From the author: Red maple nursery plots (5% slope) located in middle Tennessee at Cookeville, TN, were treated with simazine, 2,4-D, and bromide in fall of 1992 and spring of 1993. The maple plots had aisle cover treatments of rye grass (RG) (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), crimson clover (CC) (Trifolium incarnatum L.), appalow (AP) (Lespedeza cuneata (Dumont G. Don), and no cover-clean till (CT). Tillage was conducted (15 cm depth) using a tractor-pulled rototiller. All chemicals were detected in the 60-90 cm soil depth after the first rainfall event. Bromide moved readily in the soil profile. 2, 4-D dissipated within 24 days in the soil. Simazine remained more in the surface soil. Rainfall totaled 653 mm after fall application and 282 mm after spring application. From 0.1-6.8% of simazine applied was exported in runoff and from 0-3.2% of 2,4-D applied was exported in runoff. There were higher volumes of water and sediment runoff and higher pesticide concentrations in runoff from the clean-till plot compared to the cover plots.
