Product Description
Philip Callow's splendidly readable biography of Robert Louis Stevenson recounts the life of Scotland's finest writer of English prose and the author of such classics as Treasure Island and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A sickly child, Louis became in turn a bohemian dandy, a literary gypsy traipsing through the mountains of France with a donkey, and at twenty-eight the lover of an American woman ten years his senior, the fabulous Fanny. His feelings are always his reasons, said Henry James, and caught in a sentence the secret of Stevenson's popularity as one of the last of the classic storytellers. Stevenson was destined to be a modern man. --James Campbell, New York Times Book Review. Illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and vivid
This biography of the life of Robert Louis Stevenson reveals a man who escaped his Scottish town and family and went overland to California in poverty to reach his love, where he became a nomad, dreamed of being an explorer, and became instead a noted author. The myths and realities surrounding Stevenson's life and adventures are revealing and vivid in Callow's fine portrait. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Mystery/Comedy
This was a great read!I couldn't wait to get to the end.It has quite the tangled plot and gave laughs along the way to boot.I didn't know who would end up where, but when the characters started bumping into each other in strange and twisted ways it was that much more interesting.Who would have thought that Robert Louis Stevenson had it in him?I never heard of this book until I purchased my Kindle and it was the first thing I read.I would recommend this to anyone who likes to be entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bust your gut
This is one of the funniest stories I have ever happened across. I was led to the book by the movie. The two are very different. Each is highly enjoyable and very funny.

However, if I had to choose only one, I would choose the movie. The book is so convoluted that by the end, I was somewhat confused. The movie simplifies a lot of the complexities, leaving cleaner plot lines and providing greater laughs.

To each his own; you may not agree with me. I suggest you enjoy both the book and the movie, and make up your mind for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Victorian Farce
Although I haven't read any of Robert Louis Stevenson's books beyond the big ones (Treasure Island, Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped, New Arabian Nights), I thought I was at least familiar with the rest of his work. But when Washington Post columnist Michael Dirda wrote about this book in one of his essays, I not only knew I'd never heard of it, I knew I had to read it. The story is the kind of slapstick black comedy one can scarcely credit being around in the 19th-century. It concerns two elderly brothers who happen to be the final remaining members of a tontine (this is a kind of private long-term lottery in which funds are anted into a common pool, and the last living member of the "players" claims the entire sum). Each of these old men has a younger male relative who has an eye on claiming the prize at the expense of his cousin. The plot more or less defies easy summarizing, but it involves mistaken identity, the transportation and hiding of a corpse, and all manner of jiggery-pokery by all involved. The farcical antics are rendered in delightfully sprightly prose that remains completely entertaining more than a century later.

Note: There is apparently some contraversy regarding the exact nature of Stevenson's authorship of this work. It is co-credited to his stepson Lloyd Osborne (they colloborated on at least three other works), and some speculate that it is entirely Osborne's work since its style and tone are quite different from most of Stevenson's work. Whatever the case, it's a fun read. There is also a 1966 film version starring Michael Caine, which at present is only available to American audiences on VHS or Region 2 DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nothing like a little judicious levity"
I'ts great to see this priceless little book so affordably back in print.I'm not sure that it's ever had a big American following, but for some years the Times of London had to limit its writers to only one allusion to the novel per issue. (My review title was an oft-repeated line.)The colloration of Stevenson and stepson Lloyd Osborne, it's a seamless integration of comic light adventure, mystery, novel of manners and high-handed farce, all in some of the purest English prose you'll ever read. It's one of those books you end up rereading at least twice, reading aloud to anyone who'll listen, and giving at Christmas - in short, a classic.(The film version cited on this page has a perfect cast but cuts and alters the plot pretty badly - and this is simply one of those books, like most of Dickens and Fitzgerald, that has to be read to be really appreciated.) I'm not familiar with the publisher, but this may be one of those short-run affairs that should be got while it's there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!
Nothing to do on a Friday night or snowbound in front of the fireplace? Fear not! Your entertainment has arrived. This novel showcases Robert Louis Stevenson's penchant for what today is called "dark comedy." It might be described as tongue-in-cheek reportage of a flurry of characters who find ingenious ways of fobbing off onto others a box containing a corpse, though not the corpse of the man who was thought to be the corpse, who actually is not even dead! It gets complicated, you see. The best thing about the book--other than its hilarious plot and ironic tone--is the way Stevenson picks through the mind of each character in search of something rational. Like the novel *A Simple Plan*, so much of the text comprises interior dialogue that it would be hard to turn this into a movie, but it was done once (in the 1960s) and is due, I think, for a re-make. Owen Wilson would be a natural for this one! ... Read more

