5-0 out of 5 stars Russian fairy tale classic
This book is based on a very famous Russian fairy tale. Certain details of it have been changed. For example, in the original book the first objective Ivan has to meet is capture the fire bird. Here he is supposed to captured a wild bore with golden bristles and silver tasks and her 20 sucklings. This does not change the main message and lesson of the story. The artwork is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars great story for children
This is a very nice story about a guy who was a victim of envy first of his brothers, and then other people at emperor's court but in the end he manages to get the beautiful princess for himself with the help of a little hump-backed horse. This was my favourite fairy-tale when I was little, andrecently I read it again to my baby brother, and he loved it also. ... Read more

In his first inaugural address, Franklin Delano Roosevelt tells the American people that the only thing they have to fear is fear itself. Emma Bortoletti, the 12-year-old daughter of Italian immigrants, already knows a lot about fear. The Great Depression has hit her western Massachusetts mill town very hard, and the president's bold new programs might be making things even worse. FDR addresses her worries and reveals many of his own in an ongoing correspondence that illuminates his -- and her -- abiding faith in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great children's book!
This is a great book about finding a friend in a caretaker. Beautiful illustrations! My sisters and I loved this book as children; it's been out of print for a long time, so I'm always glad to find a used copy in good condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bear and Mrs. Duck
The book seller listed this book as "very Good Condition"I would not say it isin very good condition but rather Good Condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bear and Mrs. Duck
This book isa great book for young children who are nervous about babysitters.Written in clear language, the main character, Nora, reassures her "child", Bear that the babysitter will be stay with him and make him comfortable while she is away.Over the course of an afternoon, Bear realizes Mrs. Duck is very caring and relaxes with her.He is happy to have Nora come back but does realize how happy he had been while she was gone.Good for any new babysitter to read to the children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Only one of the best books ever.... which is not really what I expected. My youngest son, now 3, loves this book more than all of his other books combined - and believe me, that's saying something! Nora, Bear's... uh... owner? companion? mother? little girl?... needs to go to the store, but bear (an animated stuffed animal) has a cold and has to stay home, so Mrs. Duck (a real duck) comes to babysit. Bear is uncooperative at first, but eventually warms up to Mrs. Duck. The drawings are sweet, with an aside or two to the adult audience in the way of a "look" from Mrs. Duck. Nora returns home and all is well. It's a very simple story about an everyday event that really seems to hit home with little ones. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book
The lovely illustrations bring children into the warm and reassuring world of this sweet and gentle story.Everyone would want a wonderful babysitter like Mrs. Duck.Text and pictures bring out the best in each other. The illustrations have exquisite detail--the pictures on the walls, the toys on the shelves--that make the book a delight to return to again and again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, exciting, gripping
A book about dancing rats.Doesn't sound like a sure-fire winner, does it?But this tale of perserverance and determination makes a wonderful and gripping read. The fantasy rat world is only half the story--the other half is the fascinating account of the hard work, training, and innovation of the dance troupe. By the time the Rattoons get to Rat Hollow, you know how very hard they've worked, and you're rooting for their success. Not only was this a fun read, but it was an interesting and eye-opening look at the work that professional dancers put in before they're ready for the Boom-Boom Room.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tail (PUN INTENDED) Of Uncommon Valor...
... uncommon, because the valor is demonstrated by a group of five rat siblings. Each lives out his/her own quirks, qualities, and weaknesses, but more importantly, as a whole, they demonstrate the power of a group united by a dream.Along with all of *that,* it is a rollicking good read, full of adventures and mishaps, with eventual victory, though a surprising one!A terrific book for fourth through seventh graders. ... A perfect book for any holiday with a parade

Harvey was excited when the mayor appointed him parade chairman. He loved parades. Fred did not.

