Product Description
Set at the fictional school of Eckleton, the story centres around the house of "Kay's", the riotous boys therein, its tactless, unpopular master Mr. Kay, and Fenn, the head boy. The story features practical jokes, fighting between the boys and with the locals in the nearby town, politics amongst the houses of the school, a trip to an army-style camp, and plenty of cricket and rugby.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong cover!
I must confess I have not bought or read this book but I was astonished when browsing through Amazon.com I came across it. The publishers have chosen for its cover a portrait of Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós, as painted by the great Joaquín Sorolla! I do not know about people outside the Spanish cultural mainstream, but I believe that a book about the laughable adventures of a semi auto-biographical journalist would be better introduced by a picture of Wodehouse himself, and not by the image of one of Spain's most thoughful and profound writers of all time. A shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psmith is the best!
I love Psmith, in all his forms - there are four novels with Psmith and this is one of the best - but they are all great. He is one of the best characters created by Wodehouse.

Now, I wanted to recommend two books here for you, one more Psmith book that is great:

Leave It To Psmith: A British Humor Classic

And this one - a book by Wodehouse about Wodehouse - and its interesting because he was a journalist and knows about newspapers, its very funny and entertaining too.

Not George Washington: A British Humor Classic

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great novel
This book is an absolute laugh. Psmith is always unique but I really loved this one. My favourite is Mike and Psmith. I'm a wannabe journalist so I really sympathized with Psmith's need to get himself a good story. Buy the omnibus comrade, you'll never regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psmith
Very funny. I love how Wodehouse uses language. If you like that sort of thing and you haven't read Wodehouse before, shame on you. If you do and you've read other Wodehouse books, well, it's like that.

1-0 out of 5 stars amazon service sucks
I ordered this book along with another one(PG Wodehouse's - forgot the name). It was meant to be a gift, so i needed it within 5 days or so, i paid additional shipping charges for it. 3 days later , i get an e-mail saying "item will be shipped when available". What the heck ? I ordered that particular book only because i got an e-mail from amazon recommending the book. I called up the customer service, they seem to have no clue. So I had to cancel my order, purchase ot from another website(way more reliable)

This is the last time i am buying directly from amazon. Even if I use amazon, i am going through a local seller. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "With a hey-nonny-nonny and a hot cha-cha."
If you understand the title of this review, you have already been introduced to the unequaled comic talents of P. G. Wodehouse. If you don't understand it at all, you need to read this book (especially the dedication).Or, for that matter, any book written by this master of stories written to allow the reader to laugh out loud and revel in that experience. There is just nothing to beat completely submerging yourself in the world of the ridiculous.Bertram Wooster and his gentleman's gentleman, Jeeves, have their work cut out for them with this tangle of situations.Florence Craye is engaged to G. D'Arcy Cheesewright (Stilton to the members of the Drones Club). Then the engagement is off. Then she's engaged to Bertie. Then she and Stilton get back together. Then it all comes apart again and so Bertie must do the right thing and become engaged to her again. While all of this is playing out Bertie's Aunt Dahlia is trying to convince businessman L. G. Trotter to buy her weekly ladies magazine but Trotter is so bothered by tummy troubles that he can't concentrate on anything.A pearl necklace goes missing, Bertie has it in his pocket, how to get out of this mess? And why did Bertie need the cosh anyway? In the middle of all this upheavalBertie can't finish reading "The Mystery of the Pink Crayfish" so he doesn't know whether the butler did it or not. Then, just like the gallant knight of old, here comes Jeeves to the rescue with a charming tidbit learned at the Junior Ganymede Club.

This book is one of my favorites among the stories featuring Jeeves and Bertie. You can't possibly read one of these stories and expect it to make logical sense. No, what you want to do is read one of these stories and willingly leave logical sense well in the background. These stories are simply fun, and funny, and escapist reading at it's very best.I sincerely hope you have experienced the zany world of P. G. Wodehouse.I'll bet he was a wonderful man to sit down and talk to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lived up to its comments
A laugh-out-loud adventure starring a bachelor gentleman and a clever and resourceful valet, the novel epitomized the ironic situation. Though I will probably not remember the story in future years,I still want to check into the other Wodehouse novels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book badly scanned
To be sure, this is one of Wodehouse's best, one that can't be beat on CD. But the Kindle version has apparently been optically scanned and posted uncorrected, so sometimes "don't" appears as "dont", "fiver" as "liver", and "for me" as "forme".

