4-0 out of 5 stars The Edgar Wallace Plot Wheel In Action(The Hand of Power)
Edgar Wallace was one of England's most popular and prolific writer ofmysteries. He invented the Edgar Wallace Plot Wheel which included a list of events such as murder, kidnaping, theft, etc. The wheel would get spun and the event fitted into the plot. The cast of characters include a pretty orphan girl with a despotic guardian, a young crime reporter, a penniless Lord, a Scotland Yard Inspector who has never made an arrest, and an amiable burglar who knows too much.Interesting to note that Wallace was abandoned as a baby, and discovered and raised by a London fishmonger. There are plenty of murders, dopings, poisonings, kidnappings, mysterious happenings aboard the Escorial, a magnificent American cruise ship, and lots of treasure including the fabulous Buckle of Isis. A pleasant read with a happy ending.

Who is Four Square Jane? Although her true identity remains hidden until the end of the story, one thing is for sure: she is one of the most daring and successful crooks from the pen of Edgar Wallace. Her resourcefulness knows no bounds as she employs female cunning to get away with a series of risky crimes performed with neatness and cleverness, which cannot but evoke admiration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DON'T MESS WITH THIS RESOURCEFUL WOMAN!
Edgar Wallace's FOUR SQUARE JANE (1929) is a somewhat loosely constructed novel with a large array of mysteries on various levels. Who is Jane? What motivates her? Is she a female Robin Hood? Is she a vigilante? How does she do what she does--without getting caught? As in many mystery books of this era, there is evil and greed in high places, as well as a love story that seems to be in some danger of serious disruption.

Chapter 3 (sometimes titled "The Missing Romney" or "The Stolen Romney") has occasionally been anthologized as if it were a stand-alone short mystery story. It deals with the theft of a painting and is really quite clever. Since it was actually published ten years before the rest of the book, I suspect that it originally was a short story and that Wallace later decided to write an entire book centered around Four Square Jane. Not incidentally, this chapter does not "fit" particularly well into the overall plot of the total book, although its placement near the beginning of the book hides this fact pretty well.

Readers who enjoy solving puzzles will find much to entertain them here, as Scotland Yard attempts to capture a very resourceful young woman who almost seems to have super powers. As the nine chapters unfold, astute readers will see a larger pattern emerging--and they may be correct in many of their assumptions.

It's not as if FOUR SQUARE JANE is any kind of "forgotten masterpiece," but it IS much better than average, and if you like to read about strong, competent young women triumphing over powerful and unscrupulous men, this may just be a book for you. ... Read more

This is the second volume in Leonaur's collected tales about the mild mannered investigator from the Department of Public Prosecutions-Mr J G Reeder. Edgar Wallace created several characters about whom he wrote a series of stories, but few have captured the public imagination more than Mr. Reeder himself. This book contains another substantial helping from Mr Reeder's casebooks including Red Aces, Mr J. G. Reeder Returns, The Guv'nor & The Man Who Passed. All the Reeder stories are gathered together in two matching Leonaur volumes-available in softcover or hardcover with dust jacket-making them a delight for both new enthusiasts and collectors alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reeder Cases
Good mystery stories.Reeder is a plain yet eccentric man.He also possess a sharp mind he claims is 'criminal'.His resources are many and he has a distinct habit of being one step ahead of the criminal.
This does not keep him out of tight situation, but does give him leverage to extricate himself form these situations.Very enjoyable stories.

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTERUNDER ROYAL RULEIt was pointed out in Chapter I that but little was accomplished for educational improvement under the lords proprietors. For nearly a quarter of a century after the transfer of the colony to royal control, in 1729, practically the same conditions prevailed as before. In 1729 the white population of the colony was estimated at not more than thirteen thousand, and the inhabitants were sparsely distributed. Conditions still continued unfavorable to intellectual and educational development. As late as 1736 the colony had no printing-press, no printed collection of its laws, and perhaps only a few regularly settled schoolmasters. The first printing-press came into the colony in 1749 and the laws were first published two years later. For a long time no governmental provision was made for schools, but "there were many highly educated citizens scattered throughout the province, who lived with considerable style and refinement. Sturdy, honest, and hospitable agriculturists gathered around themselves elements of large future development, and their premises showed wealth, industry, and care." Later on many of these well-to-do families of the Cape Fear region sent their sons to Harvard, those of the northeast section sent theirs to England for education, and the Presbyterians of the interior region educated their sons at Princeton. Some local provision was also made for education, though the poorer classesof the population were neglected and more or less ignorant.-.Occasional attempts were made, however, for educational improvement of the masses. The first notable example of such efforts was in 1736, when, in his message to the Assembly, Governor Gabriel Johnston said, after "observing the deplorable and almost total want of divine worship throughout the Pr... ...
