4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not much else
This book isn't for uptight people. It was written at a time when racism and "paternalism" were valid, institutionalized points of view. Africans are portrayed as a mindless, warmongering people who engage in acts of arbitrary violence, and easily exploited by Arabs and Coast Africans. ("When their stomachs are full, thoughts turn to war"). But that having been said, the exchanges between the main characters are quite amusing, and it is a perfect book to spend a lazy afternoon with. In short, highly entertaining, but very much lacking in the intellectual department.

Product Description
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals. Edgar Wallace was born in Yarmouth, Greenwich, Norfolk. His biological parents were actors Richard Horatio Edgar (who never knew of his existence) and Mary Jane "Polly" Richards, nee Blair. Known as Richard Freeman, Edgar had a happy childhood, forming an especially close bond with 20-year-old Clara Freeman who became like a second mother to him. His foster-father George Freeman was an honourable and kind man and determined to ensure Richard received a good education. He is most famous today as the co-creator of "King Kong", writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story "King Kong" (1933) credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, The Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime. His other works include: The Angel of Terror (1922), The Clue of the Twisted Candle (1916), and The Daffodil Mystery (1920). ... Read more

Product Description

Sanders is leaving Africa!

Trouble has beset the popular and respected Commissioner in recent weeks. Bosambo, Chief of the Ochori, made himself scarce just before the arrival of bumbling English Cabinet Minister Blowter -- who was abducted and then strangely rescued . . . and now, out of the blue, the Commissioner is granted six months' leave.

This puts Sanders' unsettled sector of Africa under the oversight of Hamilton of the Houssas, together with an entirely unknown and probably inexperienced young man named Francis Augustus Tibbetts -- promptly dubbed "Bones" upon his arrival.

Trouble begins from the start. As news spreads of the Commissioner's departure, N'gori, the Chief of the Akasava, sets his drums to calling for a dance-of-many-days.

A dance-of-many-days spells "spears" -- and spears spell trouble!

English novelist Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was author of Sanders of the River, Jack O' Judgment, and The Angel of Terror, among many other popular novels. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny! Classical! Innocent and endearing humour!
Bones has the knack of getting into trouble - and exasperating his chief, captain Hamilton! These are witty, humourous adventures of the innocent Lieutenant Tibbets, "Bones" as he is known to his colleagues, in British West Africa as lieutenant of the Houssas.

Set in colonial times, these are stories that bring up a vivid imagery of the child-like natives and their imperialist bosses: co-existing in an uncomfortable state of uneasy peace...

I recommend this book for its pure, unadulterated and innocent fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
edgar wallace is one of my favourate authors and this is one of his best books

5-0 out of 5 stars A 100 year old Thriller
Edgar Wallace wrote this novel nearly a hundred years ago. I myself read it about 30 years ago, and enjoyed it immensely. I then went on to build a collection of Edgar Wallace - most of his other works are also superb, though this one is simply outstanding. It is amazing that the book has been reprinted again a 100 years after it was first issued.

It is a story of four persons, who are very upright, and are committed to ensure that people in public life also remain upright. They promise to kill a minister (with prior intimation of time and place), if he passes an unjust law. The story is about how the victim tries to save himself and how the four men ultimately [ fail / succeed ;) ].

The plot is very tight and taut, and the ending is extremely clever. This is a good, clean novel, an excellent thriller. There is no introspection, no soliloquies, no shades of grey. Just pure thrill and fun.

Buy it if you are fortunate enough not to have ever read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The four just men
Modern authors can learn much from this book by the late Edgar Wallace. It is an intriguing plot, captivating to the very end. The reader finds a love/hate relationship with these 'off the wall' protagonists who of high moral character themselves are also lethal in the resolving of their motives.
Captivating reading for the mystery buff.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Four Characterless Men
If you are the Saint fans, you'll be also interested in "The Four Just Men".They are also a kind of "Modern Robin Hoods" who fight against the injustice beyond the reach of the Law.I read some Edgar Wallace's short stories before and they were splendid. This book is enjoyable, but not so good as I expected.Unlike the Saint, the Four Just Men lack outstanding indivisualities that attract readers.Indeed they are nondescript and distinguishable only by names. When more than one heros appear, they should display different characters or abilities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but entertaining murder-mystery
Old-fashioned (1930s) murder mystery. Well-written and entertaining if a little humourless. The politeness of all concerned date it badly but also provide it with an endearing quaintness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Late Edgar Wallace thriller
From the copyright date, it appears that Wallace published this novel near the end of his life.If it wasn't his last book, it must have been nearly so.It's a presentable mystery with a bit of romance thrown in.The murderer is fairly obvious early on, but I still found the story enjoyable.Wallace included some intentional self-parody, as when the characters several times remark that a particular turn of events was worthy of being included in a fictional thriller. This edition is very handsome with the cover reproducing what I assume must have been the original dust jacket.

At one time, Edgar Wallace was I believe the best selling novelist in the world.Today he is largely forgotten and most of his books are out of print, at least in the United States. So, if you have never read him, this book is a reasonable place to start. ... Read more