Product Description
The 64 poems in A Child's Garden of Verses are a masterly evocation of childhood from the author of Treasure Island and Kidnapped. They are full of delightful irony, wit and the fantasy worlds of childhood imagination, and introduce for the first time the Land of Nod. But they are also touched with a genuine and gentle pathos at times as they recall a world which seems so far away from us now. This edition, which includes Charles Robinson's charming illustrations and vignettes, is described as the definitive edition by The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature.Amazon.com Review
Tasha Tudor--illustrator of more than 70 books for children--is known for her charming drawings of children and animals; delicate, flower-filled borders; and delightful settings from days gone by. In this edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's venerated volume of children's poems, Tudor's old-fashioned illustrations perfectly complement the poetry that has survived a century in print. Here is a comfortable world of sunny gardens and storybooks, where children play with toy soldiers and imaginary friends. You may remember some of these poems from your own childhood, such as "My Shadow," "The Swing," and "The Land of Counterpane." If time is any judge, this garden of delights will stay a perennial favorite. (Ages 4 to adult) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book to have for your child
pleasant to look through, tender pastel pictures, high quality paper, great verses by Stevenson that we loved. My daughter falls asleep while I read them to her. I bought a used item among "like new", it came in perfect condition as described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple verses suitable for short bedtime stories
Like many of the great writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Stevenson was a well-traveled and experienced man.Yet, his verses for children are heavily grounded in the joys of childhood, specifically one that was born into a family that is well off. He makes occasional references to children less privileged, but references to the nurse constantly in attendance make it clear that this child does not want.
Other than that, the verses are suitable for reading to modern children, especially as a quick bedtime story. The combination of imagination and play is a powerful one in the lives of children and these short verses will help stimulate the mind of a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to grow up with

I grew up with this book. So many of the poems I remember from my mother reading them to me.Wonderful memories. I just gave this book as a baby gift to my great-niece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wordsworth edition, A Child's Garden of Verses -- Classic
Robert Louis Stevenson's, A Child's Garden of Verses, is a classic because it develops your child's perceptions. It moves from close up observation: the garden, the quilt on the bed, the window and things in the room, to abstracts and distant perceptions: wind, rain, the swing, one's shadow, and lands over the seas.
There is a reason children who are read to develop keen minds, literacy skills, and good relationships with parents, and this is one of the best early childhood reading resources. The Wordsworth edition with fanciful illustrations by Charles Robinson gives the child an extra imaginative leap through time and space. Memorization of Stevenson's poems is worth the pleasure and practice, to develop your mind and your child's. The verses will pop up when you least expect them and will stay with you through the years.

