Product Description
In her 55th bestselling novel, Danielle Steel explores the seasons of an extraordinary friendship, weaving the story of three couples, lifelong friends, for whom a month’s holiday in St. Tropez becomes a summer of change, revelation, secrets, surprises, and new beginnings . . .

As Diana Morrison laid the table for six at her elegant Central Park apartment, there was no warning of what was to come. Spending New Year’s Eve together was a sacred tradition for Diana, her husband of thirty-two years, Eric, and their best friends, Pascale and John Donnally and Anne and Robert Smith. The future looked rosy as the long-time friends sipped champagne and talked of renting a villa together in the South of France the following summer. But life had other plans . . .

Just two weeks after New Year’s, tragedy strikes the heart of their close circle, as Robert Smith suffers a sudden, unexpected loss. Without hesitation, Diana and Eric, Pascale and John rally to his side, united in their support, love, and shared grief. Convinced that a change of scenery is just what Robert needs, they urge him to join them on the Riviera in August. But as they soon discover, the ramshackle old mansion they rented in St. Tropez--sight unseen--is far different from the exquisite villa and sun-drenched gardens touted in the brochure. Cobwebs hang from the ceiling. Beds collapse beneath them. All while a would-be housekeeper in a leopard-skin bikini and six-inch heels sashays through the house with a trio of yapping poodles at her heels. But the biggest surprise of all is the woman Robert invites to the villa as his guest--a lovely, much-younger film actress with mile-long legs and a million-dollar smile. Diana and Pascale hate her on sight. But the men are dazzled. And amid the crumbling furniture and the glorious sunsets, the strained relationships and the acts of forgiveness, more surprises are in store for the villa’s occupants. With the last days of summer fast approaching, each couple finds themselves changing in unexpected ways, as old wounds are healed, new love discovered, and miracles unfold...all beneath the dazzling sun of St. Tropez.

By turns wise and moving, heartbreaking and wickedly funny, Danielle Steel’s new novel is about forgiving without forgetting, about the sorrow that shadows our lives and the hope that saves us. And it is about once-in-a-lifetime friendships . . .the kind that heal, sustain, and change us forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Danielle Steel
What can I say, it's Daniell Steel. I've yet to read a book of hers that I didn't love. She keeps you spell bound to the end. I have never been one for enjoying reading all that much, but am amazed that I have read nearly every one she's writen and will continue to as long as she keeps writing such great and entertaining stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars my mom's favorite author
I decided to read this because it is my mom's favorite author and the novel would be quick to finish. It was my first "adult" novel, being i am only sixteen, and it was very easy to follow. During the first few pages, i noticed the author did a really great job of characterization which set the scene for the whole novel.I loved how each couple was very different from one another but they all seemed to have fun and make the book funny. The most interesting part of the book was Agathe. If she wasn't in this book, i think the story would of been three stars. The one thing i didn't like about this book was that the author repeated things a lot: whether it be specific words or things that happened to the characters. It did get a little annoying but overall, i really liked this book.I'm curious as to why many people give Danielle Steel books such low reviews.I figured since she's written so many books, it just comes easy to her and just zips through them. I don't know, but I know I would definitely read another by her. I was suggested to read the book about her son, which made my mom cry.R.I.P.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
The book arrived in great shape and in a timely manner. Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Intended order: Audio book
I may be mistaken but my order was for an Audio book with the same title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Story - Good Entertainment
I don't know what some of the people reviewing this book are hoping for here - Chaucer? Danielle Steel provides in this book a good storyline and some believable and very entertaining characters. I listened to the audiobook version (unabridged) and loved it. It is good entertainment while driving, and it's one I own and listen to over and over again. As far as light literature goes, Ms. Steel delivers. ... Read more

Product Description
... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of DS's Best
I read this a few years ago for the first time. Its a great book, its got a lot of twists and the story begins in war torn Europe where sam walker first appears as a brave and very likeable charactor. He meets cowardly Arthur and they become best friends. They go on to fall in love with the same women whom Sam eventually wed's. I dont want to give too much away but there's a great twist at the end which I for one never saw coming. Read it, if you like DS you ll definately enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Steel Gets The Details All Wrong In This One
I am a lifelong Danielle Steel fan, and read Kaleidoscope when it was first released back in 1987, and I just recently read it again.

This is one of the author's less satisfying books. My main dislike then and now was in the specific details. Most of the time, Steel is meticulous in her accuracy and her details, as she weaves the lives of her fictional characters into real-life events and realistic situations.

Hilary becomes a ward of the state at the age of twelve, and yet, we are supposed to believe that she was able to hide ten thousand dollars in cash inside her suitcase until she left juvenile hall for the last time, at the age of seventeen? This is a logistical impossibility!

Children who enter the system through juvenile hall have their bodies searched and their belongings confiscated as the guards (often referred to euphemistically as counselors) look for drugs, items that could be used as weapons, or other contraband.Even a child like Hilary, who enters the system as a victim of child abuse and not as a juvenile criminal, endure the same routine, every time they enter and leave the juvenile hall.If by some act of magic, her secret stash of cash wasn't discovered by the guards, then it would have been found by the same girls who abused her in the group home. The first thing that Maida and Georgine would have done to Hilary was to rifle through all of her belongings and take whatever they wanted.

These details, while perhaps easily overlooked by the majority of readers, are wrong enough to ruin the book for those who understand what it means to be a child in placement, a ward of the state. In all other aspects, Steel's chilling level of detail is sadly accurate, including the rape of a child at the hands of two older girls. The rest of the book is hit and miss, with a disconnected plot and a story ending that is less than satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good but not in my top ten!
As usual, Danielle takes you off into many places and in this story keeps you intrigued. It is almost like a mystery rather than one of her usual love stories. She had a little too much drama going on in this book and it did not quite come together as I expected. It is interesting but not a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best!
Kaleidoscope is one of Danielle's best. I enjoyed every page from beggining to end! Some say the end is unrealistic, but it's fiction! You should read this one.....you won't be dissapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nature Versus Nurture Steel Style
This is actually the first Danielle Steel novel I'd ever read and since there was no synopsis on the book anywhere I had no idea what I was reading about. After finishing the story I sorta came to the conclusion that it is almost an exploration of nature versus nuture in terms of how people turn out.
The story follows two generations of a family, starting with two friends that meet in WW2 and their interactions with a young frenchwoman named Solange. In the end one of them marries Solange and they lead a nearly perfect life with a tragic ending, leaving their children orphaned and eventually seperated. The story picks up again in bits and pieces about each childs life and how they progress based on their new living conditions, and when the other friend - the one who wasn't married to Solange - is near death he wishes to seek them out again and make sure that each child is ok. Romance, breakups, disturbing sequences, and questions of self and ones place in the world arise and the ending of the story comes somewhat full circle to the beginning but overall it is a bit cheesy.

Regardless of which the story itself is captivating, and if this is typical of Steel's work then you should be satisfied. The story is well connected, if not particularly well stylized, it is written in very generic form where everyone is gorgeous and the world is nearly perfect, even the 'bad' people in the story are perfectly bad. While the book doesn't send out any major messages to its readers, it is a fun intriguing read for the summertime.

And if you are wondering about the title Kaleidoscope, it refers to how with each turn of said toy, even though you have all the same pieces on the inside you see something completely different in the little window. Just like with each of the children in the story, while they all started out in the same living conditions, each of their lives took a different turn and produced different images...yet Steel is quick to point out they share certain mannerisms, hence the nature versus nurture question. ...
