Product Description
Genocide Studies is one of the fastest-growing fields in the social sciences, attracting students from a wide range of disciplines (including history, sociology, political science, philosophy, law, anthropology, and cultural studies). The Historiography of Genocide is the first book to offer an overview of the discipline as a whole. In original essays specially commissioned for this book, leading scholars in their fields offer indispensable analyses of complex themes, approaches and explanations, drawn from literatures that, for linguistic and other reasons, are often obscure or inaccessible. Tracing the emergence of genocide studies, analyzing its central concepts, methods and research themes, and providing detailed guides to the rich and varied historiographies of many cases of genocide, this book is an invaluable guide to the literature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book..turned a high-school dropout into a high-tech success
I was 26 when I first read and used this book. I was a high-school dropout (9th grade) and doing unskilled labor in the abrasive industry. I saw tremendous results in a very short time, so much so it frightened me ( be careful what you wish for syndrome). Today (I'm now 57) I can look back over a great career in high tech and a great marriage (35 years) with many other rewards as well. I credit this book and its method for providing a great deal of the early impetus to getting me on the road to my success.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an amazing read and practice...! Wow!
Considering the average hypnosis book. Nothing, and I mean nothing is more amazing than the Hypno-Cybernetics system. Sure the method is simple. (Three steps) But in the few days that I've had this book. Wow is just the bottom of the barrel describing Dr. Petrie & Dr. Stone's system of sdubconscious programming. I did the chair and suconscious signal finger raising and subconscious command excercise, (the core of the three steps I was talking about) and the results were just amazing. And on my first day doing it. I recently went on Dr. Petrie's website for his hypnosis institute. Know that this book was written in 1973, you can only wonder what they can do now in one day. I believe and know that their claims are true and real about being able to cure certain phobias and ailments in one day because of the powerfully instant results I had with this book. This review is as for real as "a house on fire". Believe me, when I say that this book is an amazing read and practice -- I mean you read it, you do it, then you experience the incredible results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure fun and adventure!
What a great followup to Hazard's Price.I hope Mr. Stone continues this series, as he has suddenly become one of my favorite authors.

This is a refreshingly fast and fun read, with lots of action, twists and turns which kept me guessing. Also number of interesting surprises. The ending is a real cliffhanger (pun intended).

The ending really pleased and surprised me... I expected a treatment like an X-files episode, where the alien/psychic/mutant/whatever gets away at the end and the viewer is left somewhat unsatified since there is no "resolution"... In this book, there is a surprising and unexpected resolution at the end. What could be next!An even greater and more mysterious story has just begun...can't wait for the next book in the series!

5-0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful and surprising follow up
In this second book in the series, Mr. Stone's writing really seems to come into it's own.The entire story is a pressure cooker with just a few brief respites for the characters (and reader). I really did not expect this book to develop such a powerful feeling of being a global epic involving military coups and bids for continental mastery as a backdrop to the very personal battle that the main characters engage in.Even some truly thought provoking passages as a bonus.

Great tension between the characters, both those working with one another and those working to destroy one another. Some great new monsters have been thrown in (the druzem) along with the traditional (a manticore, for example).

But best of all was the incredible ending that left me wondering just how big the "boom" is going to be when Mr. Stone decides to blow the whole thing wide open!

A great read and more than worthy follow up to Hazard's Price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hunt Begins!
Stone'sgripping fantasy series comes to it's own in this
novel his world-building skills are impressive as he once again takes us to a world reeling from a horrible mage war and how mages created a spell to take the magic out of the world and NOW a sorcerer called Madh and the assassin, Hain seek to undue the spell!
Brandt Karrelian, the former spy turned Idustrialist is obsessed in hunting down the sadistic assasin called Hain who crippled his best friend. He is aided by childhood friend and thief called Marwick, the chaldean spy Elena Imbress and seasoned forest, Callom Pell. This novel has it all: plot twists as you see power-hungry chaldean general Amet Pale schemes to control the country.
Our heroes must battle mythical monsters, bloodthirsty cult of immortal killers.Stone's action sequences are violent and mesmerizing as you see magical battles and scenes of brutal hand to hand combat and the final confrontation between Karrelian and Hain a top of a stone Island! I look forward to reading the next book and If Robert Stone is reading this review all I got to say is: Hurry up and write the next book! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking scenes of violence!
This book is great and should be recommended to anyone.Robert Stone strikes just the right ballance between a fast-moving plot and interesting themes to keep readers from putting the book down. You won't want to stop reading once you pick this one up!