Have you ever had a friend that you cared about, good or bad, turn against you? Then your friend might meet a bad person and hop on their boat instead of staying on yours. In this book, Mr. Utterson finds himself trying to solve a mystery about this same situation, with an old friend and a new foe.
The plot of this book is hard to explain because it's very easy to give this book away.I'll just say that there is a situation between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that involves murder, drugs, death(s), and an unexplained ending.
Mr. Stevenson also did a good job of making the genre difficult to figure out in this book. The book could go under mystery because of the plot, but I say it goes under science fiction because none of the actual drugs in this book have been created yet. Also, this book deals with medicine and in a way evolution.
The theme of this book is man vs. man because Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll are fighting each other for dear life!
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a must read that deserves 8/10 stars.I recommend the book for sci-fi, mystery, and horror lovers and ages 10 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
A astounding collection of classic tales of the macabre. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde takes up about half of the book; the remainder contains storie such as Markhiem, The Bottle Imp, and the Body Snatcher. 5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A WONDEFUL BOOK!
I cannot think of a better way to introduce the poetry of Robert Lewis Stevenson than this small volume. The selection is excellent and of interest you the young reader. The commentary is quite relevant as are the pictures which accompany it.I find that often now, our young people go all the way through the early grades in school and many of them have never heard of Stevenson, much less read his poetry. This was the sort of stuff my generation and the generation before it grew up on and cut our teeth on.I do not feel I am any worse for the wear.I am fearful that we are bringing up an entire generation (rightfully or wrong, although I feel it is the later) of young folks who will have no appreciation to this great art form and will miss a lot. This book helps. This entire series helps, as a matter of fact and I certainly recommend you add this one and the others to your library.Actually, it is rather fun reading these with the young folk and then talking about them. Not only do you get to enjoy the work your self and perhaps bring back some great memories, but you have the opportunity to interact with your child or student. It is actually rather surprising what some of the kids come up with.I read these to my grandchildren and to the kids in my classes at school. For the most part, when I really get to discussing the work with them, they enjoy it.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated Robert Louis Stevenson
This small selection of some of the delightful children's poems by Robert Louis Stevenson is a real treasure. What will capture the fascination of all children (as well as adults like me!) are the illustrations by Lucy Corvino. This artist's beautiful illustrations are perfect for the magicthat all children love in these classic poems. You keep returning to eachpicture, and always discover more fascinating detail.A lovely job - alovely gift book for any small child, and for "grown-ups" like mewho can't resist such perfect art work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Gift
When I showed this beautiful book to a friend, she wanted one for both her children (so they can keep it when they grow up) and also one for her mother. The poetry is timeless--it takes you back instantly into yourchildhood imagination--and the illustrations are superb. These picturesare funny, mysterious, comforting, poignant, all at the same time, andfilled with gorgeous soft color and intriguing details. As a child, Iwould have spent hours looking at them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Children
As an elementary school teacher, I found "Poetry for Young People" by Robert Louis Stevenson, illustrated by Lucy Corvino, a wonderful book. It's a great way to introduce poetry to children becausethe poems are short and easy to understand. The illustrations havemagnificently detailed illustrations without being overly complex orconfusing. The children are drawn to the pictures, which heightens what isbeing read to them. They unanimously respond with great enthusiasm, andthey eagerly ask for more.I highly recommend this book to parents, teachers and anyone who regularly spends time with children. ... During his residence in London, the accomplished Prince Florizel of Bohemia gained the affection of all classes by the seduction of his manner and by a well-considered generosity. He was a remarkable man even by what was known of him; and that was but a small part of what he actually did. Although of a placid temper in ordinary circumstances, and accustomed to take the world with as much philosophy as any ploughman, the Prince of Bohemia was not without a taste for ways of life more adventurous and eccentric than that to which he was destined by his birth. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poor publishing quality hinders good reading experience
This is not a review of the content of the book, rather I'd like to comment on the publishing quality. This book is an "instabook", which I assume to mean that it is printed after it is ordered. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this on the book description page on Amazon. The results of this "instabook" printing are as follows: low quality paper cover and pages; sloppy cut on the exposed edges of the book; numerous typos - averaging 1 per 1.5 pages; misalignment of paragraphs sometimes cutting words in half. All this would be acceptable if the intent of this book and others like it was to deliver classic books at a very affordable price. But! for [the price] it is a complete RIPOFF!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not really the new Arabian Nights, but a fine substitute
At the heart of the book are the six (or two, depending on how you count) stories about Prince Florizel ... these stories if any capture something of what "The Arabian Nights" would have been if it had been written in thenineteenth century. The central character is an impossibly noble andhigh-minded Prince Florizel, who the author appears to believe in with theutmost seriousness - at least until the very end. They tend to begin witha mystery so intriguing that it doesn't even matter if the solution is lessbrilliant than we would have thought."Ruritanian romance" is the bestdescription.Ruritania itself is not so Ruritanian as this.

Thenon-Florizel stories are none of them favourites of mine - which is merelyto say that I don't rank them up there with, say, "The Bottle Imp".All ofStevenson's short fiction is worth reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers of Robert Louis Stevenson
This book has been an inspiration in times of both joy and trouble.Stevenson penned these prayers while head of household in late 1800s Somoa, and the sentiments are timelessly useful today. His wife writes in prologue, that just once the devoted Stevenson abruptly left evening prayers. When she asked him later, he replied that he was "not yet fit to to say, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." I have bid tearful goodbye to friends going abroad reading "Before a Temporary Separation" and in trial prayed "For Renewal of Joy."PRAYERS by Stevenson never disappoints. The only family prayer book you really need to own.Lovely illuminations in the Random House version. ...
