A great selection from the best translation
I am going to leave the general discussions of the merits of the entirety of Plutarch's Lives to others, and instead focus on details of this edition and translation - except I should note that these two lives by themselves are in print in this edition because they are amongst the best of Plutarch's lives, or at least his Greek lives, and deal with the golden age of Athens.

This edition is a reprint - literally, a photo reproduction - of one of the volumes of Perrin's pairs of Greek Lives, circa 1910.In addition to the Funeral Oration of Pericles from Thucydides, over half the volume consists of Perrin's extensive introduction and notes.The relatively large format of this paperback, makes for easy reading.

Perrin, and his translation, are perhaps best known from the eleven volumes of the Harvard/Heinemann Loeb Classical Library editions of Pericles' lives, the small green volumes with the Greek text across the page from the English.Perrin's is the only notable 20th century translation of Plutarch's lives, probably the most readable, and arguably the most accurate.He avoids some of the more arcane Victorian vocabulary and phrasing used by Clough, and while possible sacrificing the conveyance of a certain elegance of prose that Plutarch may have intended through the Greek original, he stays closer to a direct translation of the Greek text.Perrin also appears to be working from more complete and updated Greek texts than Clough and other predecessors, though I don't know the scholarly details of that issue.It is unfortunate that none of Perrin's translations of other Lives seem to be currently available in affordable reprints.

To those interested in Plutarch's Lives in general, and the relatively more contemporaneous Roman lives for which he is perhaps best known, I would still recommend Perrin's translations, and the expense of getting them in the Loeb Classical Library volumes, unless they have become available in another form such as this.