I especially liked the shocking scenes of violence, which had me on the edge of my seat. Also, "Unbinding" is a great word play on unbending and the German-Yiddish word for "unconditional."This is a work of genius. ... Read more

The Central California coast has some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Rugged coastal terraces are backdropped by mountain ranges that run parallel to the Pacific coastline. Picturesque communities dot a landscape abundant with valleys, white sand beaches, cool forests, and natural preserves. Day Hikes On the California Central Coast includes 120 hikes along 400 miles of coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The hikes describe how and where to access the best trails and features from Highway 1, offering many opportunities to explore the beautiful landscape. Highlights include tidepools, off-shore rock formations, huge dunes, wildlife observation sites, expansive overlooks, canyons, waterfalls, and lighthouses. The best trails in the state and county parks are featured, as well as city trails that are often overlooked. A wide range of hikes accommodates amateur to avid hikers.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Coast Less Travelled By
It has been seven years since the first edition of 'Day Hikes on the California Central Coast' was published. In some ways, one could argue that not a lot changes on the central coast, and indeed many of the trails that were described in the first edition are still found in this one.But the second edition covers far more territory than the the first.Instead of going from Santa Barbara in the South to Monterey in the north, this new edition extends the central coast through Santa Cruz county and in the process introduces readers of the older version to many new hiking opportunities.

Like all the books in the Day Hike series, this one focuses on relatively easy walks, most of which are under 5 miles.Indeed, many of the hikes are less than three miles and those driving along the coast looking for a spot to stretch their legs will find ample opportunities on paths that are under 1 mile in length.Route descriptions are for the most part straight forward, and each hike suggestion includes a sketch map of the trail which is usually all one needs to find your way around.

Stone includes several trails in state parks, natural areas, and other popular tourist sites, but one of the strengths of this book, and others in the series, is the number of trails found in city parks and small wildlife preserves.Usually only locals are aware of these hidden gems but using the earlier edition of this book, I discovered several scenic hikes like the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve that I might never have found otherwise.Indeed, the best reason to buy this book is that careful use of it can result in finding quiet parts of the coast for yourself, even during high tourist season.

But this feature is not enough for me to give the book 5 stars. There are a couple of problems with the book that concern me.In the first instance, like the other books in this series, the only photos you will find in this volume are on the cover.I like to catch a glimpse of the scenery that awaits me on a new trail and all of Robert Stone's books come up short in this regard.I am also concerned, however, about some of the trails described in this book in particular. It includes some absolute gems like the Skyline to the Sea Trail and several walks on the Point Lobos Peninsula. But Stone also includes the "nature" trail at Ragged Point Inn in this book. That trail was always steep, but of late it has become overgrown and is washed out in several places.Indeed, having hiked it in the last few months, I would describe it as outright dangerous if the weather is at all damp. Yet Stone's description of it is virtually unchanged. Similarly, a portion of the trail at Carpenteria Salt Marsh was no longer as described in the earlier edition when I last hiked it, but the sketch map appears the same in the updated edition.I am therefore moderately concerned that the author may not have rechecked all the trails for the new edition. So be sure to exercise caution when you stop for some of these hikes.

That said, I still recommend this book.It makes a nice companion volume to Stone's 'Day Hikes on the California Southern Coast.'If Stone should ever write a volume covering the north coast, then one could plan an entire summer vacation around these guides. The California Coast is beautiful, and seeing it by foot, even if only briefly, is the best way to experience this wonderful portion of the Golden State. ... Santa Barbara is a captivating, inviting community that is located in a beautiful, natural setting along the Pacific coast. The temperate climate and refreshing ocean breezes, very similar to the Mediterranean, have distinguished this area as "the jewel of the American Riviera." The landscape around the city includesmountainous terrain, preserved forests and wilderness areas, and stretches of undeveloped coast, allowing this scenic area to have miles of quiet, secluded hiking trails. Day Hikes Around Santa Barbara is a comprehensive guide to 82 day hikes within a 50-mile radius of the city. The hikes include an excellent cross section of scenery and difficulty level, ranging from coastal beach walks to steep canyon climbs. Highlights include oceanside bluffs; beaches; tide pools; wetland preserves; sculpted gorges; rock outcroppings with caves; numerous waterfalls and secluded pools in mossy canyons; mountain ridge trails; historical sites; and stunning overlooks of wide mountain valleys, towns, and the Pacific Ocean. All hikes can be completed within a day (although map sources and references are included for extending the hike). Each hike includes its own map, accurate driving and hiking directions, and a quick overview of distance/time/elevation. The summaries allow the hiker to choose a trail appropriate to their ability and desire. This 184-page book is a comprehensive hiker's guide to the area around Santa Barbara.Companion hiking guides, also by Stone, include Day Hikes on the California Central Coast, Day Hikes Around San Luis Obispo County, and Day Hikes Around Ventura County.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some trail descriptions not accurate
This is a nice reference if you'd like a list of the trails in the area. Many of the trail descriptions are confusing, and the mileages listed are incorrect. When the author describes the "round-trip" mileage, it is usually the one-way mileage. Sometimes the listed mileage is simply incorrect. Seems like the author may not have been on many of these hikes recently or at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Santa Barbara Day Hikes
I have been a Santa Barbara resident for over twenty years and my family and I have enjoyed many of the featured hikes in the book. The driving directions and hike descriptions are excellent. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is looking to enjoy the beauty of the Santa Barbara mountains.

