A questing sort of book redolent of Hesse's Journey to the East
We meet ill-defined Alexander who receives a mysterious letter inviting him to undertake a "course" of undefined nature with unstated goals.

Alexander takes a journey of self-discovery, but seems no better off and no wiser than he was before.

Wheldon, a British physician, is a fine writer whose early work will particularly appeal to those whose lives are presently halted or in a state of flux, whether due to ennui or existentialism.