Fred doesn't want to be in the paradeÂ--not in the beginning, not in the middle,
and not in the end. Not on the baseball float, and certainly not dressed as the
founding dog of Bonesport. But Fred loves Harvey, so he wants to make him
happy. And even though Fred isn't in the biggest parade Bonesport has ever seen,
he's proud to play the most important role!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another book about Fred and Harvey, and it was fun to read.
Supposedly the stars of this book, Fred and Harvey, made their debut in another book titled Dog Show. I haven't read Dog Show, or any other book with Fred and Harvey in it. But this book was interesting. I can't say that I loved it. But I'm sure it is one that a little kid will enjoy having read to him or her time and time again. The illustrations were well done, but their style was just not my cup of tea.

The story is about a dog owner (Harvey) and his dog (Fred) that live in a town called Bonesport. The Mayor of Bonesport solicits help from Harvey to organize a big parade for the town, and Harvey agrees to help. Of course, not only Harvey did the planning - Fred helped him quite a bit.

I would have liked the book better if more of the pictures were more involved than just a close-up of Fred shaking his head or Fred chewing on a bone. One illustration reminded me of an old Clint Eastwood movie that was shot in a fake town that looked like a fake town. And there were characters mentioned in the text that we never saw pictures of. Saying this, I think there could have been better coordination between the author and the illustrator in putting this book together. 4 stars! ... Read more

This is a wonderful little book! Not only does it help to squelch monster fears in a sweet way (priceless!) but it is simple enough for an older sibling (ie, 1st grader) to read the book to the younger ones. The mother/daughter monster duo is adorable...guaranteed smiles!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book solved all of our "scary" issues.
I am really shocked.I have tried book after book to help my 4 year old daughter get over the fear of monsters in her room.I decided to give Maggie and the Monster a try.It looked cute and sounded helpful. Thisbook is an unbelievable tool.I can't believe it.We have had the book aweek and my daughter hasn't not cried or complained that their are monstersin her room since. She loves the story and says it is her favorite book. She carries it with her everywhere. What a delightful story that shows thechild with a little encouragement from mom, she can solve her own problemsand feel good about it in the end.Very empowering for children.I am sothankful for this story.I still can't get over the confidence it helpedmy daughter gain. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone but especiallyfor children with nightime fears. My seven year old son even thought thestory was funny and entertaining. He wants to borrow it to share with hisclass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives children the power over their fear of monsters!!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Christmas Stocking- great new Christmas book.
I am always looking for good books with lessons or messages- this is one of those books. The idea of giving is always a good idea. It has many words on the page making it more enjoyable as a read aloud or for older children. It is definitely one of our "read at Christmas time" each year books! Hope you'll give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant holiday story benefits from Bagram Ibatouline's warm and lovely drawings.
A long time ago a poor girl named Claire learns to knit by her mother's side - and knits her Christmas dreams into the wool. An order for six stockings could save her holiday; but on the way she meets a boy even poorer than herself: how can she share her dreams of warmth? A poignant holiday story benefits from Bagram Ibatouline's warm and lovely drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book
I bought multiple copies of this book for neices, nephews, godchildren and young cousins. It's a great antidote to the overly commerecialized Christmas season. The writing is elegant but straightforward, and the illustrations glow.Although it has a strong spiritual message, it is not overtly regligous, so is suitable for all children who celebrate Christmas. ... obody ever listens to Daisy. Her father was chopping carrots. Her mother was talking on the phone. Her big sister was chasing her little brother around and around the kitchen table. 4-0 out of 5 stars Squashed in the Middle With You
Daisy is a middle sibling with a problem. It's not that her older sister and younger brother and her parents aren't interested in her; however, they talk about her and even for her, but they don't listen to her! With all that talk about her, most of it negative, Daisy begins to doubt her own feelings. One day her friend Rosa invites her to stay over night. Not only does Daisy's mother not entirely listen to Daisy, but her siblings chime in as well:

"'She won't go anywhere without her stuffed duck,' said her brother. 'She'll come home in the middle of the night,' said her sister in her big know-it-all voice. 'No, I won't,' said Daisy. But nobody heard her. Maybe they're right, Daisy thought."