It's tolerable, but Kindle reading should be unfettered joy, not joy with hiccups. Me? I'm looking for another version of this joyful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jeeves saves the day
Bertie Wooster has been summoned to Brinkley Court, home of his Aunt Dahlia and more importantly, her marvelous cook Anatole.Little did Bertie realize that this seemingly innocent little trip would soon become a quagmire of purloined pearls, coshes, star crossed lovers, deep dark secrets of the butlerine nature and absolute hilarity.

Wodehouse has created a marvelous fantasy land of an England that never really was but should have been.It is populated with stately homes, comfortable flats, raucous nightclubs and populated with the most marvelous eccentric characters who manage to get themselves in the most absurd messes that can only be resolved by the incomparable Jeeves.Even by Wodehouse's standards this is a hysterical story, one that will take the reader out of whatever problems their mundane world may hold and take them to the sunlit country house where butlers glide into rooms to solve all problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bertie Wooster sees it throughreview
Wonderful stuff

I'm not gonna say this is the best J&W book (maybe thats Code of the Wooster, dunno) but it is wonderfully entertaining

Spode turns up again, as does (former) Constable Cheesewright

Absolutely delightful stuff. Not a bad place to start with Wodehouse by any means ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Wodehouse Classic Comedy of Manners and Romance
What makes this novel stand out from everything else? Easy: Tremendous wit rendered with perfect use of the English language with not a single wasted word. For those of you who do not want to spend a fortune acquiring this great author, go to project gutenberg online, where a great deal of his work can be downloaded for free as it is in the public domain.

The plot is typical Wodehouse.Set at the estate of the Earl of Montmorte, virtually everyone has a romance crisis which unfolds with great mirth. The best character is the Earl himself, a man in his late 40s who is happiest tending to his garden in his oldest and shabbiest clothes, deceiving the public as to his identity. His and everyone else's romance is in thwart mode due to his sister, Lady Caroline, who wants to decree the marriages of everyone based on her preferences. She is aided by the Earl's son, a great buffoon of a fellow who is a perfect caricature of the worst of the aristocracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars available on Kindle too
I loved this book.It is very light, witty and takes no effort or great concentration. I read it on vacation and think it was perfect for that. It would also be a perfect light reading evening after a stressful day so I will look for more Wodehouse!By the way I read it from a Kindle edition which was easily obtained and much less expensive!

5-0 out of 5 stars lived up to it's expectations
A damsel in distress was fun. P.G.Wodehouse is fun. I was somehow reluctant to read any of his work. I picked this up from a bookstore after much deliberation and because I loved the title.

This novel has all the ingredients that make a book fun and happening and lively. George Bevan, an American composer, falls in love with Maud, the daughter of Earl Lord Marshmoreton. George had a lot of money and is a nice guy and Maud likes him too. But there is a problem. In fact, there are many problems. First is Lady Caroline, Lord Marshmoreton sister, who wants her step son Reggie to marry Maud. Then there is Maud's brother Percy, who does not want Maud to marry an unknown American, a man without a title. Besides Percy had a row with George once in Piccadilly because of which he had to spend one night in jail, not to mention his family's name being tarnished in the newspapers.

But the biggest problem is that Maud is in love with another American called Geoffrey Raymond. Everyone mistakes George with Geoffrey and then what ensues is a comedy of errors and misunderstandings.

All the characters were so lively and colorful, even Percy with his overweight body and his tendency to get into trouble while keeping watch over Maud. Although I didn't laugh out loud at everything, I did have a smile on my face throughout.

I've heard that this is not the best Wodehouse book. But I cannot compare it to others as this is my first. For me, this was excellent.

