what a political football it has become.I was also delighted to learn so much about the history of our planet. In particular, about the Medieval Warming Period and the Little Ice Age, and the effect that it had on the people that lived during that time, and to the earth itself.I also increased my knowledge about California and its struggle with power (nuclear, electrical, etc.) and the politics involved with it.The author took me through a unique journey including having a better understanding about global warming. He has convinced me that more scientific knowledge has to be sought out before we can jump to any conclusions about it.He made me understand that there are weaknesses in it and in the Kyoto Protocol, and that more research must be done before we sign on to this plan.Overall, I found the book to be enlightening, and I enjoyed the author's sense of humor and satirical writing. It was a quick read, entertaining and educational. There is no question that it was delightful, I had fun reading it!

This text addresses two main questions: how can we explain the fact that governments take different positions on common problems?; and why do some states push for international regulation whilst others hold back? It also explores the variance in implementation and compliance with international agreements. The book reports findings and observations from a major study focusing on the efforts to establish international regulations to cope with the problem known as "acid rain". It offers in-depth case studies of ten European countries as well as a comparative analysis searching for patterns and conclusions. ... Read more

Product Description
Acid rain is rain or any other form of precipitation which is unusually acidic. It has harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and buildings. Acid rain is mostly caused by human emissions of sulphur and nitrogen compounds which react in the atmosphere to produce acids. In recent years, many governments have introduced laws to reduce these emissions. This book examines new research results from around the world. ... Read more

With the European Union's increasing powers its environmental legislation has grown rapidly. This study investigates the dynamics of the "Europeanization" of environmental policy and concludes that the domestic environmantal policies of relatively "green" member States are actually hardly affected. The text focuses on policy making in the field of air pollution and acidification between the (former) European Community and one Member State, the Netherlands. Included in the text is a concise history of EC environmental policy, an explanation of the theories of sovereignty, European integration and power-dependance, and final commentary on the future of environmental policy in the European Union. ...