Sven Klein - Santa Barbara, CA

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Santa Barbara
I've traveled all over the world and the most beautiful natural setting I've seen is Santa Barbara. The ocean, the mountains, the vegetation, flowers and incomparable climate make this a unique paradise. Hiking here is a sublime experience and its possible to do it year-round since the temperatures rarely dip below 50 degrees. If you're a dedicated hiker and have missed Santa Barbara, please try and remedy this. You'll spend some of the best hours of your life hiking in this incredible place.

This book is one of the best hiking guides I've found for the Santa Barbara area. If you're a beginner, there are plenty of short treks for you, mostly clustered around the beach or city. There are also a dozen moderate hikes and quite a few trail descriptions for streunous jaunts, all of these in the mountain areas. The descriptions of each trail is quite good and the driving desriptions to the trailheads is adequate (I haven't gotten lost yet from following their directions). I recommend this guide for everyone fortunate to hike in this beautiful locale. ... Read more

Until recently, little archaeological investigation has been dedicated to the Inka, the last great culture to flourish in Andean South America before the sixteenth-century arrival of the Spaniards. While the Inka have been traditionally viewed through the textual sources of early colonial histories, this volume draws on recent archaeological research to challenge theories on the chronology and development of the Inka Empire and how this culture spread across such a vast area. The volume demonstrates the great regional diversity of the Inka realm, with strategies of expansion that were shaped to meet a variety of local situations beyond the capital in Cusco. Using a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, scholars from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities provide a new understanding of Inka culture and history.

Product Description
In this guide to the fiction of Robert Stone, Gregory Stephenson introduces readers to a novelist of popular appeal and critical acclaim whom he describes as an anomaly among contemporary American writers--an author independent of literary fashions, unaffiliated with groups or movements. In this critical survey, Stephenson identifies the qualities that separate Stone from his peers and have brought him accolades such as the National Book Award, earning him a place of enduring significance in the American canon.

Stephenson provides close readings of Stone’s novels and short stories, including A Hall of Mirrors, Dog Soldiers, A Flag for Sunrise, Children of Light, Outerbridge Reach, and Damascus Gate. He traces the combination of a stark, hard-boiled realism with the hallucinatory and mystical aspects of Stone’s writing. His examination of Stone’s attention to character, imagery, and figures of speech stands beside his suggestion that Stone’s corpus reveals a coherent, evolving vision of moral, psychological, political, and metaphysical concerns. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners with children
This is a short guidebook devoted to a subject that deserves volumes: hiking in beautiful Lake Tahoe. This guidebook focuses on a very narrow area of the lake, the South Side, and ignores the Nevada side almost totally. This is an irritating omission, even if the majority of great hikes are on Tahoe's south side. There are also some slightly out-of-the-way hikes (like Desert Rose) which are omitted from the book. The predominant focus of this book is on short, easy hikes, the kind of little forays families can take with their children. Thus the most famous and classic Tahoe hike, Mount Tallac, is not mentioned because it's rated as too strenuous. Tinker Knob, at 14 miles, is also ignored.