Oh Mr. Wodehouse! One of the finest witty wordsmiths who ever picked up a pen. When I need a smile, or a lift, or even a roll on the floor laugh I turn to one of the many wonderful works of Wodehouse.
So many to choose from, and each one is from a different period in PG 'Plum' to his friends - life. While my favorite character is Psmith, how can I not enjoy the mutterings of Ukridge, or long to have my life saved from disasters by the likes of Jeeves.
Stephen Fry wrote 'Without Wodehouse I am not sure I would be a tenth of what I am today...his writings awoke me to the possibilities of language. His rhythms, tropes, tricks and mannerisms are deep within me.But more than that, he taught me something about good nature. It IS enough to be benign, to be gentle, to be funny, to be kind.

Product Description
Another collection of Wodehouse stories, only one of which ("Extricating Young Gussie") is a Bertie Wooster story. Reading these stories at the same time as the first volume of the Collected Theodore Sturgeon constantly had me drawing comparisons between the two writers. Wodehouse never wrote fantasy *per se* (that is, Bertie Wooster never encountered a genie or a god in his garden), but in truth his stories were always fantastical. As commentators have said, the idyllic world of young men in spats and authoritative aunts was a figment of Wodehouse's imagination, and never existed at any time in England. I don't think Wodehouse would have disagreed; he knew the power of fantasy. In this volume, he tells one story ("The Mixer") from the point of view of a dog, and one of his habits was to read the entire Shakespeare's collected works every year, and Willy wasn't a stranger to fantasy, either. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Money - Only Wodehouse can make it funny when you don't have it!
As far as our house is concerned, PG Wodehouse this is the best comic authors ever. It's understandable that Stephen Fry, Douglass Adams, and Hugh Laurie all praise him. In each of his books he brings a smile, a laugh, or even a giggle out loud. This was British comedy before Python, (and while different, the use of wit, satire, etc, makes Wodehouse a master). I used to read this book in university, pretending to listen to some lecture. These great literary treasures need to be discovered again by a new generation.Pass this book to someone who has never heard of Jeeves, Wooster, Psmith, Ukridge, Blandings, or Sally.

Our hero Roland Bleke is a chivalrous and polite young man who more often than not finds himself talked into things against his better judgment. He also finds himself regularly falling for pretty girls, usually totally unsuitable to a man of his quiet and simple temperament, at first sight. Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever.

What can one say about one of the funniest books ever written?

Mike, and Psmith, (who is introduced in this book), are two of my favorate characters from PG Wodehouse. There is no loss due to the age of this book, the way Psmith has with words is equally as funny to day as it was when it was written.I even find myself thinking like him after reading a half hour or so.This is a book, and author that should be shared with everyone, and its a tragic if they are missed by people today looking only for some poorly written teenage vampire novel.

Sorry, I just find that Mike and Psmiht will put such a smile on your face, that why would you NOT want to read it?

The eccentric and congenially self-absorbed Wodehousian hero of this novel is Psmith - pronounced with a silent P as in Pshrimp (he finds that his birth name, Smith, is just too dull). Mike and Psmith meet each other and become unlikely friends. This is the first Psmith book, and there are 3 more - each one needs to be read!

This is a wonderfully funny boarding school story, as Wodehouse creates the most delicious `prank' on our hero - but it ends in a great Wodehouse ending!

Make any day better with a enthusiastic portion of Wodehouse's light-hearted legendary fun. Enjoy!

Basically it's a simple and easy choice for you, if you like one Wodehouse story you're going to like them all.

In these economically bleak times its good to invest in a book that will bring happiness to all who read it.Enjoy the hilarious works of Wodehouse - perhaps just what you need!

5-0 out of 5 stars It starts with a crime but its fun on each page!
The first time I heard of P.G. Wodehouse was watching the wonderfulStephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (better known from "Black Adder" and "House") TV series "Jeeves and Wooster". That series put me on to reading as much as I could from this great writer.

The plot turns on a crime - the theft of a gold replica bat. However, the pleasure for readers comes not so much from the story, which is efficiently handled, but in the light authentic, prank filled, hilarious picture of public school life - a place Wodehouse makes us want to be.
