4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Lope de Vega
This is a great presentation of three of the best Golden Age Spanish plays, which reveal psychological complexity in the context of rapid action. This translation of the plays is excellent in keeping the feel of their fast pace while giving graceful phrases to the characters. The three plays are first the most famous "Fuente Ovejuna" (which is a formula for civil disobedience against the unjust rulers), followed by "The Knight from Olmedo" ( a story of love, heroism, and jealosy which reveals how justice was enacted in that era), and finally "Punishment Without Revenge" ( a story of fiery love and how it burns its victims). The only thing I wished was that this could have been a bilingual edition with the Spanish on one page and the English on the facing page so we could correlate the beauty of the two languages. However, it is really a delight to be able to read a modern translation of these works.

5-0 out of 5 stars (Todos a una) ¡Fuenteovejuna!
If you think Cervantes was Spain's Shakespeare, you're dead wrong! 'Twas Lope; perhaps the greatest playwriter in history, after Billy the Bard! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Spanish Theatre
I used Fuenteovejuna as a textbook in my spanish-language theatre class.Even though it was for school and not my own choice, this is an excellent book.It talks a bit about Lope de Vega's (interesting) life, and has a verse translation. The one thing I would say is that don't expect the translation to be word-for-word.Since the original text is in verse, they translated it in verse for staging purposes. But it is an excellent translation. The spanish version is on the left side and english on the right, so as you are reading it you can simply look over if you are unsure of the translation of something.

As far as the play itself, it is a very entertaining play and an inspiring story. In small sections, we staged the whole play and it was very entertaining to watch and perform. This is a classic from Spain's "golden age" and should not be passed up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fuente Ovejuna

Product Description

El Caballero de Olmedo is a history play, a retelling of a folk tale, a celebrated piece of Golden Age drama, and also an intense mediation upon the power of desire, the deceits of eroticism and literary convention, the injustice of a world obsessed with appearance, and the tragic potential inherent in the courting of beautiful women. The introduction sets this play within the context of Baroque eroticism and sexual mores as well as dramatic practice. The text is presented with glosses to words unfamiliar to undergraduate students; the notes comprise summaries of acts and scenes from a dramatic point of view, and in-depth notes to problematic passages in the text, written with an undergraduate readership in mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars in response to the last guy's review...
This play is not called a comedy because it is funny.Nor are any plays from Golden Age Spanish literature. They are called comedies simply because they are not allowed the name of Tragedies, which is reserved for plays written in Greek language and style.Spanish is a "vulgar" offshoot from Latin, and "tragedies" were not works for the vulgar (common) language. If you are looking for comedy in a Golden Age Spanish play it will be difficult. Most involve moral and religious issues. But you should still read this play because it is pretty [darn] good :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Humor is not suitable for time travel
This is one of those books that any contemporary reader shall not face alone. Even if your first language is Spanish, the archaic nature of some words and phrases, force you to read the relevant line more that threetimes to get a notion of the idea behind them. Afterwards, you must figureout why the work was considered as a comedy in the XVI Century. Theinfatuation between Don Alonso and Ines is not a joyful event on thecontrary, both character are consumed by anguish and the rejected lover isonly thinking about revenge. Only Fabia presents an element which lights upthe gloomy nature of the play and that somehow is not predictable. Considerto read this book if you are interested in the evolution of SpanishLiterature but do not expect much pleasure of laughter out of it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Translation into English verse, with facing annotated Castilian of Lope de Vega's three American plays. It is with joy and sadness simultaneously that I write this preface to this elegant and superb contribution to the theater of the Spanish Golden Age: With sadness because its author, Kenneth A. Stackhouse, has passed on to a better world; with joy because Ken's beloved wife, Marcia, asked me subsequently to write this preface, unaware perhaps that Ken had earlier asked my advice on this project. If this is not synchronicity - dare I say Providence - I don't know what is. I have perused Ken's informed and meticulous study, which clarifies many issues with respect to the three Lope de Vega plays on what used to be called the Conquest and is now termed the Encounter of America and Spain. I have also perused, with awe and admiration, Professor Stackhouse's superb verse translations of La famosa comedia del Nuevo Mundo descubierto por Cristobal Colon, (The Famous Drama of the Discovery of the New World By Christopher Columbus), El Arauco domado (The Conquest of Araucania), and El Brasil restituido (Brazil Restored). To date, only the first work has had the benefit of a critical text and an English prose translation. That is both good and sad: good because the play is little known and deserves more attention; sad because the other two plays should have been studied more and translated earlier into English. In my estimation, El Arauco domado is a practically unknown masterpiece of epic proportions, especially as far as the indigenous Americans are concerned. El Brasil restituido is a world drama that treats transnational affairs (indigenous Brazil, the Jewish Diaspora, the dual Luso-Iberian monarch, and the Dutch West India Company) from multiple ethnic and religious perspectives. Finally, the Nuevo Mundo play remains the only work written by a Spanish Baroque dramatist on the Columbine discovery and European settlement of this continent. As if this were not sufficient, Kenneth A. Stackhouse, thinking not only of non-Hispanists but of Comedia scholars as well, presents us in this edition the three plays in the original Spanish, hence making available works that, again, lack for the most part critical and textual studies. This text represents a labor of love, to be sure.It is also the culminating work of a scholar who, thanks to the wisdom of Marcia, Bob, and the Mellen Press, will live on much longer than any of us will. Ken would be pleased. ... Read more

Product Description
Wit's End is a loose adaptation of La dama boba (The LadySimpleton), a comedy by the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. Acontemporary of Shakespeare, Lope developed a dramatic model thatbecame the reigning formula in Spain during the period now known asthe Golden Age. Wit's End, like La dama boba, features twosisters--one mentally challenged and the other exceedingly bright--andtwo less-than-constant suitors. Love and ingenuity combine to producea happy ending, engineered by the newly enlightenedsimpleton. Building on the ironies of gender politics, Wit's Endpresents the metamorphosis of the "slow" sister while allowing theintellectual sister to maintain her lofty aspirations. The volumecontains the text of Wit's End, together with an introduction thatfocuses on the background, criticism, and adaptations of La dama boba. ... Read more

Product Description
Peribanez is a poetic tragicomedy of masterly theatricality andprofound human interest. Created from a few lines of folk song,it tells of the Comendador's adulterous passion for Peribanez'swife, Casilda. The conflict between Peribanez, the sturdilyindependent peasant farmer, and the romantic, self-doubtingnobleman is brilliantly presented against a background of a wholesociety, from peasant to king, in harmonious coexistence. Anunderlying poetic structure of great richness and consistencyadds depth to Lope's handling of the theme. ... Read more