These omissions will unsettle veteran hikers with endurance. But for many more casual folk, this guide will fit their needs to a "T." If you're interested in short, scenic and not very strenuous outings, then Stone has provided you a piece of Nirvana. His descriptions of the trailheads and directions on how to reach the hikes are adequate and accurate. He also dispenses advice on bug repellent, sunscreen, band-aids and proper footwear. If you decide to embark on some of these short treks, and your fitness level is good, I urge you to tackle more ambitious peaks at Tahoe, the hiking here is beautiful and among the best in the state. Happy hiking!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but not great
We thought we were going on an easy, 1.5 hr hike.3 hrs later, we got back to the car.Problem was that the hike wasn't quite described as accurately as it could have been and there was no warning that we should ignore the trail markers. We got very turned around and had to ignore themap provided in the book and use our common sense to find our way back.(This was the hike at Fallen Leaf Lake)

3-0 out of 5 stars More for South Tahoe than North Tahoe
This guide should be renamed "Day Hikes Around South Lake Tahoe."Out of the 21 hikes, only 5 of them are around the North Shore and 3 on the Nevada side of the lake. The rest are all around Emerald Bay and South Lake Tahoe.Aside from this disappointment, each day hike has easy to follow directions and maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that focuses on short hikes
Tired of guides that list "easy" hikes that turn out to be 8 miles and take 5 hours? Then this book is for you. Most of the hikes listed are 1-3 miles long and can be easily finished by most everyone. Designed for the non-serious hiker who enjoys nature and desires a scenicbut not exhausting walk through the woods. This book was designed to beeasy to read. It includes large diagrams, elevation changes, traildescriptions, and driving directions. A section of color pictures displaysthe best vista of each hike. The guide is a good glove compartmentcompanion for any family outing to the Lake Tahoe area. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Probably Not Worth It
There are a couple (out of 55) interesting and unique hikes in this guide, but if you have other books (which you probably do) then you already have the information.A couple of these hikes are complete cheats, like visiting the russian fort and a couple of the beach walks (you can figure those out on your own!).
Only worth pulling off the shelf if you are going to do a LOT of hikes and need some more ideas besides the "usual".

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong turns and bad directions!
My wife and I went on our honeymoon in Hawaii, and took this book and the Ultimate Kauai Guide Book with us.We tried to use Day Hikes more than a few times while on our trip, and more often than not we struck out with the damn book!It gave us bad directions for a few hikes, while the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook never led us astray.
If you need a book for Kauai, take the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. If you want a book for day hikes, do not buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars great hidden hikes!
I used this book & found several wonderful hikes that weren't mentioned in any of the other Kauai guide books. The best was the Waiema Canyon hike -- it wasn't a super-easy hike, but four of us (ranging in age from 25 to 50) did it in half a day. We had lunch by a beautiful hidden waterfall, & during the hike we found spectacular views of the canyon. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars adequate at best
You simply do not find anything unique in the book that you could not find in other sources.Although I prefer the shorter hikes, less than 4 hours long, this book simply did not live up to my expectations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
I was disappointed when receiving the book. Despite of its title, all but one of the described hikes have an estimated hiking time of at most three hours which can hardly be considered a day hike. The shortest hike isn't ahike at all, followed by one lasting 10 to 30 minutes. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This is a chronologically organized anthology of short stories analysing the genre from two points of reference: the story as an art form, and the story as an event in cultural change. A broad array of super selections is combined with an excellent survey of the development of the genre, an introduction to fiction techniques, biographical, and critical material. The selections include samples of the genre in its various stages of development, from pre-story forms (myth, legend, parable, allegory, fable) to conventional stories, and on the experimental and avante-garde forms. Short introductions precede the work of all writers, combining biographical information with a critical assessment of their role in the development of the short story. Almost 40 per cent of the material from the previous edition is new or reorganized, and the introduction is rewritten to make itself more accessible to the 'average' student. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and easy to use.
This book was exactly what I was looking for - the lazy Missoulian's guide to local trails. I didn't need photos and long descriptions of what I'd see - I just wanted driving directions to the trailheads, and simple, easy-to-use maps of each trail system. This book is also light enough and small enough to take along.

From my experience using it as a reference, the maps in the book just follow those that are posted and sometimes freely available when you reach the trail head - but it puts everything conveniently in one place, and also gives elevation gain, round-trip distances, and the USGS map you should use if you want topos. It also gives basic info of the views and other attractions. A worthwhile purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Native!!
This book may lackhigh quality info. for the experienced outdoorsman but for the common Missoula area Native this book supplies the perfect amount of pertinent information.Where it lacks in detail it excells in simple english.

1-0 out of 5 stars LACKS EVERYTHING NEEDED FROM A GOOD GUIDE BOOK.
This book lacks everything you would expect from a useful guidebook. The trail maps are completely useless in the field.Compounding the complete uselessness of this book are the vague and poorly written hike descriptions.Every hike sounds as boring as the next (even though they traverse some stunning scenery), almost as if this book was researched/written completely at a desk - instead of out in the field.I wonder if the author even set foot on any of these trails? ...