When Daisy just decides to accept Rosa's invitation, her family is too busy to notice. When the family finally finds her at Rosa's, they react in the same over-protective and condescending way, until Daisy lets out a big shout: "I'M NOT GOING HOME!"When her mother asks her why she has to shout, Daisy explains," Because I tell you things, but nobody ever listens to me." Suddenly (and inexplicably), the parents understand Daisy's feelings (though her brother and sister are just the same) and let her stay overnight at Rosa's.They even listen to her (even the brother and sister) the next morning when she comes home.

So, what's the message, if any, here?I think it's a caution to family members about the importance of listening to everyone, and not letting siblings overstep their bounds. On this level, the book works. However, there's no real solution shown for Daisy. Her shout slows the family's incessant talking long enough for her mother to ask her a direct question, and for Daisy to finally give a direct answer. The shout expresses the pent-up anger, and works in the short run, but the book doesn't really offer a long-term solution. It's almost as if it were Daisy's fault for not shouting sooner to get her family to finally listen to her. While not a major flaw, the book would have been more edifying had it presented more complex answers to a complex problem. Pat Cummings' bright illustrations (gouache, pastel, watercolor, and colored pencil) are bright and simple, and give a kind of in-your-face feeling that mirrors Daisy's home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice story but falls a little short
It is nice to see a "real life" problem for younger children discussed in picture book format.

Even though there is no real "story" going on in this book - Daisy is a middle child whose family doesn't listen to her; she decides to spend the night at her friend Rosa's house; her family thinks she has gone missing and when they finally find Daisy and resolve to take her home Daisy finds her voice and her family starts to pay attention - young children will identify with Daisy's frustrations and find pleasure in the end result.

The author has taken care to show that despite Daisy's family's dismissal of her voice, they do care for her and are looking out for her best interests. Winthrop has also been careful to resolve the issue without making too much of a "storybook" ending out of it.

A nice read, but not a book with elaborate illustrations or story telling that will make them say, "Wow!". A good choice for libraries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Has a good Richardson-Jeffes nomograph
Darken and Gurry's text contains an excellent nomograph for the Richardson-Jeffes diagram (Figure 14-4, page 349).It is better than Richardson and Jeffes' original diagram in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute, Vol. 160, 1948, pages 261-270.Richardson & Jeffes used a translucent overlay, but Darken & Gurry made it into a nomograph, making it easier to copy and draw on.It also contains more information than the Ellingham diagram (H. J. T. Ellingham, Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, Vol. 63, 1944, pages 125-133).

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic metallurgical thermodynamics text
This is the classic text that applies thermodynamics and physical chemistry to metallic systems. The thermodynamics follows the basic approach of texts such as Lewis and Randall's "Thermodynamics".The opening chapters cover gasses and liquids as background for the rest of the book that is oriented to metallic systems. It begins with the laws of thermodynamics, but instead of focusing on steam engines it concentrates on solutions, heterogeneous equilibrium and phase diagrams. The book provides a firm foundation for understanding phase relations and phase diagrams. It covers metal (mostly Fe) oxide, carbide, nitride and sulfide systems with specific reference to steel production.I feel that its discussion of Richardson diagrams is particularly clear and I have used it and the diagrams that are provided for over 40 years. The book covers more than just thermodynamics. Being a physical chemistry text, applied to metals, it also has chapters on kinetics, electrochemistry and diffusion.

This is the classic text that has been the basis of more modern books. In my opinion it may have been equaled, but never been surpassed for clarity and the depth of understanding that it provides.I would recommend this book for students and practicing metallurgists who want an adjunct to their current textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about finding one's niche in the world
Gertrude the Possum has a potbelly. Her brother Otto does not and ridicules her for it. However when Otto goes out after her one night in search of food and is unsucessful, she is able to prove that she is courageous and is able to find food for the both of them. This book is delightfully different than most books with an overweight protogonist.Instead of Gertrude losing weight and becoming a "normal" sized possum, she is able to come into her own and prove herself. This book is fine proof that you need not be of "normal" weight to be successful in what you do. ...
