Excerpt: Tristan Tzara (French pronunciation: ; born Samuel or Samy Rosenstock, also known as S. Samyro; April 16 1896December 25, 1963) was a Romanian and French avant-garde poet, essayist and performance artist. Also active as a journalist, playwright, literary and art critic, composer and film director, he was known best for being one of the founders and central figures of the anti-establishment Dada movement. Under the influence of Adrian Maniu, the adolescent Tzara became interested in Symbolism and co-founded the magazine Simbolul with Ion Vinea (with whom he also wrote experimental poetry) and painter Marcel Janco. During World War I, after briefly collaborating on Vinea's Chemarea, he joined Janco in Switzerland. There, Tzara's shows at the Cabaret Voltaire and Zunfthaus zur Waag, as well as his poetry and art manifestos, became a main feature of early Dadaism. His work represented Dada's nihilistic side, in contrast with the more moderate approach favored by Hugo Ball. After moving to Paris in 1919, Tzara, by then one of the "presidents of Dada", joined the staff of Littérature magazine, which marked the first step in the movement's evolution toward Surrealism. He was involved in the major polemics which led to Dada's split, defending his principles against André Breton and Francis Picabia, and, in Romania, against the eclectic modernism of Vinea and Janco. This personal vision on art defined his Dadaist plays The Gas Heart (1921) and Handkerchief of Clouds (1924). A forerunner of automatist techniques, Tzara eventually rallied with Breton's Surrealism, and, under its influence, wrote his celebrated utopian poem The Appr...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=36885 ... Excerpt: Mihail Sadoveanu (Romanian pronunciation: ; occasionally referred to as Mihai Sadoveanu; November 5, 1880 October 19, 1961) was a Romanian novelist, short story writer, journalist and political figure, who twice served as acting republican head of state under the communist regime (1947-1948 and 1958). One of the most prolific Romanian-language writers, he is remembered mostly for his historical and adventure novels, as well as for his nature writing. An author whose career spanned five decades, Sadoveanu was an early associate of the traditionalist magazine Smntorul, before becoming known as a Realist writer and an adherent to the Poporanist current represented by Viaa Româneasc journal. Critically acclaimed for their visions of ancient solitude and natural abundance, his books are generally set in the historical region of Moldavia and build on themes from the country's medieval and early modern history. Among them are Neamul oimretilor ("The oimreti Family"), Fraii Jderi ("The Jderi Brothers") and Zodia Cancerului ("Under the Sign of the Crab"), while, with Baltagul ("The Hatchet") and other works of fiction, Sadoveanu extends his fresco to contemporary hist...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=913559 ... Product Description
In 1936, French publisher Christian Zervos released a collection of drawings by Henri Matisse as part of his Cahiers d'Art series. Along with 39 stunning Matisse drawings, the book included a preface by Zervos and a poem by Tristan Tzara dedicated to the artist. The drawings, mostly of women—nudes, portraits, interior scenes—express an extraordinary sensuality.

This reprint, a facsimile edition faithful to the original, features translations by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and scholar Richard Howard. The beauty of Matisse's simple drawings, as powerful today as in 1936, remains accessible to art lovers and a general audience alike. 39 full-page facsimile reproductions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars magic lines
marvellous to study how Matisse creates a complete mood and pesonality with a few carefully (or perhaps quickly) drawn clear lines.Total magic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Women
How does a man create, on paper, with a few simple pencil strokes, a whole human being? The women in this collection are erotically beautiful creatures, to be sure, but they are more than that. They are people, individuals, women one could know. Extraordinary! ... Read more

While the lion's share of the poems are drawn from the Collected, some new poems are also featured. ... Read more

Product Description
Noted editor and translator Pierre Joris brings together four seemingly disparate authors, Rainer Maria Rilke, Tristan Tzara, Jean-Pierre Duprey and Habib Tengour, forming a book of poems, prose-poems, semi-autobiographical prose, and poetic narratives.

It is not an anthology, it is not a collected translations, it has roots in no particular literary movement or idea. The only obvious binding factor is presented in the title: that these four works share a single translator.

4 X 1 invites the reader to discover a different sort of book, a collection of different writings in known and unknown spaces, that cannot help but move the reader toward an image of the twentieth century organized without boundaries. ... Read more
